Why thank you. Part of his fun is getting to use real life references in game as we are all from real life and part gallows humor. If he's going to die it will be with a smile on his face taking as many of them with him.

He got sick of Mahb alluding to the fact and outright stating it that he should be out killing these guys and finally had enough. It's time to plant as many of them as he can, if he survives, BONUS! That's where his conviction is coming from.

Neri is feeling like we're rapidly discovering that there are large gaps in the spheres left in the wake of our gods... and figures that that kind of justifies that idea by believing that the demons and gods used to be homies. Which makes them gods.

The knowledge that say... the sea tries to turn people crazy (when we know a lawful evil god used to control the sea) suggests that he may just be right. Hence him asking about volcanoes. And pointing out the anecdotal evidence that the church controls only false knowledge, not real knowledge in its books.

The world is seriously messed up, and our 'Demons' seem to be what's missing.

Alrighty, my WotR DM is at the point with her face to face group where Mass battles become a thing. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions to make them better via your experiences. She's kind of worried it's just going to be dice roll, consult table, repeat. Which sounds like a really boring session.

That's pretty much what it is. It's the DM and whoever is leading the army. If you know how to handle the battles they can be done quickly and then you can get back to the group adventures. Until you get to the city it's a quick mass battle then back to the small group. Even at the city we got the mass battles done quickly. What took the longest was planning the battles. Where do we go first, which direction do we approach from. It's quickest for the leader to know what he wants to do and then just do it. Some of those final battles the paladin army destroyed the demon army in one round. You could maybe suggest that the mass battles are handled during the week before through email or skype and then the DM could do a description of what happened. Otherwise it's one on one DM/Leader during the battles.

Sorry. That was me being inattentive, not Neri. My brain just completely deleted all relevant information not within five feet of Neri. Any chance we can make him seem a little less crazy by having not asked where the water is at the beach?

I basically didn't retain any of the middle portions, so I was still in 'forest gives way to farms.' I apologize.

Three times a year, I'm swarmed for a couple weeks. This is one of those times... so I'm frazzled. :p. Plus, we all know Neri shouldn't be doing the talking anyway.

Besides, she's actually come to the conclusion after that question that Lina is a nice person who's taking care of her simple relatives. So it actually helps. :)

@Mass Battles - What I usually do is split the party up, and put each of them in charge of a unit on the battlefield. Then they control the tactics of that unit.

Fight out the combat in their area. If it goes well, the main battle rolls get bonuses. If it goes badly, the main battle get's penalties. If it stalemates, the main battle rolls are unaffected.

I find this gives the PCs some feeling of control over the entire battle, but it also allows for them to 'win the battle and lose the war'. I find that using small unit combat works best (treat each group of soldiers as a 'swarm' that does damage and has hit points, and auto-hits). The PCs are individuals that auto-hit, but roll a 'average' dice of damage for them based on level.

Example, Fighter has 3 iterative attacks, each normally does 2d6+28. They get 4d6+49 (2d6+28 + 1d6+14 + 1d6+7) when they attack. Spellcasters roll area of effect damage on swarms normally, or do 1/4 damage with specific target spells (except for attacking a Hero, who takes full damage).

Can get very bloody very quickly for PCs (which given they are in the field of battle, is appropriate). Healing spells do 1/4 repair to a swarm unit, or full repair to a hero.
