I am totally okay with acquiring a third snake. >.>
Liisa Nemi Lampinen
@Shark - Yeah, pretty bad. It is fermented fish basically :P
@Lizard + fire = Char! char!?
Lina the Unbroken
I think we're talking a bit bigger than that...
Come to think of it, I don't remember whether my avatar portrait had one snake, or two. With the familiar and tattoo, I could have four snakes! Four! Ah ah ah!
Neri Voler
Lina the Unbroken
Also, I wonder if that raccoon will be able to pilfer things in combat? Because that would be neat.
Luna Rook
Yea she's completely ignored it and wanted it to go away
Johnny Slade
Char? I think Charmander/Charizard was one of my favorite original Pokemon.
Lina the Unbroken

Said EVERYONE EVER.

But it is true :P
Neri Voler
I like Mudkips.
Lina the Unbroken
Come on now, Hotaru. You don't like mudkips. You liek mudkips.
EDIT: Yeah, that post looks a lot funnier when I remember my avatar is Iomedae, scowling.
Neri Voler
I tried. But I couldn't misspell 'like'.
Honestly, I haven't -really- played since gold and silver.
I loved me some Tyranitar back then.
For RB: Blastoise, and never look back. :o I like turtles.
Lina the Unbroken
Yes, Tyranitar was amazing. The end.
...boy will mdt have some fun when he comes back tomorrow.
Neri Voler
Well, how else are we supposed to find out that he got a legit mew by doing the entire circuit?
Lina the Unbroken
Doing what circuit? I got a legit mew by hitting start at the right moment on Battle Road and then teleporting until a wild one appeared from my inventory. No sharking involved. Same as how I used all them dittos near Vermillion to catch a Clefairy that evolved into a Nidoking.
Neri Voler
Well, the legit way was earning all the badges in real life, then they'd trade you a mew. Or at least, that's how I understood it.
Lina the Unbroken
I thought that was an urban legend?
Neri Voler
Well, it may have been. I knew a guy who claimed to have done most of it (and that he'd played as Sabrina) in an inner city version before moving here. But... 'I knew a guy' is kinda how those things start :P
Lina the Unbroken
"Inner city version?" That doesn't sound like the pokemon I remember...
Posts for the Post God! Clutter for the Clutter Thread!
Neri Voler
:P Hey, with luck, it'll be MDT-sanctioned. I, as a DM, fully support players cluttering my thread with things they enjoy. People enjoying things together create bonds, which enhance shared experiences! :)

I actually preferred the Pika's and Pikachu's over the Chars and Charizards. At least for the cartoon. For the game, I preferred the Snorlax. Tons of HP, hit like a freight train. When he didn't snooze his turn away.
Johnny Slade
Random fact: "chuu" is the sound mice make in Japan.
Also, I find an awesome conversation to have with people fluent in other languages is finding out what sounds different animals make.
Lina the Unbroken
Snorlax was also the first good Pokemon Ash actually caught, IIRC
Luna Rook
Ash never caught Pikachu it was his starter since he was late and the others were already taken

The way sleep worked* in first gen, I'd say Butterfree was his first strong pokemon (and also, Butterfree is awesome!).
*You couldn't do anything once you woke up, so if you are faster you can basically keep people perma-lockdowned really easily with Sleep Powder

Cow (ko): Muuuuuuuuu!
Sheep (får): Bääääääääääää!
Horse (häst): Gnäääääääg!
Crow (kråka): Kraaaaa kraaaaaaaa!
Dog (hund): Voff voff!
Cat (kat): Mjauuuuu!
Owl (uggla): Hooh hooooh!
Lina the Unbroken
Yeah, but... Butterfree wasn't even close to the most effective user of that move; and he *caught* a Caterpie, totally unaware of what it would evolve into.
The only one I remember right now is that roosters in Hebrew say "Kukuriku"
Liisa Nemi Lampinen
Butterfree had/has a decent speed (outspeed only by Venomoth and Venosaur only of the other Sleep Powder users) so it is in the upper middle of the pack at least.
But true, he never caught Butterfree (quite the opposite ...).
Oh, and that reminds me:
Rooster (tupp): Kuckeliku!
Duck (Anka): Kvack!

Japanese uses Aho for crows.
'Aho Aho' 'Caw Caw'.
Aho also means 'Idiot' in Japanese. Which is why Bako (stupid characters) often have crows cawing 'Aho Aho' or 'Baka Baka' overhead when they say or do something especially stupid.
Baka can be translated as jerk, ass, idiot.
Neri Voler
Are those Vs pronounced like the V's in 'Violin' and 'Vampire'?
Liisa Nemi Lampinen
@V - Yeah, pretty much : )
@Aho - I shall archive the knowledge that Japanese crows caws 'idiot idiot'. Might come in handy for another character ... : )
Neri Voler
:P I was expecting, if Kong didn't turn his into a plushy, that the crow would have been calling out 'Ahou' a lot ;p
Also @Lessa: 'How else would you spell 'wee-oh-leen and wahm-peer'' :P
Lessah
Also @Lessa: 'How else would you spell 'wee-oh-leen and wahm-peer'' :P
Eh?
vaɪəˈlɪn and væm.paɪ.ə !
But it was hard to find the phonetic spellings of animal noises so I couldn't be 100% on a positive match :P
Edit: Or did you mean how do we say those?
Violin and vampyr - pretty similar since they are both loan-words from the same languages (ie both english and swedish borrowed from italian and german)
Edit2: Or did you mean how 'v' is usually a bit harder and 'w' is softer? (In english, like various vs why)
W isn't used much at all over here, only v. : )
Neri Voler
Neat. :)
Also, remembering Pokemon a bit better: My first time playing it, I caught a spearow. That thing was like level 80 by the time I reached the elite 4. I just used that poor bird as a sweeper. Silly JRPGs teaching me to just make one character BA and the rest will follow. :P
Liisa Nemi Lampinen
Yeah, I must admit that my first few runs of pokemon was basically 'one big guy and crush everything' too : P
But it works, so why not?=)
Neri Voler
I was informed like a year ago, that I should have been sporting Dodrio instead: Tri attack, Drill Peck, whatever-else. :P Slightly better stats than Fearow. I miss the simpler times when I didn't understand 'efficiency'. :(

Silly Hotaru. You're supposed to do this with your Charizard.
Also, Dodrio was insane. I seriously cleaned house with that guy in Gold, though when I got SoulSilver in college I retired it in favor of the mighty Staraptor.
Neri Voler
I have no idea what a Staraptor is. Is that like Skarmory but with less Sky Armor?
Lina the Unbroken
Staraptor (“Starling + Raptor”) is the 4th Gen Pidgeot-equivalent. It looks like a pointier Spearow, with far better stats and a far better movepool—in addition to hitting harder than a Dragonite’s Hyper Beam, it has a host of excellent fighting-type options for OHKOing switch-ins like Rhydon or Kabutops. Staraptor is one of my favorite sweepers I’ve used in competitive play—it’s not quite as terrifying as a Belly Drum Charizard or Swords Dance Cradily, but only because it’s far more expected.
Johnny Slade
For some reason I find that roosters tend to be the most interesting in different languages.
@Liisa: What sound do frogs make?
To my knowledge, other Japanese animals are
Cat: Nyaaa
Dog: Wan wan
Pig: Buu buu
Rooster: Kokekokko
Frog: Kero kero
Another interesting thing about Japanese is that they have some odd sounds. Like "niko niko" is the sound of someone smiling.
Lina the Unbroken
In Hylian, roosters go "Cucco"
Neri Voler
Lina the Unbroken
Horses can also 'whinny'!
Liisa Nemi Lampinen
@Frog - Hmm. 'Kvack' like the duck I think, but I can't recall many places where it is used that way. 'Grodan kväker' (where grodan is frog) which is similar to 'the dog is barking' is usually just used to describe frogs making noises.
@Staraptor - It also has a bad-ass 'haircut' :P
Neri Voler
Johnny Slade
Conclusion: Neri really likes raccoons. (Maybe Luna could transfer her companion to him? :-P)
Neri Voler
I can honestly say, I have never met anyone who has told me they disliked raccoons. I also have never asked. That is definitely going in my list of questions to ask on a date of any kind. :)
mdt
Just don't remove the rac when you ask about them. You could get slapped.
Some people don't take things into context, and without context...
For example, I got a strange look the other day from a physical therapist who looked at my cats and asked what kind they were.
"They're coons..."
*strange look*
"Maine Coons..."
"OH!"
*head shake by me*
Sometimes, I think we live in a world that is way way way too uber politically correct. Then there's days where I'm sure of it.
Neri Voler
Well, I live in Tennessee... and my face to face group had stories to tell about where they grew up (Jackson County). Apparently... it's the opposite of correct in any form. :) I wouldn't suggest moving there. :p
Personally, I'm on the dark humor side of things quite often, so once people know me quite well, I'm not particularly politically correct. Until then, I'm the picture of sanity. :3
