Could I buy masterwork weapon / amor in any village / town?

Rules Questions

Could I buy masterwork weapon/amor in any village/town? (if I have enough gold) , DM said masterwork could not be bought, you have to get it by looting, roll or forge. Is it true?

Short answer: Your DM has control over what items are or are not available in their game.

Long answer:

Typically masterwork weapons are available at any location that has items above 300 gp value for sale. Per the Core Rulebook, settlements have magic items below a specific value available for sale 75% of the time. It's silent on the availability of non-magical items, but can safely be assumed to be the same.

In this case, a town of thorpe (up to 20 people) or hamlet (21-60 people) size wouldn't have masterwork weapons for sale. Villages (61-200 people) have magic items up to 500 gp value, so should theoretically have masterwork weapons as well available.

If you're using Pathfinder Society rules, masterwork weapons and armor are always available, assuming you have the funds to purchase them.

If you have downtime, you can craft your own masterwork weapon with a DC 20 Craft check.

The Masterwork Transformation spell also lets you instantly turn a weapon into a masterwork version of itself.

the only limiting factors for items in towns and villages are magic items(which most dms i've played with allow most magic items to be bought in cities with towns having a luck roll based on the item you want to buy) everything else including master worked stuff can usually be bought everywhere except the smallest of towns

Can a Masterwork item be found for sale in a town/village? Based on the purchase cap, it's possible, but odds of that Masterwork item being what you want may be very small indeed, and in most cases will likely have to be commissioned, which means weeks/months of work by the local expert asked to perform the work(Smith/Jeweler/Scribe/Alchemist/Ect...).

Abstractly sure, but if the DM has a village setting with NPC's to interact with, then it's likely to require finding some one willing to change their workload to fulfill your request instead of their regular work, say 3 swords, 12 horse shoes, 4 crowbars, and a breastplate for their typical weeks work and instead work on a MW Bastard Sword for 7-12 weeks...

Yep, if we assume a 1st level Expert Human NPC Blacksmith with standard Skill NPC stats:

Craft (Weapons) = 1 Rank +3 Class + 2 Int = +6 modifier

If they invested their racial bonus into Intelligence that'd add another +1, and an extra +1 if they're middle-aged too. Assuming they're using masterwork tools to ply their trade, that'd add +2.

So if we min-max our 1st level Blacksmith, he's got a +10 on his crafting check. That's enough to Take 10 on his check to craft a Masterwork weapon.

If we assume he does so each week, it would take him nine weeks to craft a masterwork greatsword.

Our blacksmith's spent nine weeks making one weapon that nobody in his village is likely to buy. He could have pumped out 36 sickles each worth 6 gp in that time and instead had a chance at selling something.

Of course if some wealthy adventurer came and paid him for the weapon up front, he'd probably be willing to craft it for them.

Thanks, it is cleared now, DM control everything...

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

The way I run it is mundane (including masterwork) is always available, limited only in quantity. I treat any enhancements seperately, including special materials. This allows +1 armors, including mithral, in most places (75% chance, of course). If someone wants a better enchantment, then I look to max spellcasting, and tell them it'll take however many days, no guarantees.

In case it slipped past you, JDLPF mentioned Masterwork Transformation which is only a 2nd level spell for a wide variety of classes. Scrolls or Oils of this spell shouldn't be too difficult to find. Similarly it shouldn't be terribly difficult to find and hire a caster who is high enough level to cast 2nd level spells. That's assuming you don't have such a caster in your party.

Little known fact: the reason that the only copy of Blood Money is in a Runelord's hoard is because it was outlawed after crashing the Thassilonian economy.
