Fantastic Four reinventing Doctor Doom in the worse way possible
Soooo...Doom is now a computer hacker...who posts under the user name Doom. Presumably the whole despotic dictator angle has been shuttered...for a 4chan origin.
actual quote:
"Yeah, it was cool man. Josh [Trank], the whole deal, the lo-fi way he did it, the ultra-real. It was just nice to do that. It was nice to be feeling like we had to come to terms with what was given by this incident."
Because when I think "Fantasic Four" I think "ultra real"...

I dunno... May is a widow who manages to keep things together through frugality, an active social network, helps out in charities, falls in love with the Vulture and the Avengers' butler, has died at least a few times, who hates Spider Man, who lives in a deranged version of New York with walking insurance hazards... Not saying it is a good idea, just that with a good enough writer, it could be a good movie.

The problem is they keep trying to make Doom "realistic" in these movies ignoring the fact that what's so great about Doctor Doom is that he's so ridiculously over-the-top.
It can't be worst than the Doom from the Fantastic Four Animated Series which we (including my trans-man spouse) all describe as "Gay Doom".

Someone should introduce "Gay Doom" to Leader Desslok from the Star Blazers. Not only do they make a great evil couple that would be the fulfillment of Pat Buchanan's worst nightmares.

The only reason the Aunt May rumor took off is because Sony in generally really wants to milk the Spiderman franchise for everything it can, so the idea they would make a "Agent Carter" esq movie about her isn't that much a stretch.
While I did see the Aunt May thing before Doctor Doom, the Doctor Doom part was a bit more...what the hell.
At least if Fantastic Four bombs, maybe Fox will give it back to Marvel? Come on, you know you want to see Doom or Skrulls face off against the Avengers someday.

Maybe they can cut a deal and the new Aunt May can face off against the new Doom?

Poor Aunt May can't remember her log in or password and thus Doom's trolling on her knitting forum goes uncontested. Such is the power of DOOM!

As long as it's in her "Golden Oldie" incarnation.

The only thing I can imagine to make the new FF farce (oops, movie) worse would be to have Ben Grimm transform into Thing 1 from the Cat in the Hat. Then after Doom hacks the FF into submission and is about to win, Thing 2 appears to save the day.
Wouldn't that actually be an improvement on this?

My theory?
All of these changes are an attempt to force Marvel Studios/Disney to buy back the properties at an obscene rate.
Why would Disney buy them back? If this is the plan, they will just wait until Sony has pounded the property so far into the ground that it can't be profitable, and take it back when their license expires.
IIRC, Spiderman is one of the few really big franchises/proven money-earners that Sony has. I don't think they are INTENTIONALLY mismanaging it, I just don't think they have any clue what they are doing.
Sony has however been in talks with Marvel about sharing some properties. I think Sony would probably love to be an independent part of the MCU, it it means they could get a cut profits every time a spiderman characters shows up in a MCU movie.

I'm not sure that a company would want to see a property they're interested in devalued to such a degree.

Can hipsters watch Marvel movies? I'm just thinking aren't comic movies too popular right now for them? I mean I know one guy who refuses to watch Walking Dead because it is too popular...

Something to keep in mind is that Marvel actually has a clause in a lot of the film right contracts they have with other companies that gives them veto power if someone is intentionally producing a movie to torpedo it. So far they haven't really used it, and I think legally it might be a complicated process.
Sony has gone on record as saying they will never ever ever give back Spiderman, and the company has had some financial problems of late, and several potential big summer franchises "cough Last Airbender cough" utterly tanked. Selling off Spiderman for a short term payout would probably cause the stockholders/board to utterly revolt, and potentially be the straw that breaks Sony Film's back.
So yeah...I don't think Sony is purposely trying to hurt spiderman, I just think they are trying to emulate the MCU and develop a shared universe around what is effectively one major character. Fox and Warner Brothers are also trying to create a shared movie universe, but they have the advantage of actually controlling enough characters that they can actually do so without resorting to "Aunt May: The Movie"

Doom is a megalomaniac and a despot. He's a genius, obsessed, and completely assured of his superiority to Richards (so he says...) and everyone else on the planet. I've already seen the role reduced in one FF movie. I'd rather they tried to stay true to the source for one of my favorite Marvel villains rather than trying to make him hip, edgy, or "realistic."

Most Hacktivists are very smart, obsessed, and completely assured of their superiority over the rest of the human race... so all it removes is the megalomaniac despot. Is that bad? I never believed/liked the despot part of his character.
Well, unless he's hacked himself the GNP of a small country, he won't have the funds necessary to do what Doom does--invent things that provide him with more power. He's going to need something other than great computer skills to deal with a guy who can burst into flames, a woman who can create force fields, a superhumanly strong rock man, and the super-stretchy scientist who gives them cool techno toys on top of their powers.
