Kineticist going NOVA building up charge over several rounds

So I get the feeling that the general consensus is that the Kineticist is nice but is just lacking a little something to really make them pop. In particular I see DR being brought up over and over.

So I landed on this little idea.

Kineticist as written but....

The can hold and build up their blasts.

So at 1st level a 1d6+1 blast held for 1 round and released on the second round does 2d6+2, held for 2 released on 3rd 3d6+3. Holding also increases the attack roll for each round held making bigger blasts more likely to hit.

technically the total damage per round doesn't change but the stacked up charge should be able to mow through things like resistance and DR or perhaps a stone wall for an escape route.

of course your vulnerable while charging up and charging up might not always be the best option but it offers something a little different and a little more versatile.

So if you want to pump it up, you can...but it will hurt. I dropped the attack bonus...as much as I like the idea I feel it makes the power a bit too good. I also increased the burn for composite blasts as they would receive twice the benefit. Note that this would also provide a way to increase the DC of saving throws when using certain forms such as spray and explosion.


Man. Ya'kno what? I would utterl ylove this.

You would want to put a limit on it.. Maybe limit it to the amount of burn you have, or limitted by the amount of burn you can use in one round. So it kinda scales with level instead of a lv 1 guy holding it for 20 days and nuking cthulu.

I would keep it as a standard action to charge so you can pull some anime crap dodging, moving and running until you can unleash your blast. I'm can see requiring a burn cost.. not sure how to pul lit off. One burn a round is pretty harsh. .I suppose in theory you could use a move action to reduce the chargin cost.

It would make a great sniper shot though. I would love to do this with TK Blast and say an anvil


This feels very Dragon Ball Z kamehameha to me, I love it. Where they spend 6 episodes gathering energy from everything around them to just nuke whoever they are fighting that story arc..

But really, this could be useful.

I'm already making a DBZ aetherist haha. So something like this, would be awesome. Especially if you could use it with composite blasts. I would so spend the burn and turns to turn my force composite blast into a kamehameha. or Special beam cannon

The only issue I see with an ability like this is that a lot of combats are over within a couple rounds. It might could be useful in a big, tough fight like a boss-battle, but a lot of the time you probably would be better off just throwing your normal blasts instead of charging up.

Still, it is a cool concept. It might could get tweaked a bit though. I don't know.

Another issue is..
"we're gonna ambush those guys here. I'm gonna start charging my laswer!" *combat starts* *whole area is engulfed in death and doom*

I think limiting rounds to your Feel the Burn bonus might be worth while.. so yo ucan only charge roughly one extra round per 3-4 levels. Would mitigate some of the issues
