Connected to Earth?

I was hoping somebody better read up on Golarion than I am could explain to me the connection between the two. Baba Yaga came from earth if what I've read is correct, and I've seen someone say the Osirian gods migrated from Golarion to Earth, so my question is how? How is this happening, why is this happening, is it written down in some book I don't have? Any info would be appreciated.

Earth is a different planet in the same universe/plane of existence as Golarion. The things you list use magic to cross the distance between the two.

And it's happening basically because it's cool.

That's...pretty much it, really.

Okay, so this is basically a starjammer connection.

More a conventional sci-fi "Golarion is an alien planet in an alien solar system." connection, only with magic, too. IMO, anyway.

Short answer: there's no overarching reason for the Earth/Golarion connection.

Long answer:

How did the Ancient Osirian/Egyptian gods migrate from Golarion to Earth? Simple: they didn't. It's just that, when Osirian was under foreign rule from the Empire of Kelesh, the Keleshites did their best to shut down Osirian's native religion. Thus, most Osirian people converted to Golarion gods like Abadar, Nethys, and Pharasma, and ceased their worship of Anubis, Osiris, and Horus. However, the Ancient Osirian gods can still grant spells to Golarion worshipers, so they haven't left per se. They're just no longer in vogue.

If you're familiar with the work of HP Lovecraft, many of his uniquely Earth-based creations also have a place on Golarion. Off the top of my head, this includes the yithian race (from Earth [sort of]), the Great Old One Cthulhu (trapped in eternal death-sleep on Earth), and several books.

How and why is this happening? There's no real answer to that because the question is vast in scope. You have to look at the individual pieces to make sense of it. Why is Cthulhu worshiped on Golarion? Because his dreams are so powerful that they affect cultists throughout the universe (aka, the Material Plane). Why did Baba Yaga decide to leave Earth? That's covered in detail in the Reign of Winter AP, but it was basically because she needed to expand her horizons. Literally.

Whenever I have seen an Earth/Golarion connection, it has been a rare and unique occurrence. The powers-that-be at Paizo have wisely kept interaction between the two planets to a bare minimum, and I hope they continue to do so.

According to Pathfinder lore, Golarion and Earth inhabit the same multiverse: the coexistence of gods on Earth and Golarion is just a consequence of deities existing across that multiverse.

As far as the question of creatures that show up in both places, travel between the two planets is possible -- it just requires very powerful magic (or at least the ability to travel for unthinkable distances across the void of space), which is why connections between the two are so rare. (One such connection occurs in Pathfinder #71: Rasputin Must Die! -- information about Baba Yaga comes from this AP.)

It's possible that Earth and Golarion both exist on the Material Plane, albeit in different solar systems, in which case travel between them might be possible with interplanetary teleport -- assuming you knew where you wanted to go, at least. Which is a 9th-level spell in itself, so it's not easy under the best of circumstances. But I don't think it's been conclusively confirmed that this is the case; it's possible that they're not only in different solar systems, but different planes as well...in which case you'd need magic even beyond the spells currently available, magic that's so far only present in artifacts like Baba Yaga's Dancing Hut, or known by Baba Yaga herself.

Wouldn't Plane Shift work?

It's confirmed - Earth and Golarion are in the same Material Plane/universe, but different solar systems. There's only one Material Plane.

No, because as said, Earth and Golarion inhabit the same plane. Plane shift can move you between the Material Plane and Inner/Outer Planes, but not inside the Material Plane itself. As Aetherwisp said, for that you need the 9th-level spell interplanetary teleport.

Earth and Golarion could be in different galaxies. Time assuming that travel between Golarion and Earth is not FTL in a certain AP and is portal/wormhole based the current year in Golorian is aprox 100 years in earths past.

Unless you plane shift to the Ethereal, then choose Earth as your destination when you plane shift back to the Material......

Believe it or not, they already thought of that.

From Distant Worlds (page 3, under the header "The Planes"):

"In theory, a magic-user should be able to shift to a plane like Axis from one planet, only to hop back to the Material Plane and arrive on a different planet, thus neatly avoiding the need for space travel. In practice, however, magic doesn’t usually work this way—without a direct focus related to the point at which the spellcaster wishes to arrive, he’s liable to return to the planet he knows best."

It goes on to say that spellcasters are far more likely to end up plane shifting into the empty void of space than landing on a planet, without careful prep work.

This is workable in theory, but you'd need to know Earth exists and supports life and want to go there. Which would all be pretty tricky to find out.

EDIT: Ninja'd! With better information.

Interesting to know.....

Still, it leaves it open as a possibility.....

In addition to the previous two Earth nods, St. Cuthbert's Mace is said to have come from Earth as well. Well, technically, it came from a "far-flung, magic-starved world," but the only other place it could have come from was Oerth, which only meets the first of those two qualities.

It's from Earth. It belonged to this guy. (Or, at least, the version of Earth that was visited by Baba Yaga's hut in 1918 and where Rasputin had bona-fide magical powers.)

The fact St. Cuthbert was a real person is why Paizo was able to bring the name back to that artifact, instead of just the saint's mace as it appeared in the 3.5 SRD.

Which seems to also be the version of Earth where R'lyeh is.

Rasputin, Baba Yaga, and Lovecraftian madness? Must be Hellboy's Earth.

Keep in mind...you'd need to know of earth's existence in character :)

I used to go and read in his tomb at university. Not many visitors and it was, ahem, deathly quiet.

Bingo. It's "Earth," not Earth. Pretty big difference actually...

I always toyed with the idea of having a Pathfinder character hail from Earth, understanding that overplaying that aspect leads to a stale character very quickly. One of them was a scion of Nikola Tesla, who, officially, didn't have any children. Unofficially, one of them is an alchemist wandering a distant, fantastical planet...

Also, it is a bit interesting regarding humanity's existence in the Pathfinder universe. They're on Earth, they're on Golarion, they're on whatever planet the Numerian starship came from. Be even more interesting if, of all the worlds in the Material Plane, humans are found ONLY on those three worlds.

CONSPIRACIES AHOY!

Unless you count Atomic Robo Tesla.

Okay, now I kind of want to have Hellboy and Atomic Robo both come stomping through Pathfinder.
