Forget Androids, how about Mutants?

Iron Gods

Rereading some Numeria stuff today, and this line in the Inner Sea World Guide stuck out to me:

"... bathing the landscape in unknown energies that continue to cause weird mutations to this day."

I somehow missed that before, and had always assumed that the only sorts of "radioactive mutants" on Golarion were those in the magically-tainted Mana Wastes.

Any chance we'll see some more on radioactive Numerian mutants in Iron Gods? Pweeease?

(And some radioactive plague zombies, while we're at it.)

The chance of seeing radioactive Numerian mutants in Iron Gods is...

Spoiler:
... 100%. How could it be otherwise?

Huzzah! \( ゚◡゚)/

Yeah, radioactive mutants as well mana waste mutants.

We will be much pleased to see where these mutants go. Maybe not the one guy at the end of Robocop before he became a smear, but hopefully something fun to fight or play as.

As long as we don't get butchered by an army of not-Deathclaws, I'm up for anything. Also, playable mutants? That would be sweet! Plus, they could be customized just like Tieflings. Think of the glorious possibilities!

"Army of not-Deathclaws" in Numerian context made me think of army of laser-firing cyborgized raptors...

Drejk,
I could finally use my Kellid ranger, named Turok Dinosaur Hunter?

Just get yourself a Musket Master sniper Cohort with a red beret to deal with them.

Oh Lord, lets just add the Daleks, Cybermen, The Vaults, Chaingun wielding mutants, and lets see, some mutated troglodytes that walk around destroying cities with their radioactive fire breathing.

Please take it somewhere no one expects with the mutants. We have had plague zombies and other things like it. Maybe Cyborgs, and underground mutant horrors?

Just remember - most mutations are NOT beneficial. This isn't the basis of evolution, it's messing around with DNA. Paizo are going to have to come up with a really really good reason why a mutated human suddenly gets better at something, rather than totally fubared.

And no, I don't mean better at something/worse at something else I mean better at anything - most mutations are small, cosmetic changes (if you're lucky) or massive cell degenerating, physically crippling changes that don't even look cool.

But that's RL - in Golarion I'm sure they've worked it out.

It seems likely the inspiration for mutants in Numeria has more to do with drive-in era movies than science :)

Sure, real-world mutations are usually not beneficial. They're also not fun in a game, nor do they really fit in well with the pulp inspirations and themes of Golarion and Numeria in particular.

Our mutants WILL be of the type that are more like what you see in sci-fi movies, games like Fallout, stories like the Dark Tower series, and so on. They may have disadvantageous mutations, but for the most part, the mutant template will bolster creatures and increase their CR. Because that's more interesting in a game about fighting monsters.

As the progenitor of this thread, and its subsequent non-PC misnomer, I would just like to clarify that the mutated prefer to be known as Genetically Challenged, or GCs.

(Which, I'm sure not coincidentally, happen to be the initials of Guido Carosella.)

Yeah now we can have mutant turtles but seriously I can't wait to see this template.

Is there a way to make a mutant a Playable race?

Maybe treat mutant template as effective character level +1, meaning that level 1 character starts with 3k xp and level two is on 6k xp ?

Instead of boosting the character level, you could alternatively make the deformity more disadvantageous, to even things out a bit.

After reviewing the template (Bestiary 5, pp 180-181), I was thinking - should one of my players want the option - of doing a custom race creation based on one of the core races.

In my opinion, the big problem with the template is the stat bonuses. (and some of the beneficial mutations are WAY more powerful then others.)

I would need to cherry pick and then create a table for the PC to role on.

Skorched Urf' Studios have Accident of Birth that covers mutation and difformities.

I don't own it so I'm not sure how much of a help it can be too you, but i's an option if you don't mind 3PP
