Advanced Class Guide Playest (PFS City of Strangers, Part 1 lvl 5)

Recruitment

1 to 50 of 84 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

What
I will be running the PFS scenario, City of strangers, Part 1: The Shadow Gambit, as a way of play testing the new Advanced Class Guide classes. I will be running a DMPC, and am looking for 4 other players. We’ll be playing through the scenario at tier 6-7. I will not be reporting this scenario for credit, nor do you need an official PFS character to play

Me
I am an avid PBPer and am currently running four other games on the boards, and playing in several more:

The 5th Mendevian Crusade

Carrion Crown

Aspis Rising

Council of Thieves

I am a pretty busy guy at the moment, so this game is a bit of a stretch for me. I might only have time to update once or twice a week. I will attempt to do things faster than that, but I’m not making any guarantees.

I will be using maps for combat, and running with some house rules that I’ve developed to make the PBP experience go more smoothly, I will explain them after we start but mainly they involve running combat in initiative blocks and giving players access to some of the monster’s stats so they can resolve their own actions in one post and not need to wait on me or others.

You
You are familiar with Golarion and specifically the Pathfinder Society organization (in the game world, not talking about real world PFS, though that wouldn’t hurt). You have downloaded the Advanced Class Guide playtest document and want to give one of them a go. You can post at least three times a week, and are capable of writing in 3rd person narrative without egregious grammar or spelling mistakes. You understand that long disappearances without notice first will likely get your character killed off and removed from the game.

Your Character
Crunch
Level: 5
Class: One of the advanced playtest classes. Multiclassing with normal classes is okay, as long as 3/5 levels are in a single ACG class and you follow the rules in the guide for multiclassing.
Races: Core + Featured
Alignment: Don’t care, play well with others (no PVP).
Ability Scores: 20 point buy (nothing lower than 8 to start)
HP: Max at first level and then ½ HD+1+con mod after that. Companions get ½ HD+1+Con for all HD (including first).
Traits: 2, any non AP Paizo published
Feats: No crafting non consumables (wands, potions, scrolls only).
Starting Wealth: 10,500 GP (nor more than 4,000 GP on a single item)

Make an alias using this format. Just copy it and then paste it into your profile, and fill it out. Here’s Sampson as an example.

Fluff

  • Your character should be a member of the Pathfinder Society in good standing with one of its factions.
  • Give me a concise background that covers the following information.
-Your homeland and who your parents were
    -A major childhood event
-A major event in adolescence and how you got your training
-How you joined the Pathfinders, how you joined your faction
-Your character’s hardest mission to date, and how they handled it
  • A description of your character's appearance, bonus points for pictures
  • Give me a writing sample, five minutes from your character’s life in 3rd person, past tense narrative.

Your writing sample and background are to show me you don’t suck at writing, and will be the largest part of what I consider when choosing people.

    ========================================================================

City of strangers, Part 1: The Shadow Gambit

It’s been nearly a month since Venture Captain Drandle Dreng, a decrepit yet well-respected Pathfinder, instructed you to meet him dockside in Absalom. On arrival, Dreng herded you on to a Korvosa-bound merchant vessel and gave you a series of quick, stern instructions.

“One of my good friends, a merchant in the Varisian outcast’s haven known as Kaer Maga, sent me a very strange letter, which I need you to investigate. The merchant—his name is Horis Collgardie—tells me that the residents of Kaer Maga are very upset about the Society’s plan to build a lodge in their city and even further upset that the agents we sent are making trouble, stirring up the delicate balance of power that exists in the so-called City of Strangers. The trouble is, not the Decemvirate or any venture-captain I can find gave the okay to build a lodge there. We know it would be folly to do so—at least right now—and so this idea that Collgardie has that the Society is there and doing just that is worrisome. In a few weeks’ time, you’ll be in Korvosa. From there, book passage on a river ship for Harse, then travel overland to the road’s end at the cliffs below Kaer Maga—the so-called Twisted Door. There you must pay the Duskwardens to escort you through the Halflight Path to reach Kaer Maga. Once inside the city, find Collgardie and find out what he’s talking about. If there are Pathfinders in the city founding a lodge, tell them I order them to stop at once. If this is some kind of ruse, get to the bottom of it and do what you can to keep our Society’s good name in Kaer Maga—we may not be completely welcome there, but neither are we unwelcome. Let’s keep it that way. Any questions?”

    ========================================================================

Recruitment will stay open until I get four players whose characters are complete according to the above criteria, and that I find interesting. I’ll try to provide feedback to let you know if I find your concept interesting to avoid wasting your time. Please refrain from RPing in this thread. If you have any questions, please ask.

  • Oh man, I am soo bummed to be away from home with no computer. Sucks trying to make a char on a phone.

I've been wanting to get back into one of your games ever since life meant I Had to drop from the Mendevan Crusade game.

    Crap.

I've decided to play a human Shoanti exile barbarian 1/slayer 4 from the Sklar-quah. Just so you know who you'll potentially be joining.

If we start off as an arcanist from the existing playtest PDF would we be converting to whatever is released when they revise it like Jason was talking about?

I don't know what you're referring to, but if they release updates while we are still playing then we will apply them.

    DM Jelani wrote:

This. According to Jason, the Arcanist is getting a pretty large overhaul.

Well, like I said we'll start with what we've got and then update as they do.

I'm putting together a submission. Namely, the Honorable Master Fang Jianyin, Ru-Shi investigator. If this goes well would you consider running another one at a higher level? I;m unexpectedly getting attached to this character concept.

Do you mind if I format the Character Like this

Or Magic Cold Iron Weapons (4000gp + 2*(base weapon price))

    Working on Half-Elf Bloodrager backstory.
And equipment as soon as I get an answer on the above questions.

And What fractions list is to be used
the one from here or here

Yes. If you want to keep a separate sheet somewhere that's in a format you find convenient, fine. But I won't consider submissions that don't follow instructions. I need to be able to know exactly where to look to find the stat I need, right away, without wasting my time. Thus the standard stat block format.

I suppose I can allow a mithral breastplate, since it's so close to what I said. Other things, nah.

Since the scenario is an older one, it only has missions for the five original factions (Andoran, Cheliax, Taldor, Osirian, Qadira). However, if you would like your character to be associated with one of the other factions, that's fine. You just won't have a faction mission.

DM Jelani stuff is top notch. I have read all his Carrion Crown adventure so far. His team of players on this adventure is, to say the least, excellent.

Don't know if I would have the time to join, but i'll consider this thoughfully.

    Thanks for the endorsement (^_^)

    My pleasure...
I will check on your other Pbf.

I updated the format to something of a Hybrid of your format and my format and is found Here
    Is it close enough?

if you don't like spoilers say so

I don't like spoilers except for fluff. I'm not going to pick you if you don't use the provided format. It's already there for you, all you have to do is push ctrl+c and then ctrl+v.

Considering a hunter... hopefully I'll be selected. Will get things up later today, or tomorrow.

I've decided to submit a gnome swashbuckler, tomorrow at the latest.

This is DeathQuaker, with a submitted hunter (sorry Aeshuura, I started building the character before I saw your post--and this process, with having to provide the background and all, takes awhile, so I don't feel inclined to start over. Hopefully there's room for a couple different submissions).

This is an old alias I hadn't used in years (which is why it has prior posts) but the background, build, etc. are new (of course the build has to be :) ). Everything should be done except I have not yet calculated carrying capacity/weight (and may need to adjust gear if she's overburdened). I will update asap with the final calculations on weight but wanted to upload this while I had a moment.

I added areas on the sheet for spellcasting and animal companion, as I otherwise felt the "special abilities" area was too cluttered and I don't feel those really quite fall under special abilities. If this counts as me messing unnecessarily with the template and I lose points, so be it--I respect that the GM needs to clearly read the sheet, but so do I.

QUESTION: as a 5th level character with an animal companion, I would think I had taken some downtime to train my animal companion with some tricks beyond the bonus tricks provided. Is it allowable for me to assume I have done this? How many tricks can I assume to have trained?

I post regularly, as you can see from my campaigns tab, and you are welcome to read through my current campaigns to see what my posting style is currently like.

    Dotting. I'll throw something together.

Adding segments for spells and stuff like that is fine, I do the same thing on my characters who cast spells. At first glance your sheet looks totally fine format wise. Perfect in fact.

I'll give a good looking over as I have time and get back to you.

    Cool, thanks very much!

I looked her over, pretty solid submission. I'm not going to make any final decisions just yet, but I like her. Please stand by :)

Building up a Warpriest for submission. I'd love to do Arcanist, but am waiting for them to crank out the big revision; I don't feel like making a character then re-making them two days later. If this thread is still active when that happens I may throw one up.

Downloaded the Guide today, just to see if something pick my fancy so I could try to join your group

I'm putting together a shaman. Should I build it with the cleric spell list or the druid spell list? They've mentioned changing which it taps into.

Current guide rules please. Any changes won't occur until they release an official errata or a new version of the playtest.

You're missing your spells, also the fluff could use more details. You don't even name the little girl who was apparently a huge part of his childhood. Other than that, it looks okay.

    Thanks!

I've calculated her equipment weight and as I did indeed find her encumbered, I adjusted her gear a bit (got rid of some stuff and got her an efficient quiver to keep her arrows in).

    Updated format, and completed background.

Note this alias was used before in games that died from GMs who went missing.

Background is still a work in progress, but mostly finished. The character sheet is good except for the gear -- still working on that. If there are any problems, please let me know. Thanks for the consideration.

    ===================================================

    Background:
    Brithplace: Finderplain Nationality: Katapeshi
    Parents: Galungbalom and Frazi

Childhood incident: While in Absalom, Zarboluket entered a festival’s dancing competition at the age six. The applause as he spun, twirled, and pirouetted invigorated him as his strength began to fade. Round after round, the thrill he felt coursing through him from the graceful and fluid movements of his body and the joy accepting the accolades of the audience propelled him to more daring maneuvers. He ultimately lost in the final round of competition, but he didn’t complain. He had danced like he never had before. This fueled his desire to learn as many different dances from the world’s cultures as he could.

Adolescent incident: With his parents, he returned to Finderplain to see his birthplace. One day while exploring the marketplace, he saw a gnome sprawled in the shade of a tree, drooling in the dust, exhibiting the late signs of the Bleaching. Other gnomes either steered clear of the gnome or ignored him. Zarboluket approached, slowly, a tad fearful. He knew he couldn’t catch the Bleaching, yet...he’d never seen a gnome this close up with such an advanced case. Sitting next to the gnome, he watched over him, protecting him from any trouble. The gnome’s groans and whimpers sent uneasy shivers up his spine. Shadows lengthened across the marketplace before the gnome woke. The flatness of the gnome’s voice as he thanked Zarboluket shocked him. Zarboluket attempted to cheer him up by dancing, performing all the dances he knew. Poshment thanked him again. Day after day, Zarboluket watched over Poshment in the marketplace. After a fortnight, Poshment’s Bleaching halted and his voice sounded richer. He asked Zarboluket if he wanted to learn the art of fencing. Zarboluket agreed, partly because he did want to learn, but also partly because he thought it would help arrest the Bleaching.

Training: Poshment gave Zarboluket a full education in weapons and armor and how to use his flair for dance and acrobatics as well as his wit and cunning in combat. Poshment travelled with the family as they roamed around the eastern part of the Inner Sea; especially Taldor.

Joining Pathfinder Society: Ever since Zarboluket was a child he had written to Pathfinders from first published adventurers to venture-captains asking for their advice in finding his own adventures. One new Pathfinder in particular struck up a correspondence with him. After he had left his home, and finished his education with Poshment, Zarboluket wandered northern Katapeshi researching different dances between the Badawi and the Garundi. After a fierce sandstorm rearranged the dunes, Zarboluket found the remnants of a mortarless brick house, which contained pots filled with papyri; ancient Osirian manuscripts, one of which was for refining pesh! He wrote to his main Pathfinder friend, a member of the Taldor faction. By now his friend was a venture-captain. He invited Zarboluket to join the Pathfinder Society, specifically the Taldor lodge. Zarboluket agreed. He liked the faction’s methods of playing groups against groups. It reminded him of a prank and also orchestrating a complex dance.

Most difficult Pathfinder mission: Infiltrating Cheliax within a performance troupe to help a slave escape was his most difficult mission. They performed during a week-long festival. After the final performance at the manor, Zarboluket magically disguised himself as the halfling they were liberating. Zarboluket switched positions with the halfling as the troupe was packing up their stage decorations and props. Once the halfling was away, Zarboluket’s task was to impersonate the halfling so that when Zarboluket escaped, the disappearance of the slave wouldn’t be linked to the troupe. For three weeks, the gnome did his best. His muscles ached every day and he had to make excuses about why he was weaker than normal. He was beaten. Not once could he relax. His escape didn’t go unnoticed. One of the halflings alerted the overseer. Armed with a stolen butter knife, Zarboluket fought a small pack of dogs to win his freedom.

Five minutes in his day: Coming soon.

    Personality:
He likes to laugh. He gets mad when strangers make fun of his below average strength. He’ll get annoyed if friends make fun of him, but as long as it isn’t too drawn out, he doesn’t let it escalate to anger.

    Description:

    Ht: 3’ 6”
    Wt:  41 lbs
    Age: 53
    Hair: Copper
    Eyes: Purple
    Skin: Dark mead

Amethyst colored armor, gemstone rings on his fingers, hummingbird feathers sewn into a maze-like sigil on the back of his jacket. He doesn’t like necklaces so will rarely wear that.

Around his thirtieth birthday, Zarboluket’s uncle Droshtor was crushed to death by a giant. His gnome hooked hammer was snapped in half as well. Zarboluket acquired the family heirloom weapon and had the pick end reworked into a heavy pick. He trained and fought with this weapon for years.

He liked the faction’s methods of playing groups against other groups.

Not once could he relax fearful of his ruse being discovered. Finally, when it was time to escape, a halfling betrayed him to the overseer. Armed with a stolen butter knife, Zarboluket fought a small pack of dogs as he escaped the manor. He had cached his weapons and armor just over the property line. Still in the halfling disguise, by the time the overseer and two guards caught him he was fully prepared for them. He cut their hamstrings and rode off on a conjured horse.

Five minutes in his day: In an alley of Absalom, Zarboluket flipped his sword in the air and caught it. The midday sun glinted off the mithral. Pointing the tip at his adversary, he laughed. ”I could be ‘a pesh mind’ right now and still defeat you! You call that balanced? Look at your feet! If I held the sword like that my master would return from the Bleaching. Tell your friend he needs to stop clomping around behind me if he’s trying to be sneaky.” He steps to the side to look over his shoulder. We’re at a figurative crossroads. You can take one branch and attack me. I know, and you probably do too, that I’ll win. You’ll get a few cuts, a scar, but you’ll live. Another branch involves you running as fast as you can away from here. A third branch...we could go to a tavern and you can tell me why you’re accosting a gnome in such an unfriendly manner. I won’t buy you drinks, but you won’t pay for mine either. So what do you say? I’ll step over here and let you two deliberate your options.” Sword ready to strike, Zaroluket approached the first man and slipped by him. The two men whispered together for about ten seconds then ran off.

Zarboluket sighed. ”If I hear you’re picking on gnomes I’ll pick on you!” he yells after them, pulling his pick from his side and brandishing it at the departing men. ”If you change your mind, you can find me at the Gnarled Gnome’s Gnawing Gnats.”

    Personality:
He likes to laugh. He gets mad when strangers make fun of his below average strength. He’ll get annoyed if friends make fun of him, but as long as it isn’t too drawn out, he doesn’t let it escalate to anger. He doesn’t often ask, “What’s in it for me?” in terms of money. Adventure, humor, and swordplay are usually more than enough. He flirts with female gnomes and finds taller species fairly repulsive.

Busy part of the week for me Wednesday-Saturday morning. I won't have time to do much with this until the weekend.

Okay I finally have some time to give this thread a little attention.

I've received four submissions, of those two Iriel and Zarboluket appeal to me.

Kellan is mechanically solid, but fluff-wise lacking in detail and rather generic feeling.

Valeria didn't follow instructions (no writing sample, no mention of who her mother was, wrong format, no hardest pathfinder mission etc). That combined with the hyper unrealistic, porno-esque render makes her a no-go for me.

    Approved Characters So Far

    Iriel Lasslanta - F Elf Hunter 5

Zarboluket (please make an alias before we start playing) - M Gnome Swashbuckler 5

    Chidubem Orc-Lover (my DM PC) - M Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 1/Slayer 4

That means, I still have spots for two more players. I will be leaving recruitment open until I get them! PLEASE APPLY!
