Laser pointers and monsters

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Either a magic pointer or a small polished mirror, what monsters are dumb/twitchy/distractible enough to fall for it?

Anything feline. They love it.

Well if you're going for the obvious lol...

Grand Lodge

Goblins.

Vampires, particularly if the laser pointer is a solar-pumped one.

Anything canine falls for it, too, if my dogs are any indication.

Laser Pointers: the new way to protect yourself from Werewolves.

Animal-level intelligence creatures that are non-apex predators or are herbivores. Creatures of somewhat lower intelligence who are primarily nocturnal or live in darkness (like an Int 5-6 gnome).

Make a judgment call if you're the DM. If you're the player, roll with it and see what happens.

I'd call it a Feint with modifiers depending on how easily distracted the opponent is and how 'shiny' the distracting object is. I assume goblins, felines, and munchkins would take massive penalties, and rules lawyers would call BS on the whole thing, pouting all the way.

This is for me as a GM. No rules lawyers in the group. What about Gremlins?

Silver Crusade

Hound archons.

blink dogs.

Dragons are often considered feline in behavior... many times have I had someone in my party say "Nice Kitty" to the dragon we just encountered.

Oooooh... imagine meeting a massive, Colossal great wyrm gold dragon, and having it run bonkers over trying to catch the little red dot!

Also, beholders have been known to grow utterly berserk about it. Something about different eye rays with "degenerate sub-beholder mutant freaks" or something similar.

You might need to use a spotlight to create a big enough dot, but the tarrasque seems dumb enough to go for it.

Shadow Lodge

If you try to use it on the party's Catfolk rogue, she's equally likely to have hours of fun or call you a racist.

Cats chasing pointers is a triggered prey instinct. I would say any animal that works off similar instinct. It is has far less to do with being "dumb/twitchy/distractible". The creatures in at category will be better suited for tricks like a gold coin on a fishing line and dragging it into a trap.
