Well, how about an ARABIC anime? Something designed by a guy who apparently loves the stuff and wanted to make his own (there's also no fanservice):

But why robots? Oh dear God, why is it always robots?

No fanservice? No freehold.

Silver Crusade

Has anyone here watched any of the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Parallel Works videos?

I caught the first one yesterday and thought it was pretty cool. For those who don't know, Parallel Works are a series of 15 anime videos done by Gainax using the characters of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and a song from the soundtrack, placing them in alternate settings and/or stories. Here's the first: TTGL: PW1.

Grand Lodge

I think I checked out a few of them.

Silver Crusade

I also caught another video yesterday... it was done by the creator of Evangelion. I hesitate to share the link because it's NSFW. Freehold will definitely appreciate the fanservice... I think. I'll place it under a spoiler.

Spoiler:

Let the trippiness begin.... The first 90 seconds can be skipped.

How does this compare to Sword Art Online?

I'm a fan of both Sword Art Online and Log Horizon and have been watching the new seasons on Crunchyroll. I like them both about equally with Sword Art Online having the edge in animation and Log Horizon in overall story.

I would say that Sword Art Online is about the players vs. the game while Log Horizon is about the players learning to live within the game, especially in having to forge relationships/ties with NPCs.

Also, for me- Sword Art Online started out with its strongest story arc (in Aincrad) while Log Horizon season 1 got better and better with a dip at the end. Season 2 felt a little slow to start but it's getting better (last week's episode was fantastic!).

There are a few other differences as well, thematically.

SAO is very much an action series using the "Trapped in an MMO" setup as a backdrop. LH on the other hand takes the MMO part as it's primary defining trait. Where Kirito is the clear hero of the story and primarily fights solo, Shiroe is an Enchanter, a Buffer class who depends on his other party members to bring the pain while he makes the plans and powers them up. He needs the Tank to take the hits, the DPS to dish them out, and the Healer to keep everybody alive.

Consequentially, LH is more of an ensemble show, where he challenges aren't always things that can be hit with a sword or spell until they de-rezz. In the first season, he's death with problems like how to get real-tasting food, unscrupulous guilds enslaving low-level players, NPCs being actual people now, and what happens when a quest is not taken in a timely manner(turns out, monsters don't always wait for you to come kill them)?

It also plays a lot with the "game" aspects. For example, one character featured in a sidestory manga was a gold-farming bot before the change, and is now a sapient being, and another character that will be showing up is Shiroe's female alt account.

Dude, a lot of places I know consider that NSFW. If you're in a workplace where that's not, then cool.

you didn't link the Me!Me!Me! video, you linked the first of the GL paralle works.

I've seen Me!Me!Me! and it is very NSFW. Very trippy and once you start figuring out the back story to it fairly interesting, but DAMN than is a hell of a thing.

knights of sidonia is done with me. Finished knights of sidonia. It winked at me afterwards, told me to clean myself up, and lit a cigarette before leaving.

The series went from firm Sci fi to a rather rotj ending that I still enjoyed. Loved all the characters and truly enjoy the transgender/gender neutral character. Can't wait for season 2.

Me! Me! Me! is trippy... but yeah, I think I get it.

Arpeggio of blue steel is a nice cheeaecakey ship girl series after knights of sidonia.

It does, however, diverge greatly from the manga. I enjoyed it all the same, but be warned.

I take it the manga is slower and more serious?

Usually don't make that kind of mistake... apologies for the mix up. Also puts into context Freehold's earlier statement. Here's the video I tried to link before, under spoiler, in all of its NSFW glory...

As Greylurker says.... it's very trippy and the backstory does lend something sinister to it all.... not that it needed it.

I cannot put into words his much I approve of this.

I cannot put into words how much I'm confused by this.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My interpretation:
Guy has no life. Guy collects figurines of girls. Guy lies in bed staring at the girl stuff he has, and his imagination takes over. Guy sees women as plastic production line objects. They dance for him, but he's losing control of his fantasy world - realizing it can hurt him. It ends badly... and he's back in his room again. This time, he can't help himself - the girls he fantasized about come into his room. He gets dragged back into his dream world, where he tries to use the ways of problemsolving he normally uses: FPS bullet. Until one gets too close, and he gets hurt again. So instead he tries becoming a space anime hero. Somewhere through all this, there is a girl he probably likes for real, and she's threatened or in pain. He tries to save her, but she falls away and he is ripped apart by the horror women. And he's back in his room again, still staring. Another part I read into it is that once it becomes a matter of flesh and blood and real lust, his reaction is that it's threatening.

Otherwise put: If your fantasies become too big, too large a part of your life, they will harm your ability to function in reality. How you view women in your fantasy world will impact your chances of having a real relationship.

my interpritation was a bit different.

Spoiler:
I think he had a real girlfriend and he was an ass towards her. He hurt her badly over something stupid and they broke up. Surface he's all "I don't need her" but deep down he knows he was an ass, he knows it was all his fault and he deserve to be punished for it. He knows that no matter how much he wants to fix things he can't. He went too far and threw out the best thing he was ever going to have and is now in hermit mode out of regret.

Greylurker wrote:

Interpretation:
Mine was much the same. Though, I feel that the boy had hurt the girl by trying to demand she become more like his anime idols. That he tried to change her to be 'better'. When she failed, he abandoned her in disgust. Only, now, in his solitude, he began to realize that as much as he loved his fantasies, they weren't real, and they were hurting his life. That he had let his obsession grow out of control and they were destroying him.

I like Sissyl's interpretation.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My interpretation:

Spoiler:
The guy is torn between his anime idol world and his girlfriend but he ultimately chose the idol world. The girl is being hurt by trying to live up to this expectation and because she can't, he's pushing her away (and it's obviously harming her). His obsession with idols is dragging him deeper into his idol world and it's slowly eating him away. He tries to fight it for her sake and to save himself, but he'd have to sacrifice so much of what was once so important to him that it feels like it's tearing him apart. He tries to stay strong (when he grows his legs back and fights again) but the sexualization of these idols has become a weapon that is overwhelming.

Love the ungendered character too, and I'm curious why there only seems to be the one. If it weren't for her comment to Nagate in episode 1 about eventually morphing into one gender or the other, I'd assume that she was a natural hermaphrodite.

(I use 'her' because the foreshadowing is pretty clear.)

Also apparently random anthro-bears; gotta love anime!

HOLY S@+* ROBOT GIRLS Z!!!!!!

Robot Girls? Where?!

Also, having overcome my own illusions about fictional and real women, I can't help but feel sorry for the dude in Me!Me!Me!, but I do wonder if I am the only one.

This has just not been a good week for me.... I just have not been performing my due diligence. The Winter anime guide was supposed to be mainly for 2015... turns out it was for earlier this year....

I'm just going to crawl into a hole somewhere and hide for awhile....

but not before letting you guys know that ME!ME!ME! is number three of four vids dropped by the Nihon Animator Mihonichi series.

The other three are:
The Dragon Dentist , directed by Outarou Maijou. The first.

Hill Climb Girl , directed by Azuma Tani. The second.

Carnage , directed by Akira Homma. The latest entry.

ME!ME!ME! is directed by Hibiki Yoshizaki.

All are from Studio Khara, which is run Hideaki "Evangelion" Anno and, all told, there are 30 shorts in this showcase and we're just getting the fourth. They will be dropping weekly. Incidentally, Anno designed the mascot, the logo was created by none other Hayao Miyazaki and colored by Toshio Suzuki (the co-founders of Studio Ghibli). All the shorts will feature the voice talent of Kouichi Yamadera and Megumi Hayashibara.

back into the hole I go....

No,I mean entire details changed or removed like both Gunzou's parents being alive, the Mini-Ionas, a second Human-built Super-sub, and The Asian Fog commander, Yamato herself.

It's also, you know, still going.

Coming to theaters in America... Expelled From Paradise...

Fan service in most cases hurts a good show... or at least is a turn off that you have to consciously ignore to enjoy the show. Sexist scenes shouldn't be celebrated they should be discouraged.

I'm of the Those Obnoxious Aliens/Ranma 1/2/Dominion/sex-is-funny generation. Without fanservice, those shows wouldn't have made much sense.
