Armour for familiars?

Rules Questions

Shadow Lodge

Hello all. My halfling sorcerer has just reached level 3 and I have a raven familiar that I would like to use to deliver touch spells. I'm worried about it though since it's a tiny creature and it would provoke an attack of opportunity each time. Can I give the raven some sort of armour? (Excluding mage armour.) Thanks. :)

You can possibly have unusual armor made for it (like you would a horse or other animal), but it has no way of gaining proficiency and therefore would take penalties based on that.

Dark Archive

armor for tiny or smaller creatures only adds half the ac, rounded down.

so its kinda pointless. 4 pts for tiny full plate, not worth it (unless its on a penguin)

And Glamered to look like a Tuxedo.

Where is the text for it providing less benefit though? I dont see that on the armor page on d20pfsrd?

Dark Archive

It's in a little box at the bottom of the table. It does mean that 10gp for leather booties and a leather cap would provide +1 AC.

Wow. I see that now. Thats woefully unclear and easy to miss though, isn't it?

Shadow Lodge

Thanks for your help. I'm giving Edgar lil leather booties and a leather onesie. (Tiny, raven-shaped, awesome leather armour.)

For those of us working from the PDF or printed book, that's a footnote to Table 6-8 on page 153.

Sure, the base AC bonus isn't great, but it is at least a +1 and it can be enchanted. Combine with a ring of protection and an amulet of natural armor, and that familiar could have a pretty high AC really quick.

And if the armor has an ACP of 0, is there really any meaninful penalty for being non-proficient?

I'd never seen that text about reduced armor effectiveness either... good to know.

TeaMinion, you might consider taking the "Evolved Familiar" feat from Ultimate Magic to give your familiar the "Reach" 1 point Eidolon evolution. Then it would have a "normal" reach and not have to enter your opponent's square and provoke those nasty AoOs.

Not sure how you would fluff explain it though.

Really big wings as the result of a genetic mutation that was magically induced?

Or an impressive tongue.

Which would lead to the familiar's master calling out "USE THE TONGUE!" in batle. Good times. =D

Besides a ring of protection and an amulet of natural armor, a belt of - 'ahem' - a collar of incredible dexterity can help both his AC and his touch attacks.

Also, if your DM is still allowing 3.5 feats, then Combat Familiar from Players Handbook II (pg. 76) is great. All it requires is that you have a familiar (of course) and an arcane caster level of 1. As long as your familiar is holding a touch spell, he doesn't provoke attacks of opportunity when entering an opponent's space.

Remember, a familiar can fight defensively and take a total defense action.

You can always get it a Mithral Chainshirt. It has 0 ACP and provides 2 AC. Furthermore make it +1 or have the cleric cast Magic Vestment on it with a Lesser Rod of Extend once he is lvl 8.

Also Animal Companions and Familiars can make good use of old things nobody wants anymore (+1 NA Amulets, +1 Deflection Rings...)

Just use the spell Ablative Barrier, it gives 2AC armor, besides the other effects. Great spell to put on any familiar and it last Hours/CL.

The T.N.A. (Thread Necromancers Association) approves of your comment, Tursic.

Mauler archetype makes your familiar medium at will at lvl 3. Then you would not have the 1/2 ac bonus penalty.
