i have an idea i have not seen in the books (all the books, i play 3.0, 3.5, 2.0 and pathfinder, in that order. long story). and i cut-out over 100 words just by re-checking the corerulebook. "oh wait, those item effects are EXACTLY the spells i want in the core rulebook. if the judges cant read the spells themselves. atleast it's X words under max, and clear."
i knew what i wanted to make a week ago and got a brainwave when i remembered a spell-name i glanced over earlier. and it's opposite is there too. perfect. if i get to stage 2 i better thank my 2.0 dm for the inspiration for the item. it's scary how exact the item i made is like the spells, as in reference the spells and the item does what i want. which i never read before except to find out i could cut the word count.
-wow, i keep rambling i gotta fix this. later
I don't understand anything you just said. Though you may want to remove the part about your exact word count. It's kind of specific...

Add me to the 'submitted' list, as of some point in the past few weeks. I'm pretty happy with my entry; I went with the 'design an item a month for a year' school of thought and then ultimately the entry I wound up going with was the last one I came up with. Typical. :-) (Though I still sat on it for a few weeks to make sure I wasn't just being excited by the newest idea in my head.)

I submitted too - didn't stress over it too much; got cranky with going over it over and over and over I simply junked the whole thing - then rebuilt it in 15 minutes and hit submit.
Some days you just have to let go :p
A good lesson, and one I finally learned. I wanted to participate last year but didn't because I didn't think I would be able to design a good enough item. This was a mistake. My submission is in and if nothing else, I'm just glad to have the courage to hit submit. Still, one has to get over others reading their work if one wants to be paid to write. Good luck to you all. You have my deepest respect just for entering.

...you have already won. Seriously. Taking that first step is sometimes the hardest. But once you get going, you build up confidence much faster. Full speed ahead. And good luck.
My two cents,

Your submission was received 5 minutes agoAnd now? Now, I pummel myself with all the doubting madness of how stupid it was to post so early and why I didn't have <name a random acquaintance here> proof it beforehand and how it should've been sexier somehow and how I'm sure I've jinxed myself by submitting while sick and...
How `bout I just breathe, get some sleep, and start putting my archetype to paper, hmm?
How about you?
I had a great idea for an item, but no time to put to bed till today. So, we'll see how I do. *laughs* Okay *I* think it's a great idea, but then I admit to total bias. Work and Christmas ate most of my December. I'm basically going to assume that nothing will come of it, and be pleasantly suprised if I hear otherwise, otherwise I'll drive myself insane with the waiting.

*sobs* I forgot one tiny snippet of information...one that they will need...something along the lines of a DC or bonus number implied but not expressed. Waaah. I think that may sink my entry. Oh well. I don't think I can manage the agonizing here at the fora over the next 18 days so I will try to stay awaya s much as posible. Wishing everyone luck! (Especially me!!!)...and happy New Year!!!

Well, I'm in again, this year as well. Wishing all the best to everyone - I've really enjoyed (and on occasion, play-tested) the entries from previous years, and have no doubt I will again this year.
Like several others, I edited and re-edited my entry -- who knew something under 300 words could be written so many ways...? -- until, at zero-dark-thirty in the morning (I'm not saying WHICH morning, mind you...), one of my cats reminded me of one of the basic laws of physics - namely that a laptop and a lapkitty cannot exist in the same place at the same time (and boy, didn't THAT make for some creative editing when he jumped onto the keyboard...), so I took the hint, cleaned up my entry for the last time, and hit submit before the neglected little monster could do any further damage. So, of course, any typos, bad game mechanics, etc, are to be considered TOTALLY his fault...
Speaking of which, from the noises coming from the kitchen, it's apparantly either feeding time at the zoo, or a firetruck is passing my house, so I'd better go see what the commotion is. Again, Good luck, all!!

[deliberate misunderstanding] If only I'd waited a couple more years before entering, for this time when the Paizo judges are handing out module writing prizes to everyone who enters for the first time this year... :D [/deliberate misunderstanding]

Don't give up completely on the basis of one missing number or fact; as far as I understand the system, the judges assess Round 1 entries on the basis of how incredibly awesome they look to the judges. Items such as *this* and *this* have made it into the top flight in previous years by impressing the judges with the flare, creativity, and originality displayed - despite some problems with the mechanical sides of the items as presented...

Entered. Previewed it about four times to get it just right. Am happy with said item. Changed tiny bits of phrasing to keep under 300 words and checked it in both Word and Open Office to make sure the numbers are right and came up with 293 and 287 words respectively. Had gamer and non gamer friend look at.
Am confident. Good luck to everyone else as well.

I think for me it's not so much the jitters after turning in anything. It always hits a couple days before they announce the 32 that nerves come into play. Cause that's when you find out if you sunk or swam :).
My area is having a gaming convention the following weekend, which is great for this.
I'll have to keep my own hands busy Monday and Tuesday, though.

Done.
Spent all month agonizing over it, tweaking it, fiddling with it, writing and rewriting it, and thought I finally had it where I wanted it.
Then my laptop nuked itself yesterday.
Spent 13 hours wiping, reinstalling and getting it back to life--albeit with some minor/new/annoying driver issues/conflicts (thanks as ever, Vista).
SO, after all that, I came up with something wholly/completely different and...now I can agonize over whether that was a good, bad, or amazingly terrible idea.
I'd start agonizing over what to do for Round 2, but I don't want to jinx myself since I have to get past Round 1 first...which I won't know for a while.
SO, Guess we'll see...
...once the waiting's over...
...which isn't at 2:01pm...
...nope...
...not for a while yet...
...lots O' waiting...
...waiting...
...plus some more post-submittal agonizing...
...then some pre-reveal stressing/worrying/wondering/hoping
...but, mostly waiting...
(and agonizing)
:p

I looked up a previous year's item while touching up my own to check a minor formatting issue. Thanks to the Paizo posting glitch, my submission was almost posted as a reply to the Spellstrike Vambraces
I had the exact same issue (though I was looking up a different item) - I almost had hit "submit", until I realized (thankfully by looking at my submission in the preview mode) that the item I was looking at was now the main thread of my post, and I was about to send in my submission as a reply to that post. Hope no one else fell victim to that trap! (Good thing I usually play a rogue; guess I rolled well on my trapsense...)

This was my first year entering, and I have to agree, it felt good to just finish it and get it in. Even if I don't make the first 32, I'm considering "playing along at home" just to test myself and practice a little for next year. As much as I do most of my writing to my schedule, it can be good to write to someone else's deadlines.
Once again, good luck all, and Happy New Year!
Nebulous_Mistress |
This was my first time entering. Always wanted to, always missed the deadline. So much work for such a tiny item. There's an elegance in describing something clearly and beautifully in such a small number of words, an elegance that I normally lose by falling to the trap of description.
...like that sentence...

The item I created last year did not even get used in my home games. I figure if I won't even use it for my NPC's then maybe it should not have advanced. I really hope I advance. I would hate to give up such a nice item(IMHO), and not see it published anywhere.
One thing I did when starting to DM is to award role-playing with a random game mastery cards. I create magic items for each of the cards, however most of those are superstar inspired-(winners and rejects :)
