Good Guys!

Friday, May 6, 2016

Last week we revealed a couple of bad guys from October's Deadly Foes set of Pathfinder Battles miniatures, so it seemed only fitting that this week we tip the celestial scales back in favor of good! Only this time, because the Sun is shining in Seattle and I'm ready to leave work behind for a relaxing weekend, I want to OVER-tip the scales, so as a special Spring bonus I'm going to reveal three "good" minis today!

Up first is the simple-but-effective Celestial Lantern. This low-level lawful good spirit eagerly converses with and assists other goodly creatures, and can even be taken as a familiar or summoned by even low-level casters. Molded in clear plastic with a golden lattice, the Celestial Lantern keeps the light of good alive against the darkness. The Celestial Lantern is a Small, common figure.

Celestial Sentinels are disciplined watchers for good-aligned deities, often guarding specific places or individuals important to pure-hearted gods. Their ranks fill the celestial armies, where they are great enemies of evil fiends, showing them no mercy. At CR 4, they're also among the most commonly summoned allies for lower-level spellcasters, making them a nice addition to the ranks alongside Celestial Lanterns and the like. The Celestial Hound is a Medium, common figure.

To round out our goodly trio we've got the Celestial Trumpeter, a messenger of good deities and the vanguard of divine armies. Their glorious trumpets transform into magic +4 greatswords, adding significant punch to a significant array of magic spells, justifying their CR 14 status. The Celestial Trumpeter is a Medium, uncommon figure.

And that's it for this week (though more celestials remain for future reveals)! I wish you all the best of weekends to come, and look forward to showing off another round of figures next week!

Until then, I remain...

Very Nice - I've been waiting to get my hands on some Hounds and these look great!

I think the Hound Archon -- first since the original Harbinger set way back when! -- will be a hit, and I like the Lantern Archon too, especially since it looks like it could be useful as a spell effect or some kind of dressing too. (Maybe a dancing lights spell?) The Trumpet Archon looks great, although I'd bet from past experience with the old Angelfire Trumpet Archon that demand for it will be limited.

Dark Archive

Wow, a "Lantern Archon", "Hound Archon" and "Trumpet Archon" - all Archons from the Bestiary (1)!

These fill a really needed niche in my collection and in Pathfinder Battles - a great addition, each at the right variety.

Now we only need the "Astral Deva" (Summon Monster IX), "Planetar" (on the cover of "Hell´s Vengeance" #6) and maybe a "Solar" (although at CR 23 this would probably not be needed but would make for a nice rare).

Maybe some of these are from the "more celestials (which) remain for future reveals". ;-)

Thanks again for these great miniature revelations, Eric!

What's with the obfuscated names?

It's not so much that - Paizo could license them that IP. They do it for all the PF-specific stuff, such as the recent Technic League Captain. Heck, even the art they're modeled after is Paizo IP.

The problem is that if they use any of Wizards' IP - "quasit", "vrock", "hound archon" - they'd have to print the entire Open Gaming License in every pack.

Easier to just change the names. ^_^

Also - great minis, Mr. Mona! Glad to finally have a few more celestials... my old ones were getting lonely. ^_^

(Hopefully one of your yet-to-be-revealed celestials is a lillend; I never liked the one from Blood War.)

Those are awesome. Been wondering when we'd starting seeing some angel minis!

I'm loving this set so far! Thank you!

Oh - I just wanted to also say Erik, that I finally got around to opening my Rusty Dragon set (I moved across the country, pf minis had to wait), and I just wanted to comment on how much better the quality was compared to previous sets. No smudged faces, paints looked great. I was very happy. A huge step in the right direction.

Thank you for your continued effort in improving this line!

I think it is actually closer to this. Wizkids doesn't have the same Open Game License (?) as Paizo, so while Paizo can grant rights to their original artwork for Wizkids to reproduce, the OGL names for the creatures are a bit more dicey...

I'm happy to see the Celestial Lantern finally get made. It will fill a gap nicely.

The Celestial Trumpeter has an interesting alternative to a peg to suspend it in the air. I like this approach.

I second this. Flying stands make me soooo nervous. I've had so many break on me :-(

nice stuff

you might want to check center of mass on that trumpeteer before it goes to production!
Looks like it's on the edge of tipping over.

I'd wondered when Wizkids would start doing this for flying minis, they've been doing this for models in Heroclix for a good while now. I think it looks better, and is a lot less likely to break than the flimsy flight pegs.

Great to see some Celestials! I wonder if this is it for this set?

I'll go ahead and agree with regards to Medium & larger minis, but I had an interesting opportunity recently...

I use Alea Tools magnetic condition/spell markers. So each PC mini gets a very small magnetic pad stuck in the recess at the bottom. My latest PC has a familiar. I took a spare Tiny mini for an appropriate creature, and severed the bottom of the flying stand. Then I glued that to a small rare-earth modeling magnet, creating a new, magnetic base. It's strong enough that I can just stick it to the top of the PC mini's plastic base and it stays there. I can move it around, and move it to other PCs... it's kind of awesome.

If Small & Tiny minis get more substantial stands, there'll be less opportunity for modding like this.

too much money + RNG for not actually looking like this

The article lists the rarity >.>

And it looks like they're what you wanted :)

Yippee! Celestials! Lanterns, Hounds and Trumpets oh my! These are some of my faves. Nice to see they are on their way as minis.

Kalindlara is correct. The entire point of the license WizKids has is that it allows them to use Pathfinder IP. Wizards' IP is not something we can offer, though—they'd have to use the OGL, and that would be silly.

Shadow Lodge

Knew I should have left Paizo off of Paizo IP.

Does the OGL have to be readable?
They can do amazingly small structures on crystals these days, shouldn't take more than a square millimeter of silicone :o)

You could always do what the D&D line is doing and make the OGL print so small and illegible on the base that no-one could really dispute if it was there or not :)

BTW - Thanks for making all the mini's names clearly legible on the bases, that is one of my biggest peeves about the D&D line. Paizo always seems to make good choices regarding these sets.

No kidding, Berk! I find so many of Wizards' choices about their minis line incomprehensible, and that would have to be top of the list. The printing on their old minis was worlds better. And they've done it set after set. I just don't get it.

Yeah, me neither. Presumably it's cost (and I suppose it could be a Wizkids decision rather than WotC). It seems like such an obviously inferior choice though. Surely somebody should be able to see that. :(

I love the "hound archon". It will be a great addition to my collection.
