Two from the Codex

Friday, April 10, 2015

We've already revealed a ton of cool monsters and dungeon dressing from June's Dungeons Deep set of Pathfinder Battles prepainted plastic miniatures, and there are more to come in the weeks between now and the set's release. But Dungeons Deep has more than just creepy crawlies, and this week I'd like to focus on two figures from the set that are drawn from the fantastic art in the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: NPC Codex.

Do you have the NPC Codex? I absolutely adore this book. Using the ready-made stats provided there has cut my prep time considerably in my own games, and it's great to have a whole army of classed characters at my fingertips. The book's excellent art is also a great resource for Pathfinder Battles.

As I travel around the country from convention to convention, I always enjoy chatting with hobby retailers and with folks selling our minis at their booths. And they almost always tell me the same thing: "We need more player character minis!"

It's unusual feedback, from a certain perspective. Hard-core minis collectors are often in the opposite camp. Over the years, they've already got a ton of humans, dwarves, and elves, and would much prefer that we focus our efforts on monsters, particularly monsters than have never before been made in prepainted plastic. Unfortunately, you can't run a successful miniatures business catering only to the hard-core collectors, as a set filled with nothing but catoblepases and flail snails is unlikely to impress the more casual collectors, who outnumber the hard-cores by at least an order of magnitude. And yet those hard-core collectors are the heart of the line, the folks who keep me always seeking out new and fun things to do with the minis line, and who support us release after release.

Customers at retail stores, generally speaking, come in looking for a figure to represent their character (a tough job for a catoblepas). The new Iconic Heroes boxed sets are a good answer to that type of customer, but the fact of the matter is that the mainline Pathfinder Battles sets need to serve both constituencies, which means I've got my job cut out for me when deciding which player character figures to include in a set. Too many, and I lose the hard-core collectors. Too few, and I lose the retailers.

In this environment, the NPC Codex is a godsend. Filled with awesome images of awesome characters, it gives me a great chance to pick and choose the figures I think will have the most appeal to just about everyone.

Here are a couple of my selections for Dungeons Deep.

This dashing gentleman is the Paladin of Abadar, Golarion's god of commerce and law. I've been looking for an excuse to include a "super good guy" mini in the line for a long time, and when I saw this guy's art on page 126 of the NPC Codex, I knew I'd found my man. He's perfect for any paladin or armored crusader in your campaign, whether as a player character or a haughty, annoying NPC. The Paladin of Abadar is a Medium, rare figure.

The imposing Dragon Smiter is also a paladin, but you wouldn't know that from looking at her. In fact, she's so covered in armor that it's difficult to tell much about her at all, except that you definitely don't want to get on her bad side. (Honestly, the figure is so heavily armored that it works as a male or female, and probably could be a human, elf, or half-elf with no one batting an eye.) The Dragon Smiter appears on page 120 of the NPC Codex, where she's a lawful good human paladin. For my money, she could just as easily be a villain. Either way, she looks cooool. The Dragon Smiter is a Medium, uncommon figure.

And here's a shot of both final figures together, haunting a plant in my office. I think they came out great!

See you next week for another look at upcoming figures from the Pathfinder Battles line!

Is the Paladin of Abadar dual-wielding a short spear and longsword?

Those are great! Even though I'm pretty sure I fall into the hard-core collector category, I never mind having more PC's; it gives me a wider range of stuff to use for NPC's, it gives my players a wider range to choose from, and as a reseller on the secondary market, it enables me to satisfy more customers. I particularly love heavily armored minis for exactly the reason you mentioned, Erik: they can often be anybody, elf, half-orc, human, male, female, whatever, so they appeal to players with all sorts of characters.
And as always, I really appreciate the window into your decision-making procedure. It's great to know how things go down, and it's further evidence (if we needed any) how responsive you and your company are to feedback from all the different sectors of the gaming community.
That said, more non-combatant NPC's, please! :-)

These two look fantastic. I am one of those hardcore collectors but I will always find room in my collection for NPC minis like these. Both serve as great PC models and also as villains, win-win. The details look fantastic, but I am assuming the two pot plant defenders are paint proofs. Besides I don't think I have a dual wielding spear and sword man, in fact he would have been perfect for the Blaine wielding shelynite in my latest campaign. Perhaps my only critisism is the slightly floppy look to the weapons on the paladin of Abadar. Looking like a winning set.

Three questions for you:
Any word on the iconics set beyond set 3? I hope we'll be seeing set 4 for some of the other iconics we haven't seen in plastic yet.

Also any word on the super-booster? Are we still on for irovetti and feiya redone?

Any word on other lines, perhaps huge minis?

Wait flail snail, I want a flail snail mini!

Well, that looks NOTHING like me......hmmph.

I like that you can clip the Paladin's spear into a mace or a staff-- either would work well for a cleric. I wonder if the iconics in the controversial Advanced Class book will be used in the same way, or saved for future iconics sets.

Is the Dragon Smiter really a female? I like non stereotype minis, sure, but I don't think anyone at the table could guess that.

Under realistic plate armor it's impossible to tell someone's gender. The post of plate is to deflect blows away from the body so there needs to be a significant gap between the metal and your body for padding and the like. It's also important that it doesn't run along your body in a way that makes transferring energy between the metal and your body inside, hence the weird curves in armor that don't match up to a male body.

She's female because the character in the NPC Codex is female. The art there is just as inscrutable. :)

The Dragon Smiter is a wonderful figure and I don't mind that she isn't in some kind of bikini plate armor. For all those who asked for females in more realistic armor, this is an answer. This figure looks wonderful and I agree with Erik, would be just as useful as a villainess as a paladin.

The Paladin of Abadar however, I think I would like to convert the sword arm into a shield arm. I have an old shield in my bits box that would o great with him. :-)

What is the battlecry of a paladin of Abadar?:
CHARGE!

...and here I thought it would be, "SHOW ME THE MONEY!"

Those are just wonderful minis!

I'm in the camp of liking almost all NPC's. These two will be very useful.

I agree that having some figures for the PCs is always welcome.

However, I find that lack of PC figures with shields, specifically Tower Shields surprising. The only one that came close was the Pale Tower Guard from RoW.

I don't know what kind of Paladin runs around with a spear in one hand and a sword in another, but I can't imagine he's a very effective Paladin :)

Regarding tower shields, there's an old D&D Mini that has one - the Soldier of Thrane. The Shieldwall Soldier might do as well.

However, I understand that something a little more recent might be nice. :)

I can't even find a Paizo illustration of a tower shield carrier.

Speaking as a Hard Core collector, I am very happy to see more pc/npc figures available. While I really like Paizo's take on most every monster they have made, I really don't need multiple sculpts of generic monsters (i.e. wyverns). I would rather have have more pc/npc's. I find that GM's and players greatly appreciate having a selection of minis to choose from to find one that best depicts their pc/npc. Its great to see more presence of pc/npc's, and I am really looking forward to the release of this set.

There is one thing I'll miss about the AP sets - the truly unique minis. The Clockwork Reliquary is a unique and amazing mini, and I doubt it would ever exist outside of a Shattered Star set. This is especially concerning for Iron Gods, particularly for unique foes like the Overlord Robot.

That said, I'm glad AP-related minis are still filtering into sets. Lost Coast was really great for this. (I'd love some minis from Second Darkness, though...) I'm also really glad we're getting more Pathfinder-specific minis. I've wanted a Daughter of Urgathoa since forever.

The NPC Codex is all right, but I would love to see more of what makes Golarion unique - and if they make great PC minis too, awesome! Anaphexia agents. Gray Gardeners. Razmiran priests. I love that we've gotten Hellknights and Thrune agents. I am really surprised that we haven't gotten a Red Mantis Assassin yet.

Anyway... just my opinion. :)

Yep, I've commented before on the ridiculousness of the Red Mantis not being represented yet. That's inexplicable to me.
And if we're looking for Golarion-linked stuff, *and* we've got dressing items on the table now, a Galtan guillotine would be cool! I don't think there's presently anything like that available, and I know it would be popular.

Are there any plans to expand the gnome or halfling figurines? Say maybe a rogue male gnome, investigator, alchemist or ranger? I play gnomes a lot and that selection is small....

Yes, I've got my eye on a few more gnomes and halflings.

I'd like to do male and females of all PC races for each class type. (Not necessarily each class, which is probably impossible.)

At least each role, maybe? (Male & female elf warrior/mage/priest/skilled, M&F dwarf W/M/P/S, etc.)

And at least a male and a female of all the obscure races - strix, skinwalker, shabti, so on, so forth.

Also, a mini for the gillman from the Advanced Race Guide would be cool. If I play one, I want her to look like that. :)

Thank you for listening to our feedback. :)

Would like to see a ratfolk mini too at some stage :)

Haven't they done some ratfolk already? Seems some of the ratfolk I have came from a pathfinder figure set.

I had a weird feeling like this was the case, too. They've done wererats, but that's all I can think of. :)

Guess I was thinking of the wererats. :-(
