Starfinder Iconic Characters Revealed!

Thursday, April 13, 2017

Last Friday, our friends at Game Informer released a sneak preview of all seven iconic characters for Starfinder. We wanted to share that image with you as well, but first—what do we mean by "iconic character," anyway?

As many of you probably already know, in the Starfinder Roleplaying Game, as in Pathfinder, every class is represented by an iconic character: a single individual who illustrates and embodies the concept behind that class. Originally, way back when Paizo was still publishing the magazines Dungeon and Dragon, this was just a convenient shorthand for us—rather than explaining to each new artist what made a ranger a ranger, we could just show them a single piece of art and say, "Draw this ranger." But to our surprise, as these reference characters appeared in more and more illustrations, fans began to grow attached to them and wonder about their stories. So when we launched Pathfinder, we went ahead and gave these characters names and backstories, and they quickly became some of our most popular characters, going on to star in comics, audio dramas, and more. (I know that I personally have a heck of a lot of fun writing Valeros, Merisiel, and all the rest in the Pathfinder comics!)

Now, with Starfinder, we're excited to unveil a whole new lineup of iconic characters to showcase their respective classes and races! In the coming months, we'll be giving you each character's backstory in blog posts here at paizo.com, but for now here's a sneak preview of their art, plus their names, races, and classes. Going clockwise and starting with the leftmost character, we've got:

Raia (lashunta technomancer): Lashuntas are a race of telepaths, and technomancers are the magical version of computer programmers, hacking the laws of physics.

Iseph (android operative): Androids are artificial people, and operatives use stealth and skill to get in and out of dangerous situations.

Obozaya (vesk soldier): Vesk are powerful reptilian aliens, and soldiers specialize in heavy weapons and armor.

Keskodai (shirren mystic): Shirrens are insectile people who recently broke free from a predatory hive mind, and mystics channel the universe's mysterious energies, often through faith in a god.

Altronus (kasatha solarian): Kasathas are four-armed aliens from a desert world, and solarians shape the energy of stars and black holes into armor and weapons for themselves.

Navasi (human envoy): Humans are... well, humans, and envoys use wit and charm to bolster their allies and demoralize or befuddle enemies.

Quig (ysoki mechanic): Often called "ratfolk," ysoki are a plucky and hotheaded race, and mechanics build their own custom drones or rely on an implanted AI to aid them in combat.

Which of course leads to the question—which of these is your favorite? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned for more Starfinder previews and design blogs!

Which genders are these iconics ? Did anyone take notes when they were individually introduced ?

If they introduce a fungoid alien species, that could become a very confusing topic.

"I'm sex #10,347. My pilot is sex #12,658, and the gunner is sex #4,502."

human female, vesk female, Android agender, lashunta female, I'm not sure about the other three.

All food is space food if you add space.

Don't forget, the Drift.

Race-wise, my favourites are:
Lashunta
Android
Vesk

Class-wise, my favourites are:
Technomancer
Soldier
Mystic
Solarian

So I guess that that makes Raia and Obozaya my over-all favourites. :)

I don't have any favorites of the Iconics. :) Sorry, guys.

*sigh* There just has to be a bare midriff, apparently...
At least it's an improvement, and it's a lot better than some other games, I guess.
But everything else looks great! :)

At least they lent me some clothes for the photoshoot.

This avatar is so embarrassing. -_-

I have to ask... why is Iseph staring at you?

Mohawk envy... hers is clearly better and he knows it.

First impression when looking over that crew: James Sutter watched a LOT of Farscape when designing this. (Feature not a bug).

I like Iseph the best.

When and where can I purchase the Iconic miniatures?

Ninja Division/Soda Pop Miniatures is producing all official miniatures for characters and ships i believe. they have some CG rendersof the iconics up on their Facebook page and i think the renders are on the Paizo twitter page as well.

Nothing against these iconics, but my favorite will always be the Dralasite.

Dark Archive

I definitely love Raia and Iseph, but I think all of them are really cool.

Why does Quig not get boldfaced like the others? Man, Ratfolk always get the shaft.

Clearly Quig grabbed the bold typeface for use in a different mechanical device. Also, if YOU were going to shoot at one of those entries, wouldn't you be more likely to fire at a bold one?

It's a feature, not a bug!

Don't judge!

I done undid your "feature." Mouse-guy now emboldened.

Thank you, Vic.

James, when are we going to get some backstories on these iconics? The backstories are some of my favorite parts of the Pathfinder Society Pregens.

I know that this year's Free RPG Day will be a Bestiary rather than a game (sad face) so next year you totally need to do We Be Space Goblins!

♫ Ram the Ship!
Run the Gun!
Lance longshanks!
Here we come!
Bestest ranks
Of Villainy and Scum!
Fiercest ships
That ever flew
Held together
With spit and glue
No fix-it gobs
In our crew!
Smash and fight!
Raid Starhive!
Gnash and bite!
No Bugs get out alive!
Flash! Boom! Ignite!
We Be Goblins FIVE! ♫

♫ Fiery plasma, oh what fun!
Shoot it from a hefty gun!
Smash their airlocks, make 'em hiss!
Goblins never, ever miss!
Board the vessel! Make it burn!
Hunt 'em down at every turn!
Gut the captain, take the head!
We be goblins! YOU BE DEAD! ♫

Quig because I like the idea of a tiny Ysoki going around the ship fixing everything and having a buddy Ai or droid.

How exactly do mystics work in Starfinder? And what deities are available?

They sound like clerics. Obviously revamped to be compatible. For space clerics think Farscape and star wars.

Do far, I just know about pharasma and Iomadae.

We finally have a dedicated pet class with mechanical pets!

I've been wanting this for a long time. My favorite Star Wars character I've made fought like that so I can finally port her over to Pathfinder.

AlgaeNymph wrote:

Mystics don't require a connection to a deity, but they can have one if they want.

Most of the standard Pathfinder deities are still around, plus some accended AIs.

There is no division between divine and arcane spells.

All spellcasting is spontaneous.

The can cast spells of up to 6th level.

There is a druid-like specialism available.

My personal guess is they are more like a cross between an Oracle and a Jedi Consular than a standard cleric.

Mystics sound like a WIS based class that has some deep understanding of the ways of the reality, something akin to an Arcanist but with a wisdom basis instead of intelligence. I would bet that worship of a god goes hand in hand with that kind of understanding, seeing the gods as a manifestation of some principles of existence or a path to follow to become like them but isnt actually required for the kind of understanding and powers the class has.

Ysoki, Obozaya and NAvasi need to work on their trigger discipline.

Raia isn't wielding her weapons and the others have hands hidden so I cannot see if they do have proper trigger discipline.

Are we going to get stats for the iconics pre-release?

I think that would be great as it would give us an idea on the game mechanics of each class/race.

I'm going to assume that the order of iconic backgrounds/stats etc. is going to be kept secret as is the creator of each iconic? :(

Trigger discipline may not work the same way on futuristic guns. For all we know, future-guns may have tech that reads adrenaline levels and only fires guns when intended, so there would be no need to learn trigger discipline in the same way as with present-guns.

Then there wouldn't be any need for triggerguards either imho :)

I guess it's part of being an "adventurer" who didn't receive proper firearm training.

Could work similar to a skinlinked Smartlink™ I/II system from Shadowrun, where the cybernetics in the gun link to the user via either external gear or internal cyberwear.

Or could just be one of those little art hiccups by fallible, harried creators who were worried about a dozen other art details. :)

Sure, you tell us their race and class, but since this game has themes and starship roles too, shouldn't we get to know their those, as well? I mean, which one is the pilot, the engineer (my guess is Quig based on what Owen said), or the captain? Who in that crew is an Outlaw, Ace Pilot, Scholar, or other theme?

YES! Please tell us each iconic's theme!
