OK folks, here's the Discussion thread. First off, you'll find a link to a map of the Moonshaes in my profile. The adventure is the old classic U1 The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh; if you've played it before, I hope it will still be of interest to you!
The adventure takes place in the fishing town of Saltmarsh on the island of Highport in the Korrin Archipelago. You have all found yourselves here for various reasons, perhaps chasing rumours of swords-for-hire, maybe you just got off a ship here from somewhere else. Whichever way, you're in the common room of an inn called The Full Moon.
It would be great if some of you could already know one another.
Gabra is a fixture in the market place where she listens to troubles. After listening to so many, she can quite often offer advice as well, which she dispenses liberally adorned with gnomic utterances.
There's no reason for her not to know everyone at least by sight and she'd be familiar to anyone who was a regular visitor to the town.
Ghindor arrives home. He appears somewhat shorter than his 5’1” frame carries, and smells of odd fish. The burly man has ripped off his shirt, and his orange hair hangs damp with sweat and river waters. Strange inks adorn his stout chest and biceps. He carries a large silvery hammer in one hand, yet tugs a soaked sack behind him. He makes his way into the marketplace, deliberate steps suggest either pain or fatigue labor his powerful legs.
Upon seeing the flame-haired Fate, Gabra the Accursed, Ghindor exhales an audible sigh. “Funny ting, isn’ta ita, Gabra, tata after all my journeys and whata I’ve seen…I’m actually happy ta see your face!” The former fisherman drops his gear and throws open his arms in a welcoming gesture. “I’ve gotta say, Gabra, tata I’ve gota myself some problems. Ta firsta one is tat I’ve gotta no money lefta. Ta second problem is tat I’ve gotta no money righta! Hawh-hah-hah. Butta seriously, letta us eatta something, yeah?”

Ghindor and Gabra are obviously old acquaintances; I'm happy for the rest of you to be incomers, which is especially true for Byggvir, as very very few people will have seen an elf.
I'll post a link to a town map and general info that could be acquired by being there for a view days.
Sounds good, I was leaning toward having Hrolf be new to Saltmarsh anyway. His is a straightforward story of a young fellow out to see the world, use his talents to find fame and fortune, etc, etc. He comes from a fairly well-to-do family (hence a pocket full of gold), but his ambitions lie higher than merely entering the family business.
"No money and you seek the Accursed One? Times must be hard indeed, Ghindor."
She looks around the square to see if there's anyone in immediate need of trouble removal.
"I will feed you and you will repay me with your troubles." She picks up her bag and leads the way into a nearby tavern.
"Eh, wita no money and being a recenta freed slave, I figured you over all would know my worries. Don'ta worry abouta big tab- I can win any drinking betta!"
At the sight of a familiar face- even one destined for tragedy, Ghindor finds some measure of peace in his recently-tossed life.

I figured I'd be new to the area and not know anyone. By the way could you email me more info on your elves and where they are from in your world? mordulin at yahoo dot com

I assume Ghindor is supposed to have a Norwegian type accent, but I keep reading it like a cheesy Italian accent. I'll try to break myself of that habit.

Spoiler:
Elves used to inhabit the world in greater numbers, but more and more have retreated to the parallel world of Faerie aka the Spirit World, which closely mirrors the real world but is more vibrant, and more... well, just plain 'more'; water is clearer, mountains are higher etc etc. But this also means that the night is darker, shadows are deeper, and faerie folk don't think exactly like humans. There are two broad distinctions of Elves - the lios-alfar lit. 'light elves' and dock-alfar lit. 'dark elves'. The lios-alfar are represented by the Elf Adventurer character class as far as PCs go. Lios-alfar are tall, often taller than Men, and slender, with pointed ears and eyes that are very striking. Think the standard depiction of Tolkien's High Elves. But, like the elves of European mythology, they can often have a strange sense of humour, and whimsy. Although to them, their way of looking at things is perfectly normal. Elven communities still in the mortal world can be found hidden away in the deepest forests. Does that help? Oh, and the dock-alfar... well don't think 'drow' - they're not much like them. Shorter than the lios-alfar, with large, dark eyes and almost white skin and hair, the dock-alfar live in underground realms in the mortal world and Faerie. They are reputedly masters of illusion magic.

LOL
I can drop the accent thing, if it helps. Just assume he's got something in character...

No, don't do that! It's just a humorous observation about myself, I don't want it to change how you portray your character.

BTW, I've figured out my encumbrance to be 90 lbs. and movement rate to be 9. I really like how the abbreviated weight system works (10 lbs for equipment)
Fabes, you already know this, but just so everyone else is aware as well -
Advance warning of impending absence.
I'm away from Friday morning (June 5) to Sunday evening (June 7) UK time. Directing a show and then going to Birmingham for some gaming goodness in the form of the UK Games Con.
