For anyone else wondering, Waylon Stanmore is Malinor.
To be clear, that's a Woodman of Emyn Vorn. We have to be careful in avoiding a one-to-one mapping. You can't get a Hound of Mirkwood because this game will never go near Mirkwood.
In case people aren't clear on this, check out THIS MAP. Eriador is where our game is set. It's the land between the Ered Luin (Blue Mountains) and the Misty Mountains. Emyn Vorn is the forest on the coast just north of the word "great" in "The Great Sea", about ninety leagues south of the Shire. Mirkwood, of course, is the enormous forest in Rhovanion on the eastern half of the map.
That said, we can certainly reskin the Hounds of Mirkwood as a Hound of Minhiriath (or something). They're descendants of the more or less angelic hounds of Oromë the Hunter from before the First Age... so they could show up almost anywhere.

How do I expend the 4 exp? I am still waiting on the books and used the character generator to build my guy.
When you get your books, turn to page 196 of the Rule Book for your answer. You'll probably be buying a point of Valour or Wisdom, but could instead purchase a weapon or cultural weapon skill rank.

Ok, I posted my attempt at a character. Let me know if I am missing something.

1. Sorry my copy-paste job stripped all your nice formatting. But my first observation -is- formatting. Please put your character in format mentioned above (first post and also in #3 immediately above).2. I think this is a great character. Lots of flavor!
3. Be sure to amend from "Elf of Mirkwood" to "Sindarin elf of Lindon".
4. My only mechanical note is that you might consider dropping a point into Explore unless you're creating an elf who has never before left Lindon. Explore comes up a lot....
<sob> You destroyed my formatting! lol
Well. Whew. It took a lot of work, and I still have to fill in a few things but I think I got the profile for this alias setup mostly how you want it.
Explore. Noted. I will see about spending the 4 exp in a bit. As a not, I assume since this is all 'previous experience' we don't note it in the Experience and Total Experience and such?

Okay. I haven't been able to connect properly from home for awhile, but I've got the character basically ready. I'll get a profile and mechanics up when I can.
Going with the Rider. Cynewulf, formerly one of the King's Guard, banished from court after crossing Wormtongue (might as well steal from the master). Heading up north following rumours of Saruman's trade connections hoping to find evidence proving her right and getting her back in the king's good graces. (I think the timeline is right for this: Saruman's plots are ongoing, but we're still before Gandalf escapes and spills the beans, right?)

Okay, I'm happy to have plot/background hooks with anyone.
Character sheet and background should be updated (and a slight name change since I kept putting a 'r' in the name anyway on accident). Hopefully the background is alright and has a decent hook for the GM. I'm thinking I might try and flesh it out a bit more at some point but the site has been going down so much, it's frustrated me too much.
Waylon Stanmore |
I could have helped care for Cynewulf's mount if it was injured at some point in your travels.

So as I noted in the Recruitment thread, everyone who expressed an interest is invited. Post here if you're going to play. Scranford, please let me know if you're going to join no later than Monday the 12th.
So our roster is:
* CariMac - Current Player - Character: Primrose Bunce, hobbit of the Shire
* Spazmodeus - Current Player - Character: Morwenn, Ranger of the North* ignuspyre - planning on a Sindarin elf Warden
* Malinor - planning a Silvan elf
* thejeff - thinking about either a Rider of Rohan or a Sindarin elf Scholar
* The Pale King - Interested but undecided on what to play
* Arknight - Interested but undecided on what to play
* scranford - Deciding whether to join
I know that it's been hard to post recently, but I believe everyone's now had sufficient time to sign in. I believe the roster is now:
* CariMac - Primrose Bunce, hobbit of the Shire, Wanderer
* Spazmodeus - Morwenn, Ranger of the North, Wanderer
* ignuspyre - Calahdrel, Sindarin elf of Lindon, Warden
* Malinor - Waylon Stanmore, Woodman of Emyn Vorn, Wanderer
* thejeff - Cynewulf, Rider of Rohan
* scranford - Joining, no character yet.
I haven't heard from The Pale King or Arknight. They're invited to submit characters but at the moment I'm going to assume they've lost interest.
Primrose Bunce |
If you haven't, I highly suggest you look into Lord of the Rings Online. It's an awesome way to play in Middle Earth. I just ride around the shire looking at the trees and the sky some days.
Waylon Stanmore |
I have spent the 4 EXP on Valor.
GM Tarondor |
While we're waiting for Cynewulf to be finished and to hear from scranford, could Waylon and Calahdrel please add these (and the answers) to their character sheet?
THE QUESTIONNAIRE
Once you're ready, why don't each of you tell me (below your character sheet) the following, from your character's perspective:
1) What is your near term goal in life?
2) What long-term goal do you envision pursuing if adventure doesn't sweep you away?
3) What do you think about adventures in general?
4) What is most precious to you?
5) What would cause you to give that up?
6) Are you married? Do you want to be?
7) Goblins, wizards and walking trees? Do you think they really exist?
8) You carry an item that is precious to you. What is it?
Waylon Stanmore |
I have posted my answers.
scranford |
Just go ahead and start without me. I will make a character, but unfortunately the time I had to work on it, the boards were down, and now I'm on an extended business trip. If I had the profile made I could play, but finding the couple of hours to work on the character, and not having my book with me makes it tough. I'll get my Man of Bree treasure finder ready, and if something opens up he'll be ready to go.
Lister Goatleaf |
OK. This is scranford's character. Still need to spend my experience, and answer the background questions, but with your approval, I'll dot the game thread, and won't hold things up anymore. Should be able to finish the rest tomorrow morning.
Calahdrel |
I got a 12 on the Feat die for my Explore but I don't know that I have any Traits that would link to that aside from maybe Nimble or Elven Lore possibly? I'm not too worried about it, but those are the Traits you're talking about, right?
So this was the first roll you asked for in some cases, that would be a filled-in circle next to whatever group the skill was in? Like Explore would be Survival, right?
Waylon Stanmore |
So I am guessing there are no rules for knocking him out to tie him up at this point. Do I have him in a good enough hold that we can gag and bind him now or would that likely give him a chance to escape? Can I just choke him out so he is unconscious and then we can bind him?
Waylon Stanmore |
Have a fun vacation.
Waylon Stanmore |
Hopefully you love the new place.
Recently I have had people calling to try and buy my house. I miss when cellphones were more off limits. :P
Morwenn |
Nice! gratz!
Waylon Stanmore |
My wife and I tried the rental thing for a while. Hopefully it goes well for you. It definitely has some ups and downs. My wife never really cared for it.
GM Tarondor |
We've been renting houses for many years. It's work, but the upside is very clear. We're up to three (soon to be four). I wish I had 20 of them. I think real estate investment is the easiest and most reliable path to wealth in modern America.
It wasn't really that hard to qualify for that first mortgage and to add one every four to five years. It's scary and takes a lot of planning, but qualifying for the mortgage was not hard with two of us working. As the equity builds up in one house it becomes easier to qualify for the next. Then you've got two houses building equity and the third is also easier.
The trick is knowing where rents will be stable and making sure that you consistently take in more than you're going to spend. All that information is available for free online and via a huge number of podcasts.
My only regret is that I waited until I was nearly forty to begin and sort of fell into it. There is no reason I couldn't have begun when I was twenty-five if I had merely sought out the information and the opportunity and not waited for it to fall into my lap.
