Hm... To be an Elf or a Human, both have such nice bonuses. Do I want to have two soils from the get-go or would I rather have all domestic animals...

Also, would The Sapphire Island be the Jungle-type soil or just a tropics one? Or would jungle environments fall under The Great Forests?

So what your saying is that I should change my class to Bard and call myself "The Doctor"?

Or perhaps I should go for a Centurion feel?

Hah, no, if I wanted real "tech" to be a factor in my campaign I'd play Apocalypse World, which has slightly modified rules from DW to accomodate that style. No, it's still sword and sorcery, just with time travel involved. But I would be more than happy to have a Time Lord-esque Bard traveling with the party and Spouting Lore left and right. :)

Kana: That's actually a tough call. I wanted to avoid houseruling but I think this one makes a lot of sense: I'm merging together the Sapphire Islands and the Open Sea, and in the place left by the Open Sea I'm putting in the Dark and Mysterious Jungles. The Sapphire Islands include some minor versions of animals you might find in mainland jungles, but primarily they're tropical in nature.

Oh god, time travel. Time to stock up on aspirin. :P

Also: Sapphire islands? Open Sea?

I think I'm going to continue on with the Fighter though. Maybe if he goes down though. It does sound like this game could be pretty brutal so it's a possibility. However, I have a concept I would like to try out. It would come into play around level 3 or 4 so it will be interesting to see if I make it that far.

Coluber: Druids get a "Bond to the Land" at character creation - elf druids get 2. This bond to the land determines what animals they can shapeshift into, as well as other bonuses. The list of Lands that druids can bond to are:

•The Great Forests (all elf druids get this for free)
•The Whispering Plains
•The Vast Desert
•The Stinking Mire
•The River Delta
•The Depths of the Earth
•The Sapphire Islands and the Open Sea
The Open Sea
•The Towering Mountains
•The Frozen North
•The Blasted Wasteland
*new*
The Dark and Mysterious Jungles

Also: Choose a tell—a physical attribute that marks you as born of the soil—that reflects the spirit of your land. It may be an animal feature like antlers or leopard’s spots or something more general: hair like leaves or eyes of glittering crystal. Your tell remains no matter what shape you take.

So whatever Kana's druid winds up choosing will also affect her very appearance. :)

Those are two of the soils for Druids ^^ They say which animals/environments I'm familiar with for shifting and communication.

Frogfoot: I'll have that Dark and Mysterious Jungles as my soil choice from being a Druid. I'm currently leaning towards Elf, which will grant the Great Forests as well. Because while all those domestic animals from being human sound fun, I have this image forming in my head for this character that the Jungle/Forest combination fits better.

Awesome, Kana, that's good to know. I'll factor that in to my worldbuilding.

I'm looking at a Neutral Human Fighter. A brute of a man who is always looking for a worthy combatant to test his might against.

I think GM Coluber's character, if he is a Barbarian, will be perfect for the "_______ owes me their life, whether they admit it or not." bond.

Excellent, Fremont, I'll begin working on hooks and foils for your character immediately. Glad to hear you're already thinking about bonds. At this rate I can get the gameplay thread up and running by the end of the week, if not sooner! :)

Also excited to hear what your signature weapon will be. Lots of cool enchantments available to you - and if you want the enchant where it glows in the presence of a specific enemy, let me know, and I'll tell you what enemy might make sense in my world.

Yeah, the rest I think I should wait on choosing since I don't know what everyone will be playing yet. I feel a Barbarian just makes sense for that one. Proud and headstrong. Never willing to admit weakness.

I was thinking of just going for a lot of damage, but that actually makes me feel like it would be worth going for an enchant like that. I'll let you know once I get back home later tonight. I have to go take my car in to get some work done, but I have the character sheets to keep me amused while I wait.

If you're uncertain about what the tags mean - awkward, messy, forceful, etc. it's all explained here.

Hey Froggy - pleased to say that I can indeed read/comment to this discussion...

Hey everybody else - I've been playing in Froggy's original campaign from the beginning and I'm pleased to be joining ya'll in a new adventure.

So, I'm thinking a Ranger...maybe connected to the Druid by race/alignment/home...maybe even a cousin that's in awe of his cousin's link to the land but figures she still needs someone to watch her back...of course if you're thinking it's going to be a mostly urban campaign I'd pick something else

Nice to meet you ^^

Aubster, that sounds like a great concept, I love it.

So to sum it up so far we have a Barbarian, Druid, Fighter, and Ranger.

Contemplating my bonds.

Thinking of a cougar named Scat for an animal companion. Scat got his name because when he was a kitten he was always tearing everything he could get his paws on apart so the other elves were always telling him to scat. I think I will go with the Ferocity +2, Cunning +2, 0 Armor, Instinct +1 build. Strengths quick reflexes and keen senses, trained to hunt and fight monsters, weakness is frightening.

Um, you might want to rethink that name. Scat is the professional biologist term for animal excrement.

Oops...maybe Scram instead

Hm, so under gear, is it just one item under each category, like the armor? Also, it said something about picking our names from the list. Is that what we need to do for names?

I'm currently debating between a Good or a Chaotic Elven Druid Born of The Dark and Mysterious Jungles. I'm starting to feel she's more Chaotic because she despises the clearing of land and mass harvesting of trees without care. The invasion of the masses of humanity in a path of destruction.

Oh and Aubuster, I like your idea possibly connecting our characters. ^^

And I've been thinking on the bonds too.

Those names are just suggestions, of course. I'm thinking on ideas involving your characters, and enjoying what I'm coming up with...

-Posted with Wayfinder

And yes, under gear, you have to pick what you start with

-Posted with Wayfinder

My question was more, is it pick only one on those, like armor or a shield, when it doesn't say pick one? That was more what made me unsure about the gear section.

I believe I just like bonds and figuring out what I want my tell to be. I have ideas on that but I haven't settled on anything.

Yeah, your choices are one or the other. Under the gear choices, they are pretty much all binary. It's not totally explicit but that's how I interpret it anyway.

One other thing to note is that you four will have been adventuring together for a month already. This will give you ample space from which to draw interesting backstory interactions - I'm allowing great amounts of creative liberty to be taken with how the previous adventure went down.

I'll give you more details later, but you're all familiar with each other and have faced danger together before - keep that in mind during character creation.

Are you planning to have a bare minium number of players? If so, how many?

I'm honestly feeling pretty good about the 4 we have now. A fifth would not be unwelcome if someone shows interest, but I don't view it as necessary. When you only have 4 players it's easy to keep the campaign moving at a brisk clip, which is my preference.

I should have my fighter set up for you by the end of the day. Likely within the next few hours I think.

Cool man. Excited to see what your signature weapon turns out to be. As for myself, I'm fleshing out the world around you and your motivations for adventuring - including the nature of the event that caused such chaos and destruction in your timeline.

I'm going with a Sinister Looking Axe with Sharp Serrated Edges (+2 Piercing, +1 Damage).

Hawke:

Look:
  • Eyes: Hard Eyes
  • Hair: Wild Hair
  • Skin:Calloused Skin
  • Built Body

Stats:
  • Strength: 16 (+2)
  • Dexterity: 13 (+1)
  • Constitution: 15 (+1)
  • Intelligence: 9 (+0)
  • Wisdom: 12 (+0)
  • Charisma: 8 (-1)

Damage: d10
Armor: 2
HP: 25/25
Alignment: Neutral - Defeat a worthy opponent.
Race: Human - Once per battle you may reroll a single damage roll (yours or someone else's).
Bonds:
  • Barbarian owes me their life, whether they admit it or not.
  • I have sworn to protect Druid.
  • I worry about the ability of Druid to survive in the dungeon.
  • Ranger is soft, but I will make them hard like me.

Starting Moves:
  • Bend Bars, Lift Gates - When you use pure strength to destroy an inanimate obstacle, roll+STR (2). *On a 10+, choose 3. *On a 7-9 choose 2. (*It doesn't take a very long time. *Nothing of value is damage. *It doesn't make an inordinate amount of noise. *You can fix the thing again without a lot of effort)
  • Armored - You ignore the clumsy tag on armor you wear.
  • Signature Weapon - Sinister Looking Axe with Sharp Serrate Edges (2 Weight)

Gear:
  • Dungeon Rations (5 Uses, 1 Weight)
  • Scale Armor (2 Armor, 3 Weight)
  • 2 Healing Potions (0 Weight)
  • 22 Coins

Having traveled with his current entourage for about a month, Hawke has grown attached to each in their own way. With the proud barbarian, he has learned to expect little gratitude, and thusly he gives little in return. Despite this, they both know that in a sticky situation they have each other's back.

He views the ranger as young and untrained. The boy can shoot a bow, but he needs to learn how to swing an axe, or at least a sword, like a real man.

Finally, he sees the druid as a sheltered being. Having been surrounded by the wilderness for so long he doubts she'll make it through a dungeon and thusly he feels the need to protect her. You know, because everyone gets one. Oh Family Guy Spider Man.

I'm just excited about all the animals I have available. I'm almost done, hopefully sometime today I'll have her up for you.

Updated my previous post with my character data and how he potentially views his companions.

Handaxe, battleaxe, or poleaxe? (Hand, Close or Long range?)

•Hand: It’s useful for attacking something within your reach, no further.
•Close: It’s useful for attacking something at arm’s reach plus a foot or two.
•Reach: It’s useful for attacking something that’s several feet away—maybe as far as ten.

For this guy it has to be a Battleaxe and I think close makes the most sense for such a weapon. He needs a bit weapon for what I have planned.

Thanks Kana! I know, having access to ANY ANIMAL of your Land terrain is pretty freakin sweet.

Nice work on your character profile, Hawke. I like it. I'm starting to get a good feel for your character. Proud, experienced, vicious, and maybe a little arrogant. Ready to test his might against any who may cross his path.

For each character, I will devise a question pertaining to your backstory. Answer it as you will, and it will help me to further flesh out the world around you.

Hawke: your career in combat is marked by many, many successes. But there was a failure in your past that haunts you to this day and causes bad dreams from time to time. What was it?

Indeed, while wealth is good, he is more worried about finding a worthy challenge than lining his pockets. Oh and he's not against using others to get what he wants done.

Is a spear for the druid close or reach? The character sheet says close but the rules for a spear say reach.

I'd say that there are spears of multiple varieties, as it's just a stick with a sharp stone or metal shard at the end. Your choice! Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Not rushing anyone through character creation, but if you want to take a look at what I've recorded so far, I've made a gameplay thread here.

Cool. I'm working on a response to your question. I might not get it up until later, but I'm envisioning him having been a rather caring and proud man once upon a time, but the loss of his son (He'll have already lost his wife to childbirth before that) pushed him over the edge into a seemingly uncaring bloke willing to use others. Despite this, he still holds some fondness towards others he gets to know, but his rough demeanor and unwillingness to admit he's cares for anyone tends to prevent others from realizing it.

He'll have lost his son because he brought him on some kind of job and thought he could protect him, but something happened that wound up costing him dearly.

So I'm reading over what you have so far and while I find it would be really cool to play a spellcaster in this game, I also find that it kind of makes sense not to have much dependency on a spellcaster as well. You know, in case if they find themselves in a place where magic does not act normally or at all.

Although, it lends credance to me making a timelor... Clears throat. bard if horrible things should befall my current character. Perhaps he "accidentally" wondered into one of the gates in hopes of finding a great story.

Magic is definitely more chaotic and less controlled in DW than PF in my experience. More possibility for things to not simply fail, but to actively go wrong. Up to you if you want to take that risk in the name of ultimate power. :P

It's all dependent on whether or not my current character should fall. Now let's get back to answering your question...

Hawke's Turning Point wrote:

Hawke was once a caring man who was known throughout the land not only for his prowess with his mighty axe Norn, but for his tendency to go above and beyond for his family and friends. Many wondered how he had maintained such a jolly lifestyle after the loss of his wife, but they need only look to his son to understand that Hawke lived for him.

Having always been confident in his ability to protect those around him, Hawke had decided that he would bring his son along with him as he helped escort a caravan to a nearby city. While he knew such trips could be dangerous, it was only on a rare occasion that anything dire happened.

As they set out on their journey, Hawke took comfort in his choice as he watched his son interact with the various members of the caravan with a smile upon his face. However, that night would quickly make him regret his decision for the rest of his life.

Having drawn second watch in a game of straws, Hawke found himself keeping guard over the group late into the night. It was during this time that the bandits chose to strike.

He had never seen anything like it before. They rose up like wraiths from the ground and struck out with the quickness of vipers. Hawke was lucky to get his axe up in time to block what would have been an otherwise fatal attack. With a shout he tried to rouse the others, but as silence greeted his ears he realized the deed had already been done.

Tears would start to blur his vision as anger and grief overtook his tormented soul. He had already lost so much, but to think he had cost his son his life because of his foolish arrogance was too much to bear. With nothing left to care for, he struck out at the bandits with abandon, feeling one after another while receiving wicked cuts in return.

It was not until he saw the light leave the eyes of the last murderer that he came to his senses to realize just how much strain he had put on his body and of the mortal wound that even know drained the life from his body. Collapsing to the ground, he gave himself over to Death. Let the bastard take him for he had nothing left to live for.

However, a few days later he awoke to be greeted by a dawdling old fool with a look of pity on his face...

Sorry if it's kind of thrown together. I was trying to get an idea of what I had come up with out there for your perusal. I'm thinking the old man is the druid that pulled him into the group about a month ago after having witnessed the destruction he wreaked upon those that took his son from him.

No survivors, huh? Brutal. Poor Hawke. Well written, I can work with that.

I think we could work in a survivor if you want a plot hook. Hawke was not really given the opportunity to look for survivors and by the time he came to, he was no longer near the place it occurred. Grief stricken and sick of the world, Hawke refused to talk about the situation beyond the point of the fact that he felt like he should be dead along with the others in penance for his inability to protect them. Now he finds it difficult to be around others as he often sees those that died that fateful night when he looks upon them. However, despite this fact, some how the old dawdling fool managed to convince him that protecting the world was a better act of penance than letting Death take him.

Yeah, it seems like it would definitely be a fresh mental wound if you recovered from your injuries only to be sent out with the other agents as soon as you were healed.

If that's the case, there must have been difficulties during the past month you've spent with your comrades. How would Hawke cope or not-cope? Would his fellow agents detect any moments of despair, vulnerability, or loose-cannon emotions, perhaps?

Sinathel:

Look: Wild Eyes, Braided Hair, Weathered Hides

Stats:

  • Strength - 15
  • Dexterity - 12
  • Constitution - 13
  • Intelligence - 9
  • Wisdom - 16
  • Charisma - 8

Damage: d6
Armor: 1
HP: 19/19

Alignment: Chaotic - Destroy a symbol of civilization

Race: Elf - The sap of the Elder Trees flows with in you. In addition to any other attunements, the Great Forest is always considered your land.

Bonds:
__________ smells more like prey than a hunter.
The spirits spoke to me of a great danger that follows Hawke.
I have showed __________ a secret rite of the Land.
___________ has tasted my blood and I theirs. We are bound by it.

Studied Essence: When you spend time in contemplation of an animal spirit, you may add its species to those you can assume using shapeshifting.

Starting Moves

  • Born of the Soil: The Dark and Mysterious Jungles, The Great Forests Tell: Vivid green eyes, a shade of green similar to the foliage of the Jungle and just as full of life.
  • By Nature Sustained: You don't need to eat or drink. If a move tells you to mark off a ration just ignore it.
  • Spirit Tongue: The grunts, barks, chirps and calls of the creatures of the wild are as language to you. You can understand any animal native to your land or akin to one whose essence you have studied.
  • Shapeshifter: When you call upon the spirits to change your shape, roll+Wis. ✴On a 10+ hold 3. ✴On a 7–9 hold 2. ✴On a miss hold 1 in addition to whatever the GM says. You may take on the physical form of any species whose essence you have studied or who lives in your land: you and your possessions meld into a perfect copy of the species’ form. You have any innate abilities and weaknesses of the form: claws, wings, gills, breathing water instead of air. You still use your normal stats but some moves may be harder to trigger—a housecat will find it hard to do battle with an ogre. The GM will also tell you one or more moves associated with your new form. Spend 1 hold to make that move. Once you're out of hold, you return to your natural form. At any time, you may spend all your hold and revert to your natural form.

Gear:

  • Token of the Land: Bright and colorful feathers woven into her dark braided hair.
  • Defenses: Hide Armor (1 armor, 1 weight)
  • Armament: Spear (reach, thrown, near, 1 weight)
  • Poultices and herbs

Sinathel's dark hair braided into a long braid that is decorated by bright, colorful feathers woven into it. Her armor and clothing is made from different animal skins, some furs and others scales, some striped and some spotted.

While those that respect her lands are welcome to use its bounty for their needs, she does not tolerate those who are greedy and take more than they need for their own gain. It is people like that whom destroy the habitats of the forests and jungles. She is thus protective, and has in the past lead some of the forest animals in attacks to hinder and stop the destruction.

The spirits have talked to her, told her the danger that follows Hawke. She keeps an eye out, though she has not spoken up about this yet. The spirits did not say what danger follows him, so for now, she watches and waits. Thought this was a fitting one for Hawke.

Waiting till I hear about everyone else before I fill out any more of my boons if that's okay. I have some ideas for them, but I feel I need to know a bit more to make a good choice. I know which one I plan to give the Ranger, but I'd rather wait till I have his name.
