Lyrica is ready to apologize for her armor once again when she realizes that Jak is teasing her as he would so often do. With a lighthearted smile she responds to her peer as follows, "Considering how fast you move with the ladies, Jak, I am sure that you would find any female who takes the time to simply talk as moving too slow for you. Do you even go out with ladies who wear armor?"

Busy day, just time for a response about Message.
As I read it, you can pick 2 people to receive the message and the rest can attempt to overhear the whispered conversation. Given the duration, you could cast it multiple times so everyone is included. However, for a variety of reasons, this tactic either won't work or won't go as far as you'd like. The Message has to follow the open path between caster and target, which means it has to wind through the corridors. With your 120' range, if you are standing at the lever, you'll only reach someone about as far away as the doorway where you destroyed the gnoll zombies. If you could cast in a straight line through rock, you could communicate as far as the water-logged sarcophagi by the boneyard. According to the rules for the spell though, you can't penetrate that much rock.

Marcus easily pulls the sword free of the casket, setting off the... Just kidding. :) He admires the blade, it is finely crafted and shines wondrously.

MW alchemical silver longsword

I say the longsword should go to Lyrica unless she doesn't want it (though im not sure why she would turn down a masterwork blade). If that's the case, then I'll humbly volunteer Jak to carry such a heavy burden. ;P

"You'd be surprised, Lyrica. I like to talk to a lot of girls."

His mind goes back to the problem of the lever, "I don't have any other brilliant ideas about the lever." He nods to Aerik, "If Aerik can move fast, then he may be the right person to pull the lever then just run to catch up. I hate to leave him isolated in here, though."

"Before we go much further, let's take a look at everyone's wounds, make sure everyone's in good shape." Ezekiel begins going over everyone's wounds (Maybe with Aerik's assistance)

Lyrica tends to her own wounds and places her hand on them to try and make them feel better. When suddenly the wound suddenly heals, she stares in amazement.

Lay on Hands on Lyrica: 1d6 ⇒ 2

"Oh my dear Sarenrae, can you really use these hands to heal?!"

"Hold on, Zeke. There is something that I want to try first." She approaches Jak and declares with a smile, "Don't get the wrong idea behind this, Jak Howell." She then pulls back his shirt to inspect the wounds upon his chest.

"Blessed Dawnflower. Let me be a healer as you would have me be. Use these hands to help close the wounds of my companions!" She then gently places her hands on Jak's wounds and uses her Lay on Hands ability.

Lay on Hands on Jak: 1d6 ⇒ 5

The wounds closes. "How does that feel?" She asks.

Lyrica then proceeds to Aerik and tries the same.

"I feel the Everlight within me! May I see your wounds?"

Lyrica then gently lays her hands upon Aerik's wounds to heal them.

Lay on Hands on Aerik: 1d6 ⇒ 3

"I hope that feels better, Aerik!"

"Yes, it is working!" She declares with unbridled enthusiasm.

Moving over to Marcus, she tries it once again.

Lay on Hands on Marcus: 1d6 ⇒ 5

"I hope this helps, my friend!"

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

It's an interesting question as to whether your Lay on Hands would work without a caster level check. The Vargouille's poison prevents magical healing without a high check. However, Lay on Hands is a Supernatural not Spell-like ability, so I'm inclined to assume it works.

Lo, the power of Sarenrae is made manifest...

Also, unless you abort the plan, I'll need a couple of Heal rolls from Aerik to go with Ez's AAs. Ez, I'll change your second AA to Lyrica since Marcus is healed.

Oh and Lyrica... your alignment is in jeopardy since CLEARLY you were using Lay on Hands as an excuse to touch Jak. Your denials are a tissue of lies. As we all know, you are playing Leia to his Han Solo. :P

I don't know that this is reasonable. Clearly even Saraenrae would take the opportunity to lay hands on Jak if given the opportunity. Seems inappropriate to dock a pally for doing what her goddess would also do. :D

Jak's surprise blasts any quip he may have made from his mind as he presses his hand to freshly-knitted skin at chest and neck. "Black Mist but that's a good trick, Lyrica! You've been holding out on us."

He hops down from the sarcophagus with more life than he'd displayed moments before. "Marcus, you mind if I take a looksie at that blade?"

If Marcus hands it over, Jak runs magic tendrils along the length of the blade (Detect Magic) as he looks at the silver weapon's detailing, swinging it a few times in practiced manner... testing its weight.

Appraise (for its value) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

"This is a nice blade. Unless someone else can put it to better use, I'd love to see what it can do against whatever else we run into down here." He reverses the blade, offering it to the group to see if anyone else wants to carry it. If they don't accept,he flips it back into a proper grip, striking a dashing pose. "It make me look the hero?"

Aerik feels the light of Sarenrae wash over him, soothing his wounds. With a half smile, he looks over Lyrica.

"Thank you. Hopefully I can return the favor, if moss and mud can serve instead of the sun's healing fire."

Aerik tends to Lyrica's wounds the "old fashioned" way. ;)

TDW Heal on Lyrica, No healer's kit: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 8 - 2 = 21

While he is doing so, Aerik hears Jak pipe in.

"That blade looks good in your hand. Best put it to good use. You all go and ready yourselves for battle in front of the stone. I'll join you after I throw the lever. Just try not to finish that creature off before I get to join in."

Assuming everyone is on board with the plan and begins filing out, Aerik puts his hand on Marcus' shoulder as the others leave.

"Whatever happens to me...You make sure my mother is released. Promise me."

I don't like the plan, but I can come up with nothing better.

As he files out, new blade held ready, Jak turns back. "Aerik. Thanks. And if something finds you once you throw the lever, don't be a hero... get back to us."

EDIT: Actually, it occurs to me you have no way of knowing when to throw the lever. I'd suggest you walk back with us, then back-track once we're there and throw the lever once you know first-hand that we're all in place. It'll take way longer, but it'sthe best I can come up with.

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

OK, so I take it the plan is for everyone to set up outside the Fountain Room. Once set, Aerik will head back to the lever and throw it, then run back towards the presumed battlezone. Is that correct?

Aerik wrote:

"We will do our best, but be sure to take care of yourself, Aerk!" Lyrica reaches over and kisses the man on his cheek. "You better come back safely!"

Lyrica leads her companions through the barrows with her scimitar drawn and her shield held tightly. When they reach outside of the fountain room, Lyrica will move to N57 and stand with scimitar drawn and shield ready to await what happens.

On the walk to the room, but before getting there, Jak whispers to the group. "I've been thinking about the what we're about to do. If he's in there, and if we're going to have to fight him, we'll need every advantage. There were some sarcophaguses along the wall on the right if you're facing the stone blocking the well room that he Forgotten's in." Jak pauses to mentally arrange the room in his mind. "If I can manage it, I'd like to sneak in behind you two, and use the cover of those sarcophaguses to get into the corner and hide from him."

He looks at Marcus and Lyrica, "If you two can wait back in the room, forcing him to come to us. I don't think we want to fight him in the doorway, anyway. if you can lure him out, I can dive in behind him and box him in." (providing flanking for both Lyrica and Marcus)

"Who knows? I may even be able to whack him a good one once or twice from back there. What do you guys think?"

If they're in general agreement, and this would have to be decided before they entered the room, obviously…

When the group nears the room, Jak falls silent. He nervously bounces his new sword while he hands his torch to Zeke, continuing forward in silence. When they round the final corner, Jak ducks down behind the forms of Marcus and Lyrica, using their noise and size to keep himself out of the eyeline of the creature if it' watching through the cracks. Then he quietly scampers from sarcophagus to sarcophagus, coming to a quiet, squatting position in the dark corner, weapon ready.

When he is healed from Lyrica's touch the big man starts, then nods in thanks to the paladin. His face betrays his thoughts of surprise but respect for her goddess.

I agree that Aerik should wait until we're in place, high tail it over to the lever, throw it, and then run back. The big danger is that if the lever doesn't move the rock, Aerik could be in big trouble. But I don't want the Forgotten just fleeing the barrow while we're walking to him, so it's a tough call.

Ah, if only Jak had answered his question about where you guys hailed from - fun times. Still, the geography hasn't changed much since he was imprisoned and people usually start in the lowlands and work their way up. Heading 'downhill' would put him on almost a direct line for Dies Drear.

Run speed is 4x unless you have the Run feat. I'll get things rolling once Ez has had a chance to post his location.

N56. Might as well do it all in a line badass style. Also how tall is the Barrow? Considering offering Lyrica or Jak an Enlarge Person infusion.

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

It's a groin vaulted room, about 25-ish feet at the apex. The doorway into the Fountain Room is no more than 10' tall. If you want to pass out the Enlarge, we'll say it happened before this post and presumably so was the act of drinking it. If so, I need to know who drank it and the new grid refs for all affected characters.

Plans and preparations complete, Aerik accompanies the team to the entrance of the Forgotten's lair before he vanishes back into the Boneyard towards his appointed place at the lever. The rest of our heroes stride boldy into the vaulted Crypt before the Fountain Room. The black obelisk of a door awaits as Ezekiel, Marcus, and Lyrica take their positions before it. Jak does his best to creep along the wall, navigating the uneven terrain of the sarcophagi in as much silence as possible.

Marcus Only:
You catch a brief sound of movement, a swish of fabric maybe, in the Fountain Room below the bubbling sound of the fountain itself. Clearly someone is in there.

Time ticks away as our heroes hear only the sound of their breathing and the fountain's murmuring. More than a minute passes, then an eldritch, wolf-like, howl echo down the corridors...

~ At Fate's Lever ~

Aerik stands in the dark by the still-smoking sarcophagus, his feeble light holding back the shadows. All around him the inky darkness swirls. The only spot of brilliance is the glint off the lever in the wall. As ready as he can be, he lets out a howl and drags the heavy, cold lever downward before taking off at a sprint. He rounds the first bend, pushing towards the destroyed gnolls and walls decorated with his own blood. He feels a shudder in the rock below his feet. Somewhere beneath the Barrow, stone slides against stone. Gears shake the dust from their joints and rumble to life. Metal drags across stone in a shrieking serenade.

~ At the Lair ~

The Howl fades and is quickly followed by a shriek of metal. A tremor passes through the crypt as stone rides roughly against stone. Amid thin wisps of swirling dust, the black obelisk shudders for a moment then descends into the floor until its top rests flush with the floor. The doorway stands open like a gaping maw.

Initiative rolls, please.

Enlarge should probably go to one of our heavy hitters. Assuming Lyrica uses Smite, she could offset the AC penalty from being big, and get some decent damage output bonuses. Marcus would benefit similarly, but I don' tknow that he has a way of off-setting the AC penalties from Enlargement.

Being a bit softer than either of those two, I don't think Jak's a good person to get it.

On the Smite Question:
Sorry, you can't pre-emptively Smite for a couple of reasons. First, according to the definition of smite "...the paladin chooses one target within sight to smite." Since you aren't eyes on the Forgotten, you are out of luck. Second, my policy is to freeze all character actions once initiative is rolled unless I'm asking for the roll well in advance of the encounter. Basically, once you roll, you are committed and cannot amend your actions. This prevents a lot of last minute "Oh, I just thought of this" stuff that doesn't crop up much at a table but does happen in PbPs due to the lag time it takes for all rolls to be posted. You can, of course, Smite as your swift action when your turn comes up.

The screech of metal sets more than the obelisk in motion... Aerik sprints around the corner and into the East-West passage. He moves so fast, his light can scarcely keep pace as he whips through the darkness. He heads for the southern turn that will lead him to the mushroom gallery... and finds that he isn't the only thing moving fast in the dark corridors. And this one doesn't need light to see. Another thick-boned and long-skulled, fully armored, skeletal hyena stands in the junction. A 10' metal leash drags behind it from the northern passage. It snaps its jaws as it spies the Druid.

Aerik, you've used 70' of your 200' movement. You can either continue running past the beastie (and draw the AoO with an AC ding for running) OR stop short - at a spot of your choosing between your current position and 'Fluffy'. Since you didn't see Fluffy until you were well past 50', you can't abort the run and turn it into a single move + X action. So it will either be:
1. A double-move and stop short
2. Continue the Run.
In other words, you won't get another action this round. Since you committed to a full-tilt run, you can't turn around and run in the reverse direction. What do you want to do?

Ezekiel downs the admixture in a single gulp as more than one set of eyes regards the lowering obelisk. From the Fountain Room, flat red eyes shift slightly as the doorway - after hundreds of years - finally stands open, promising freedom from torment and the incessant bubbling of the accursed font.

Its senses honed to know every sound of the Barrow, the Forgotten is well aware who awaits... minus one. Initially, it had thought to enjoy a deadly game of cat-n-mouse through the Barrow. Then it had savored the idea of lurking like a spider in the Fountain Room until one or more of the heroes chose to test their mettle and paid the price. Sadly, the adventurers were more cautious and more clever. But their plan had one weak point and gave the Forgotten a temporary advantage... Someone had to throw the lever. Four-on-one is better than five. Waiting is to my disadvantage.

A lanky black figure, like a 9' spider, drops silently from above the doorway in a swirl of rotting robes. Time to play... The button eyes glance at each person in turn, ticking off its adversaries. The Forgotten says playfully, "Why where are Aerik and Jak Howell? One slunk in here rather credibly and the other is likely dying at the other end of the Barrow."

Not waiting for an answer, the Forgotten stretches forth a long arm and lays a stretched black hand on the ranger's shoulder - as if greeting an old friend. Marcus gasps as the light touch sucks the heat from his body, freezes the marrow in his bones, and makes his shoulder-blade feel like it has shattered from the sudden cold.

As the hand retracts carrying away a good portion of the Ranger's life-force, the Forgotten looks on the Paladin and smiles with the small cadaverous portion of its face not consumed by shadow. "You're taller than I recall."

(hp 38/38, AC 17, T 11, FF 11, Initiative +1, Perception +5, Fort +8, Ref +6, Will +10)

Oops! Thanks for keeping me straight, Aerik. At least it wasn't an arithmetic error! Well, here is the d8 instead of the d6 for being enlarged.

Enlarged Damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 (+4 Str, +2 Smite Evil, +2 First Strike of Smite Evil)

Nice! Even with bigger dice, I am still rolling ones.

Sorry for the wait... Easter weekend and all.

Jak continues crouching in the corner, drawing out his whip as he waits for an opportunity to be useful.

Marcus recoils from the creature's icy touch, dropping Beula with a curse and drawing a smaller throwing axe, hurling it at the Forgotten's head.

5ft move to M59.

Free: Drop Beula

Standard, throw axe, one range increment. 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 - 2 = 7

Damage, whetstone 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

Lyrica and Jak prepare to strike the monster. Marcus pulls his axe and looks for an avenue to distance himself from the frosty grip of the beast.

Marcus, trying to climb onto the sarcophagus at M59 as a 5' move will require an acrobatics roll. Do you still want to try it?

Whoops, didn't realize I'd have to climb onto that. Can I instead just withdraw to L56 (I think that's it--two squares north of Zeke)? I wanted to safely move away from the Forgotten's reach, but it doesn't look like I can do that without withdrawing. I'll still keep my 5 roll for my next attack to be fair. Is that ok?
