Of Kings and Commoners - Kingmaker AP

Game Master RPGGGM

With the heart of the Stolen Lands explored and the bandits who ruled there scattered, the long-contested realm finally lies open for pioneers and settlers to stake their claims.:
Amid the rush of opportunistic travelers, the PCs find themselves stewards over a new domain, tasked with the responsibility of guiding and guarding a fledgling nation struggling to grow upon a treacherous borderland. Yet the threats to this new nation quickly prove themselves greater than mere bandits and wild beasts, as the monstrous natives of the hills and forests rampage forth to slaughter all who have trespassed upon their territory. Can the PCs hold the land they’ve fought so hard to explore and tame? Or will their legend be just one more lost to the fangs of the Stolen Lands?

Also on the topic of illegal potions - I'm sure there's See Invisible potions floating around in some ap somewhere. I know for sure there's shield ones at the very least!

And there's always Elixirs. Which are not potions but almost :P

(And if Bokken has those around then he most likely has some Craft Wondrous Item materials around - even if there is probably heavy overlap between potion and elixir ingredients.)

I don't want things I didn't earn. If GGGM intended to create a custom rule-breaking elixir then that's fine, but he didn't.

You make that sound like something bad.

He wanted us to have easy access to see invisibility because it's great utility but for niche cases. What's not to like?
Plus, with infusions, there's precedents.
FAQ wrote:

Can I use the infusion discovery to create an infused extract of a personal-range formula (such as true strike), which someone else can drink?

Yes, you can. The design team may decide to close this loophole in the next printing of the Advanced Player’s Guide.

What do you know, maybe Bokken is an Alchemist and those are, actually, "See Invisibility"(on Alchemist Formulae List) Infusions - in Preserving Flasks...which is why he is so keen on getting the bottles back? :)

It's fully legit afaik.

Nevermind that it's unintended, but seriously, as long as the players don't get to abuse it, and it's entirely within the power of the GM, then there's nothing wrong with it. The GM, after all, is fully within his right to adapt things to fit the narrative.
Especially if access to the spell is just a scroll and a point or two in UMD away, anyway. I mean, UMD is a way powerful skill by itself, it doesn't get diminished in the slightest by allowing a select few spells to be accessed in a different manner.

I pointed out that such potions were not normally allowed. If GGGM wanted to make an exception he could have.

We already know that Bokken is an adept.

And I can cast glitterdust.

Wait a minute!

We missed something important. GM accidentally spilled that Bokken does indeed have See Invisible scrolls.

This means that we could very well purchase those scrolls right?

So we can indeed get some See Invisibility action if we want.

Also!

If any of us could cast that spell Illthir can scribe scrolls.

Now See Invisibility is a bit awkward in that that it's a 3rd level Bard spell, not on the cleric or oracle list and I'm not sure Numalar wants to spend a precious slot on it. So maybe Scarlet :P?

Glitterdust scrolls however would be much easier, not to mention we have several people that can actually cast them without resorting to Use Magic Device.

How do people feel about that option?

I'm going for 'fierce' here people--fierce! | The Trading Post | Tactical Map | Region |

Numalar, while it is difficult for perfectionists like ourselves to let a loose thread (or tripwire) lie, you have to realize by now that Alia is secretly a polymorphed troll, and trolls can turn anything into dinner an argument. ;)

Exhibit A: Note how well she gets on with others of her former species.

Bokken (in this game at least) is for the record is an old, human, multi-class wizard-adept. He doesn't have Craft Wondrous (that would have stepped on a lot of PCs' (both here an in my home game's--toes) I had thought about the elixir route after I had made my mistake (and way before that the idea of making him an alchemist) but that's not really in the flavor of Akiro, the wizard, the character I am basing him on from the original Conan movies, played by the awesome Mako Iwamatsu. He does have scrolls for some of his spells but usually he keeps those to himself because the ink and paper is so dang expensive, and being a hermit he hates going to the mall you guys are probably going to build at some point.

Anyhow would now be a good time to make with the presents? I actually have no idea if any of you follow the Capitalist faith. But here in that states we have this thing that is similar to the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, it is called Black Friday. It is the day that retailers celebrate something called 'Going into the Black', which sounds kinda creepy right? But we are coming up on that time of year when presents are given and GM report cards are due (conveniently enough) and I was thinking to myself, what could I do to get an A+? So presents! There's still time to shake the box and guess whether it's socks or another tiny drone to crash.

Nope, I don't need to make everything into an Argument. Also, it takes 2 to argue. I simply provided an example of a legit See-Invisibility-Potion.

But if you want to go there: Windy Escape is also usually only for Sylphs, yet you adapted it into some Draconic variant. Who says there's only "personal"-range See Invisibility spells? They could have been altered to "Target touched".

All I meant to say was that if that was provided as loot, it seemed a decend idea to GM at the time, either because we might need it, or because it could be useful, or because he just randomly picked something that seemed available.
And that it surprised me that you would start rules-lawyering and pointing out they are illegal, rather than just go with the flow and take them. They would be hardly game-breaking.

The intent of speaking up was mostly to state that I don't care about such minor mistakes, and would have preferred the original reward. By transmitting that, I hoped that maybe you would have shared the preference and would have reflected on the necessity to point out such minor transgressions.
Also, if RPGGGM was willing to give them to us as quest reward, we earned them, so not wanting things we did not earn seemed like a non-argument.
Additionally, I think that was the first time I met Bokken? Did we come to him at some time after I and Scarlet joined?

Sorry if that all comes across as troll-ey :/

@Celebration of the Capitalist Faith

Actually, I'm a Discordian(I thought that was obvious *grin*). But regardless of personal faith, Black Friday kind of spilled over to Europe, much like Halloween. Both much tamer/less extreme, but still, it's 'known'.
While I may be justified in being happy that there's no player report cards, I can gladly state that I'd happily give you an A+ on a report card any day - this campaign is one of the most immersive ones I ever got to play with no complaints worth mentioning whatsoever.(e.g. a lack of downtime to do proper crafting is kind of a non-complaint.)

So, shaking the Box, I can't help but be curious - I feel I may be able to interpret one or two of those, but I've never been good enough at that to dare guess.
That said, I was never happy about those socks, but then...lets say despite not being worn, they can have sentimental value after some while, when the technological gimmick has long outlived it's usefulness - so either seems good. :)

Yeah. It's quite nice though, lots of webstores have discounts. And there's less crowd :P

Now over to wild guesses and speculation!

@Present!:
Redhead might be the Mad King. Or maybe a Redcap - it's the season after all :P

Or Scarlet - but I'm not sure if she is that short? But that would make all the characters represented.

There's also a piece of Zokon and Celynes character art.

Snowcaster heritage feels like someone I know ...

Also a sword that might be an estoc.

Big Dog. We know exactly one dog right? And he is sorta big-ish.

There's mites. And Kressle.

The Hall of Mirrors is a part of a palace in Versailles. Which interestingly was commissioned by Louis XIV, the Sun King, and there's a crescent moon there too.

Not sure what to make of the blue thing top right nor the small yellow rectangle. Not the stone circle either ... unless it is some sort of fairy circle?

Now I'm going to take a wild guess and say that there is some sort of party picture. This would maybe be the layout map or image board?

Explains why most of the party is there (missing kittens). Explains why there is plenty of handmade sketches. Also why new person (Illthir) would be represented with text instead of picture - late addition since drawing probably already began.

I played in a longstanding 3.5 game where the party wizard was based on Akiro from Conan. Only he was named "Subutai" instead, which was a different character from Conan.

In the Conan films, I don't think Akiro was ever addressed by name.

Canadian stores don't do Black Friday like American ones do (mainly because we celebrate Thanksgiving in October), though there is a bit of spillover. Now that online sellers like Amazon dominate the market though you do see more of that here.

HAPPY EARLY (or LATE) HOLIDAYS!

So, as guessed--character art! Though I went with more than one piece, it was either that or Illthir would have looked a bit like a male gnome with topknot and about 30 pounds of caltrops. ;) And if you don't think yours looks right then you really should have given more thought to writing up a description of what your character looks like. I mean, I think we got the important stuff thick eyebrows, big hat, tiger-shaped handbag, and so on, but there's time yet to write up a nice description for next year. (I figure I might be able to increase the art budget every year until I can get Wayne Reynolds to paint the characters in about 2040). Most of these are non-spoilery (although Numalar's is very spoilery--you'll never guess what he's got under that hat!) but go ahead and look anyhow. I figure we are all professional enough gamers to be able to keep player and character knowledge separate.

The artist this time out had a style sort of reminiscent of children's story books (a sort of ongoing sub-theme in Kingmaker) and one of my favorite books growing up--D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths (1, 2, 3). You can find more art from the same artist at: https://redlyjester.deviantart.com.

But for now, enjoy a year-end trip down memory lane with some old (and new) friends.

Yep, is why I bring it up :)
I mean, the Scholar could travel through such cozy hamlets, maybe celebrate the birthday of a old friend with some fireworks and halfling pipe-weed...
Walker sees him and instantly knows he's a good person!
Then spends 3 weeks looking for him because he is fooled by a silly disguise - while we slowly die in whatever situation we ended up in needing help.
Good plan! :)

Also, let me guess....Vega knows:
Attack(humanoids, monstrous humanoids, giants, or other animals)
Attack(everything)
Demolish(everything in his way)
Hunt(and return dead mice and decapitated birds as a sign of affection threat)
Mark Territory(extensively doing that without even being commanded to)
Menace(because terrified prey tastes way better)

More specifically, IC, Illthir is looking to see if there is any drinks that would benefit from a slight enhancement. She has the Tears to Wine spell which makes average wine or mead out of stuff. But since it only lasts 40 min she'll need to make sure everything is prepped and she can maintain a good rotation trough the night. Preferably also interspaced with real drinks!

Oh and if she is in the kitchen planning things she can also use Gallant Inspiration if someone is looking to screw up their dish!

Now that I mentioned it, yeah the Any-Tool might come in handy when cooking : )

(Maybe that was what our great green overlord wanted to hint at?)

Just an FYI guys:

Holiday Plans:

This Friday (i.e. tomorrow), Saturday, Sunday, and Monday I have Christmas events to attend (and I may be busy Tuesday too). I will be travelling for some of that period. I still expect to have internet access and I'll try to get online in that period but my posting frequency may suffer. Wednesday night I will be back home and things will return to normal for me.

Thanks for the heads up.

Today (Friday) is probably my busiest day until the new year begins. But I will probably be able to sneak in early and way late

I have a feeling the ambassadors enjoy at least parts of their jobs. And that we might have to move them around in wheelbarrows tomorrow. Ah I guess its the season at least :P

Sorry for my absence the last few week or so... Holidays and guests and family stuff, and seasonal depression have taken their toll... will be slowly catching up on all my games today...

Don't be depressed, you have a growing tiger to care for. That and the days are getting longer again (unless you live someplace with a native marsupial population), so more serotonin. :)

Huh? We here have the native marsupial population in multiple forms (Superorder Australidelphia) and it's the middle of summer and the days are quite long, generally not getting dark til 7.30pm at night

Unless your referring to the fact that it seems to have settled at the time and is no longer getting darker later?

Yep. We are at the turning of the seasons.

I have found that a quick walk outside at lunch helps, if possible. Even if there's overcast. Just to glimpse the sun for real.

Maybe it works for you too :-)
