Jamir smiles faintly as he reads Haltani's note. Unbelievable, except that I am certain it is true. The winter witches of Irrisen always have something brewing in their cauldrons.

"Well met, friend Mythryndyr," the halfling says with a bow. "I am Jamir Montajay, of the Cassomir Montajays, and my primary skills are stabbing our adversaries and talking our way out of trouble. Or into trouble, depending on the mission."

Craggark wrote:
Craggark laughs at Myth’s words. ”Oh, I was just irked by Jamir’s description of my skill set, really.” He turns to Jamir and says with mock pendaticism: ”There are some that would say that I am a skilled diplomat.”

"Is that what you call it, my friend? Diplomacy? How interesting! Of course, you're the party diplomat. I shall remember that the next time I wish to subtly inform a stranger in hostile territory that he is badly outmatched as well as outnumbered. 'Yes, here is our wizard, our bomber, our scimitar-swinging priest, and most terrifying of all, our DIPLOMAT! Run away!"

The halfling chuckles at the idea. As Jawhar begins preparing his coffee, Jamir sidles up to Mythryndyr.

"Be careful if he offers you any of that bitter Qadiran sludge. It's warm enough for a winter drink, but I swear there is hardly any alcohol in it at all!"

As he hears Craggark inserting his foot deeply into his own mouth, Jamir positions himself carefully, so that Mythryndyr is between him and Craggark in a line with Lia on the far end, just in case she decides to set fire to something more than a rented bedsheet. He catches Torvald’s eye and motions the dwarf to take a few steps back.

"So, about our current mission... what are your thoughts on it Myth?"

Jawhar laughs loudly.

"Quite right, My Lady Speaker. Let us not dwell on the divine miracle of Craggark actually doing work in the morning.

Yes, let's discuss the quest."

Finishing his small plate of food, Jawhar pours himself another cup of coffee and holds the pot out for others who need a refill.

Leaning forward dramatically and peering intently at Mythryndyr.

"The mystery of The Dawnflower's will has been made known to us. Months of constant torturous cold, betrayal, evil witches, goblins at every turn, and even.... a DRAGON!

Forced to carry a heavy burden from country to country in search of the legendary lost historian of the Society, we finally found him being tortured in the basement of a Shadowlodge facility. While Jamir and I lay insensate and helpless at the bottom of a fiendish pit trap, Craggark here almost single-handedly cleared the Shadowlodge of all defenders with Lia's magics and Torvald's bombs harrying them from the flanks.

With the historian and many other slaves freed, we set in to lick our wounds. That is when Sarenrae cleared the veils of wisdom and showed the Historian the path to the fabled holy relic that will be our quest."

Jawhar looks around, casting his eyes to see if any Shadowlodge agents may have sneaked up behind him, then casts his voice low.

"Jadrek's Shard, a flaming axe of great reknown in these lands. Hidden in the Keep of the Huscarl King, and then lost to time.

The Shadowlodge identified this relic as an opportunity to boost their own standing and to embarrass the Society. But, you see... they are digging in the wrong place!

Using the Headpiece of the Staff of Ra research materials that we carried for weeks, the Historian was able to draw us a map that will lead us directly to the Keep, where we will rescue this holy weapon and assure it does not fall into the hands of the Shadow Lodge."

Jawhar pauses, and leans back.

"So, are you in? Do you have what it takes to serve a Goddess's call?"

The Ulfen have a saying: “No blade is as sharp, no demon as cruel as the winds that walk their way down the Icestair.” At the border of Irrisen and the untamed wilds of the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, the meaning of those words becomes clear as the barren, snow-covered plains stretch to the horizon. Four days’ travel now lies between the eastern edge of Irrisen and the shattered remains of the Huscarl King’s keep. To the east, sinuous snow drifts give way to rocky foothills from which pines and scrub brushes claw for life. In the distance, the massive creatures that give this land its name shuffle along at a ponderous speed, still impossibly huge even from far away.

Skagni’s map marks a clear and straightforward path, but the snow makes for slow travel. The Shadow Lodge agents have a head start, but persistence through the harsh environment and adherence to the strict map may yet make it possible to catch them before they reach the Keep of the Huscarl King and gain access to the mighty weapon held within.

Let's make knowledge local and History checks (without taking '10') for everybody (even those untrained). Also since it's the first day, let's have survival checks (resist cold weather) for today's hike from everybody as well. Also you'll need to let me know if you "force March" and you'll need to make the appropriate con. rolls+ an additional Fort sav vs. cold (second Fort. Save is DC:16 instead of DC:15)

I'm assuming that I still get a +2 to Knowledge Local checks based on my background? If not, then, subtract 2 from my skill checks. Aren't we using Endure Elements from the wand?

Survival: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15

no u aren’t using endure elements, it reserved for particularly cold weather. ( you only have 36 charges) Jawhar and I had a lengthy back and forth on the discussion thread about the topic of when he wants to spam endure elements. Suggest you refer to that, and consult with Jawhar if you think changes need to be made. Also you all need to remember to add any bonuses that are not cold weather gear related to your fort save when you are called on to make it. ( you mentioned you have a +4 racial bonus for instance Craggark) also you may all make survival checks like craggark to give yourself an extra +2 bonus to the save. For fun I will roll craggark’s save now to show you how the bonuses stack ( he can reroll if I don’t make it )

Regarding background yes u get the + 2 if it’s related to the north you may also make a knowledge history check untrained

You can only make the survival check if you are moving half speed. I don't think we want to slow down to 10ft speed for overland... If the wand runs out, I think we will be doing this at the end of the march, but probably don't want to do it yet. We can take care of frost bite, etc at the end of the day.

I'll include a Survival check anyways, but my objection above stands

Lia is casting Endure Elements from her own list each day on herself. She learned from the last excursion and her chilled bones, to always use it in this area, even if it is far warmer than where she is from. I also just put in the discussion tab that realistically speaking, since this is a round trip, Lia should/would have picked up a wand of endure elements for 2 Prestige. If it's to late for that np though and I will cross it off.

Discussion thread everyone, please. STAT.

male Snows of Summer

I'll let you all hash it out on the discussion thread as to how you'll handle the cold. As for today everyone except Jawhar Myth and Craggark passed(I'll roll for Torvald). I won't include the survival rolls because I know you don't want to half your speed.(most likely how you'll gain ground on your adversaries)
Fyi at the end of your 5th day your 118 miles from your destination The keep of the Huscarl King

You have another productive day trudging through the Tundra. However Both Jawhar, Jamir, and Torvald are feeling a bit more worn and chilly than the others. After camp is set up they all, decide to take an hour to rest and recover in the tents before going on to their other task. Jawhar channels once they are warm channel: 1d6 ⇒ 2 and then again to fully recover. After an hour they all feel alright and join the others in the larger tent for an evening meal and conference.

The topic soon turns to your mission and ultimate goal. Everyone shares a bit of what they know about the area and what Skagni taught them about the Prize they are going after. Analia is particularly a fountain of information when she produces provides translations to some of the more commonly used symbols and motifs among the Snowmask Clan. The make-shift scroll is scrawled onto the inner side of a long strip of mammoth pelt. She explains that it was a gift from one of the handlers that smuggled them out of Irrisen.

What topics you went over:
An Ulfen warrior once carved out a small
“kingdom” for himself in the western regions of the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, earning loyalty from local Kellid tribes. The Ulfen warrior Ranulf was known as the Huscarl King, as he had once served as one of the Emperor of Taldor’s personal guards. After he established his keep, it was attacked by a powerful white dragon who the Huscarl defeated in a battle so fierce that legends claim Ranulf ’s beard was frozen during the fight. Despite ruling for almost 30 years after the battle, Ranulf died with no heir.

Ranulf was known for his flaming greataxe, Jedrek’s Shard. Rumors persist that it was buried with him at his death when his Kellid followers caused an avalanche to cover the keep under a mountain of ice, rock, and snow, but the retreat of a glacier has now made the tomb accessible again for those brave enough to venture through Snowmask territory.

The denizens of the Realm of the Mammoth lords are Kellids, considered primitive by many in the InnerSea, but respected for their hardiness.Your route goes through the domain of a Kellid tribe called the Snowmask Clan. Unlike many of the other migratory Kellid tribes, this clan has never abandoned its territory. The Kellids of the Snowmask Clan are cunning
warriors, favoring ambush whenever possible. Their familiarity with the region allows them to use terrain and natural features to their advantage.
Among the Kellid tribes of the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, the Snowmask Clan is known for members’ appreciation of great stories. One of their hospitality rituals is sharing tales with any who would be their guests. Failing to participate in this custom is a grave offense. Additionally, they rely on cave paintings to record the history of their tribe.

After your evening meal it's time to clean up, bring the donkey in, and begin guard duty. Jamir and Analia take first watch.
Jamir fort cold: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 5 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 2 + 5 + 3 = 16DC:15

Jamir fort cold: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 5 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 4 + 2 + 5 + 3 = 21DC:17

Jamir again endures guard duty with little trouble and heads off to bed. Analia with her magic is more than adequately protected so she moves to wak up Myth and Jawhar when her guard duty is up.

Jawhar does fine on his guard duty but Myth finds the experience more un-pleasant. Jawhar channels twice more to help Myth recover. channel: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4 Lastly it's Torvald and Craggark's turn at guard duty.

Torvald fort cold: 1d20 + 5 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 5 + 4 = 29DC:18
Torvald non lethal cold: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Come morning everyone is fine but Myth and Torvald are a little numb from last night's guard duty. (remember Myth also healed 3hp for resting, so he's only has -3hp non-lethal as does Torvald) Jawhar could channel to get rid of it or wait. your choice.

male Snows of Summer

OK cold weather stuff settled.
Your journey is tough but, you're making steady progress. On the seventh day of your journey there's even a bit of a heat wave as temperatures rise in to the mid forties during the day and drop to just below freezing at night. The heat melts the snow off the tops, of a lot of low bushes. You also, learn to stay clear of fir tree's branches, as vibrations from your party passing beneath, often mean a great deal of snow being dropped on you.

About the middle of the 9th day the snow begins to thicken again. Not because recent snowfall but, because you feel you are gradually increasing your elevation relative to sea level. Sometime after mid-day the thick cluster of pine trees you were ends abruptly at the top of a
low hill. At the bottom, the snow is littered with the aftermath of battle. Broken shields and spears jut from the snow like fractured bones, and blood colors the ground around a sprawl of bodies, many still seemingly locked in combat.

As soon as Craggark answers her, Lia herself starts off toward the bodies for inspection, completely ignoring her own advice.

"Oohh! Look at these weapons! And look at this armor! The pattern in the snow does indicate a direction, but a dragon breathing away from the dead and not toward them? I think your first guess is the more likely answer. Perhaps even several ice spells. I wonder who they were?"

As she picks her way through the bodies, she counts up the different warriors, and tries to make heads or tails of the different sides. Were there two different sides to this battle, or even three or more? I wonder...

As if suddenly realizing something, she takes out and activates her wand of mage armor.

The battle field is a spectacle of gore I moved Craggark closer to the battlefield (double move 3/4 speed = 9 squares) and did the same for Myth as the both indicated they wanted to move. Jawhar and Torvald stay with Murphy a.k.a "Donkey"

As Craggark draws closer he can see that this battle was recent. Tell tell heat, still rises from at least one of the piles of bodies. Analia and Jamir are close enough to realize this battle was fought between two distinct groups. One appeared to be a local tribe of Kellids while the others came from more civilized lands. Before the investigation of the battle sight can go any further however, the entire is alerted by a low whistle from Myth.

Myth:
Myth as you circle south you keep your eye on the battlefield but also on the surrounding area. At first you see and hear nothing and that bothers you. Your not much of a woodsmen but, you know with the recent "heat wave" some small birds have already started nesting and you've witnessed both tree squirrels and snow rabbits in abundance on your trek through these lands. But, this copse of trees is dead silent. At first you think it's because of the recent battle that took place. But, you quickly dismiss the idea..whatever happened here happened a day or more ago..and the forest would have returned to life almost as soon as battle ceased. No something else was going on..like.....like there was something still threatening the wildlife in the area ..something like a predator.

You hear it before you see it a rhythmic crunching of the snow accompanied by a fierce high pitched growl ..You strain your eyes and then you see it..A massive beast the size of a horse and twice as large..with beady eyes and claws like a badger. It's trotting toward the battlefield drawn by blood. It lifts it's nose to the wind and catches some kind of scent from your direction. It starts moving again. It's only 8oft away but numerous small trees prevent a clean shot. Myth you may shoot at the creature which is off map to the south. It has cover relative to you currently, and is moving quickly through the forest, in your group's general direction.

Everyone can roll their own initiative and act. All the rest of you know is that Myth has alerted you to an approaching threat to the south.

Yes but you have:

snowshoes:
Snowshoes: These high-tension nets of rope or sinew in wooden frames which are lashed to the feet spread your weight across the snow, making you much less likely to break through the crust and rendering walking much easier. Snowshoes reduce the penalty for walking through heavy snow by 50%; for example, if moving through snow normally costs you 2 squares of movement per square traveled, snowshoes reduce this cost to 1.5 squares per square traveled.

So you cannot take a 5ft step..but you do move faster than normal (in your case 15'
