The Lady looks at you all, over the list, and then back to you all. With a careful smile, she looks over the group, Well. You mentioned a cave. Have you looked it over yet? If not, it is legal property of the immoral wizard, and would therefore belong to me as the executor of the will.

She wipes her hands, stands up, and paces the room. However, this cave is not on his property. Therefore, it could be considered free to any who would loot it as he is dead, much the same as a tomb.

She turns to face the group as a whole, staring deeply into each of you if you match her eyes I would regard it as important that that space is investigated, but maybe not as important it is reported. If any significant evil is found, I would want to know about it. But, if the location has more bobbles that would be necessarily important at the auction, I would not mind a few missing. I can always use people who are indebted to me rather than those who I have to pay. Do I make myself clear?

She then returns to her seat and drinks a bit of wine. Do you have any more questions or have anything else you need to report?

With that, the lady returns to eating. After a mouthful of wine, without making eye contact, she says Well as long as we are in agreement. Please don't let me detain you further. I'm sure you have more work that needs to be done. Once arrangements have been made, I will contact you with the nature of the auction. As promised, I will see that you are allowed audience for the treasures you found.

With that, you are allowed to finish your meals, but then you are lead out of the room by the groom and eventually find yourselves being lead to the main gate. There the groom bows and closes the gate after you. He is not unkind, but he is professional in his detachment.

At the cave

The bodies of two servants lie near the shore of a small pond that runs out of a cave at the base of a 30-foot-high cliff. Both bodies have been mutilated by wild animals-little remains but their ruined gear and
some scattered bones. As you approach to look closer, two loves emerge from the cave followed by a much larger wolf. They growl at you and raise their hackles...

Entering the cave, the pond in front of the cave entrance never gets deeper than four feet at the center-the creek that covers the cave floor is one foot deep, leaving six feet of headroom above. The spring that feeds the creek trickles out of the rock face in the alcove to the west, and an increasingly shallow tunnel leads around the corner to the northwest.

You continue deeper into the cave and the shallow water ends at the entrance to a large cave. The air within is almost uncomfortably warm. Four chests sit at the far side of the cavern. The ceiling, studded with stalactites, is ten feet high above the floor at the entrance. The other thing that dominates the room is the large spiderlike thing that dominate the room. It stinks of death and rot. It stalks toward your group...

That was quick!

Under the combined assault of you all, you beat the creature into submission. You are left in the cave. It's hot and stinks, but there is treasure...

The checks are locked, but you remember the keys you gathered before in the manor. Using them you unlock the chests. Within these chests is a total of 11,000 cp, 7,200 sp, 1,800 gp, and 60 pp, all in small cloth pouches of 100 coins each. Inside the largest chest are Hunclay's greatest treasures. Sitting atop an exquisite darkwood case are four packets of enhanced dust of darkness and a scroll of permanency (CL 12th) in a mithral scroll tube, itself worth 300 gp. The darkwood case is worth 250 gp, and contains five books. Four of these are rare antique tomes on astronomy written in Ancient Osiriani; each is worth l,ooo gp. The fifth tome is a tattered volume called Secrets of the Dreaming Dark.

What would you like to do now?

Searching the place, you find nothing hidden. The room was his hiding spot, but he thought the zombie thing would be his defense. Nothing is hidden.

Secrets of the Dreaming Dark is a very old and massive tome, several hundred pages long and bound in black leather. It claims to be a translation of a much older book, but the book's original author is unknown. The pages are scribed in Aldo in cramped handwriting, and include complex star charts and maps of strange, distant worlds. There are numerous breathtaking illustrations of eerie monsters and alien gods as well. Unfortunately, pages or even entire chunks of the ancient text are loose or missing here and there throughout. Successfully reading and understanding the book requires the ability to read Aklo, as well as years of intense study. One can try to get a sense of the book by succeeding at a DC 30 Linguistics check after spending 48 hours
studying it. Who want's the play with the creepy book now?

The book itself is not magical. It's a tome full of knowledge, but it is not a book of power.

After looking over the lot, you can head back and relax. You spend another fine evening reliving your adventures to the inhabitants of the local tavern.

The next day, riders leave the town in several directions. Over the coming week, people begin to come into town....

Over the next few days while you tell your tales of the tower, the kobolds, and the manor, you lose some of your audience as more and more new people enter the town. These people range from the expected Kalistrocrats, the Adras family, Sir Pelle Benhovy, Arnholde Devy, the Belhaim historian Bassy, and Swerlo Grayhands to some of the more obscure like the Mercantile Consortium of Maheto. Some have come from afar while others are much closer.

Time passes and things happen. Get your bids in by Wednesday! Something I forgot as well, the Baroness has a token of her favor for you. You may have her pay 1/2 of a winning bid, up to 7,500 GP

On the day of the event, all the bidders go to an outdoor amphitheater. There the Baroness greats all the assembled and her footman handles the considerable sums the bidders pay to enter the auction. You are given a wink and a nod and directed to a front seat. When all the people are assembled, the Baroness steps forward and says GREETINGS! Let us bow our heads and morn the loss of Hunclay. While we are gathered today, let us not forget his loss. An odd hush goes over the crowd.

After a moment, the Baroness continues, Let us continue. I will have my footman be the auctioneer for this event. We will follow the standards of this event; the bids will continue until another person does not contest your bid. Each of you are allowed to bid for as many or a few items as you choose. And may the best person win! And with a flourish she sits down next to your group. Her foot man brings out the first item, and the rapid talk begins...
