You look into the pit. It's full of *stuff*, but you don't see anything of interest or value.

I'll assume you go to the next room. as their is only one place left to go!

You leave the last room and continue through the hall to the last room you can see. Six stone slabs sit on the floor of this chamber. Heaped upon each are metal tools, gears, springs, and other parts for the construction of mechanical creations. You notice a few things in this room-1) all the clockwork is worth money as its in nice condition 2) there is a secret door out of the room...

The light is indeed magic. Doing a quick check it is abjuration.

You move toward the closest room. It opens up into a smaller room where an iron gate hangs ajar. The room within is bare, except for a conjuration circle of silvery metal inlaid in the stone floor and a small, rickety table on which sits a thin journal. Inside the circle hovers a plump human infant and a gigantic, gore-fattened fly. The creature looks at you and says in a cute voice, You're not the master. What have you done?
