Raising his hand directly towards the moon, Rodok seems to grab at something, and when he pulls down his hand a moment later, the blue glow has intensified a bit, and each of the members of the group feel buoyed by some unknown, unfamiliar power.

"By all means then, my... sick old friend," Vaenathis quips with a smile as he addresses the older of the two dwarves, "the stage, as they say, is yours. Let us knock and find out then." The half-elf takes a step forward, taking care to still allow Kresh to take the initiative but staying close enough to intervene if things get complicated.

You put your plan into motion, heading for the house, as you get close, you can see that the large manor is built in a mix of imperial and norden styles. The steep roof has eaves decorated with carvings of fey creatures and the door features an ornate crest with two fiery birds flanking a young woman carrying an amphora. As you approach, two guards come out to meet you.

"Hold and state your business here," one of them commands. Neither is overly suspicious or hostile, considering they have yet to level their polearms at you, but neither are they so trusting that they come any closer than twenty feet of you.

Kresh raises his head from atop kruuh, Giving a cough before speaking with a shiver in his voice. "M-my name is Kaulmark, I am old and in p-poor health, my companions and I are seeking s-shelter from this storm. I-I don't know how much longer I can take the c-cold..." Kresh's head flops back down between Kruuh's horns after finishing his lie. "P-please..."


Salsa, Vaen, Kresh, and Rodok:
Schandra was fine with the plan they had concocted, it certainly wouldn't hurt anyway. Unfortunately it turned out that Kresh wasn't very good at lying it seemed and she said, "My apologies for my friend here, he's a bit slow. We've been stuck in this cold for far too long now and I would dearly love to get warm again. Would the Master of the house be willing to extend his hospitality to us for the night?"

Suppressing a smile at Kresh's performance, Vaenathis does his best to appear feeling too cold for his liking. Hardly a difficult thing mind you, given the weather. "You have nothing to fear from us," he says simply and with a warm smile, extending his hands to show he is unarmed. Then he takes a look at the guards' polearms, making it a point to swallow a little hard in an attempt to convey his unfamiliarity with weapons and perhaps his trepidation of them.

Whoops, yeah, I missed that entirely. I think it was posted while I was writing up my own post that came after, so I didn't see it.

DM-Salsa and Yngvild:
Arradir nods and accepts the invitation, and soon he's seated--again, somewhat uncomfortably--at the large table. He quickly begins scratching Ylva and feeding her bits of meat, more to soothe himself than the dog. Since the lad seems more focused on Yngvild, he lets her speak first if she likes, but he'll put forward his own comment if it seems like the silence is dragging on too long.

"Well, I can't say I've had too many 'adventures', as you put it. But I've lived out in the wilds most my life. I train animals by trade. Dogs and birds, mostly. Always had a knack with animals." The shaggy man pauses and rubs Ylva's head, then looks up. "Course, I suppose I could tell you 'bout the time some unfortunate bandits decided to try and rob me. Bit gruesome for mixed company, though, that one."

Arradir and Yngvild:

As your are bombarded with questions during dinner, a man dressed in the livery of the house enters the dining hall and approaches Brutus. After a brief, whispered conversation, he turns his attention back to you.

"Pardon the interruption. A matter came up, but it's being handled now. Please continue," the noble says, urging you to finish whatever you were saying before the guard's arrival.

DC 20 Perception to overhear the conversation.


Vaen, Schandra, Rodok, and Kresh:

One of the guards leaves and comes back several minutes later.

"Follow me," he says, leading behind the manor and to a stablehouse some hundred feet away, and small enough to be hidden by the hill that rises steeply behind it to the crest the manor sits atop.

"Lord Arvina has graciously allowed you to stay here for the night. It's warm and comfortable, so there should be no concerns about the cold," the guard escorting you says before showing you where you may find anything you might need and making it clear that the bull is to stay well clear of cows being kept in the back stalls.

After making sure you are settled and comfortable, he leaves you be and returns to his post.

Yngvild entertains with tales of her hunting, and somewhat watered down tales of her encounters with bandits preying on a small town she was passing through, leaving just enough of the more violent details to be exciting.

Schandra was relieved that they got inside. It wasn't perfect, they weren't inside the keep itself, but they had at least made it inside the walls. After the guard left Schandra said, "Well, we made it this far, what now?" She looked at her companions and asked, "Does anyone have any talent with sneaking or picking locks?"

Arradir:

You hear the guard tell Lord Arvina that there are some suspicious people outside claiming to be travelers and that one of them is an old dwarf that they claim was the reason for them seeking shelter. The Lord tells the guard to put them up in the stable house for the night and post a guard. He also mentioned dealing with them later after you and Yngvild have retired.

Arradir and Yngvild:

A couple of hours later, with bellies full and the hour growing late, you are lead to a couple of guest rooms on the second floor. Ylva seems especially sleepy and content as you follow the servant. Both rooms are richly furnished and the beds are warm and comfortable.

Going to give the others a chance to chime in and formulate a plan. Keep in mind, you are not in the manor proper but the stables nearby. Also, Rodok, you seem to be double posting a lot. Just thought you'd like a heads up.

"Well, I'll probably get us caught. Gettin so shakey in my age, its all I can do to keep standin." Tugging on his beard Kresh adds. "Less someone can suggest another way to get inside, a full frontal assault may be our only way in... I'll get us caught for sure if we try sneakin."

Quite pleased to have such a luxurious place to spend the night, albeit not exactly what she expected when Gavia first approached her, Yngvild bids Arradir good night as she heads to her appointed room, setting doen her gear and stripping off her armor and clothing before climbing into bed.

Arradir bids good night to Yngvild as well, and enters his room. The whispered conversation from earlier picks at his interest, though, and coupling that with the strangeness of this place... Arradir is far from paranoid by nature, but he's suspicious enough to want to check this out.

So some five minutes after they're led to the rooms, Arradir pokes his head back out and slips over to quietly knock on Yngvild's door. "There's something going on here. I heard the man earlier talk about some strangers out in the stable house. I was thinking I'd see who they are. Said they had a greybeard dwarf with them."

Having only just crawled into bed, Yngvild smiles to herself as she hear the knock at her door. Getting up and walking to the door, she opens it, eyes widening in surprise at the sight of Arradir standing there. As he explains what he overheard, the wilderness warrior sighs. ”Running around someones hose at weird hours of the night is a good way to end up spending the night out in the cold, but you have a point.”

Shaking her head she turns to walk back into the room. ”Give me a moment to get dressed and get my armor on.” she mutters, picking up her clothing from the floor and getting dressed, completely unconcerned with the fact that she had been standing naked in front of him.

”A greybeard dwarf eh.. that’s a rarity around here.”

Perhaps oddly, considering how uncomfortable he's been throughout the evening, Arradir barely reacts to Yngvild's nudity. "Cold nights I can handle. Maybe even better than this." He glances up and down the hallway as the woman dresses, more to check for anyone else about than a sense of modesty. "What I can't handle is trouble around that I'm not aware of. Or at least the reason for it."

The man scratches his head and glances around again. "There's plenty rare around this place, seems like. Like a couple Norden guests, welcomed with open arms."

"It does feel like a bit of a shame to have gone to the trouble of bluffing our way in only to try a more direct approach as soon as we have done so, but I am not sure we have another option. Nevertheless, we should perhaps try talking before resorting to the whole cracking of heads and kicking of posteriors thing."

Ylva's been drugged. She isn't in any danger, but she's effectively exhausted.

Arradir and Yngvild:

As you begin to sneak around, you hear a couple of guards talking quietly around a corner in imperial.

"Poor bastards, Probably don't even realize what's going to happen to them."

"Quiet fool! Do you know what happened to the last person who made a comment like that? At least we're not on the receiving end of it."

What do you do?


Kresh, Rodok, Schandra, and Vaen:

In a lull in your conversation, you hear the sound of boots shuffling through snow outside. Many pairs of heavily armored boots.

What do you do?


Salsa, Vaen, Kresh, and Rodok:
As Schandra was about to make a suggestion she heard the sound of armored boots shuffling around outside. She didn't like this one bit. Thinking Schandra tried to recall how far up the nearest window was that she could see in the manor as they were brought to the stables. She realized that, with a bit of luck, she might be able to teleport them all inside, maybe even without the soldiers knowing they were gone.

[ooc]So how high up were any windows in the manor that we could see as we were brought in here. The maximum distance is 140 ft to reach the inside of that window.

Kresh, Rodok, Schandra, and Vaen:

You can reach the windows on the side facing the stable house, but you'll need to be on the roof and will only be able to see the windows on the top floor because of the angle.

If you decide to go that route, please roll me stealth checks. You'll also need Handle animal to bring Kruuh along.


Salsa, Vaen, Kresh, and Rodok:
"I believe that I can get us all inside if I can get a view of the window. We'd appear in the top floor but it should be a good place to start. Once inside we should be able to explore the place." She paused a moment and then said, "On the other hand maybe I can get myself inside by expressing my 'thanks for the lords hospitality with my body' but it would leave me alone and you all stuck out here." She considered carefully, one foot tapping as the flames of her hair wavered, "I think I prefer teleporting inside as the better option. I would have to send each of us separately but I can do it. I have to get a line of sight to the window first though."

My thought here is to use the warp sphere to teleport us each into that room where that window is. I just need to see it and send us one ata time.

Kresh whispers to his companions as the boots get closer. "I think Rodak has the right idea. Let's deal with'em first, don't want'em gettin suspicious if we're tryin sneaky stuff.

DM-Salsa and Yngvild:
Arradir hisses a curse under his breath as he notices Ylva's sluggishness, and he draws the long, heavy knife he keeps at his belt. "The food was drugged. At least what Ylva ate. This is no good."

When he hears the talking, Arradir holds up a hand and crouches low, sneaking up to the corner in hopes of perhaps getting an eye on the guards. He doesn't speak the Imperial tongue, never found need to learn it, but between everything else, he doesn't trust anything happening at this point. He looks to the woman beside him, silently asking what she thinks with his eyes.

The guards bust in through the door and the eight of them quickly surround you. Behind them is an imperious man in his middle years girded in fine armor with an expensive fur-trimmed cloak about his shoulders.

"Hmm, yes," he says in imperial-accented nordic, "you do hope you haven't angered me, for things will be so much worse if you have. Now, let us cease this dance and get to the point. Why are you four here?"

"Are not the cold outside and the age of our friend here good enough reasons?" The half-elf tries one last time to stick to their story, a smile and a friendly expression on his face, perhaps with a hint of an apology for all the fuss. Still, it is also an attempt to buy some time because, truth be told, a fight seems inevitable. Not that he looks forward to it, but if it is to come to that... well, a weapon is only a thought away.

Kresh speaks up after his half elven friend finishes. "Aye, it's true. My pep ain't like it used to be an I was startin to seize up out there. Happy you lot let us in honestly."

Schandra looked nervously at all the guards surrounding them before turning her gaze back to the lord of the manor and said, "As we told your guards we were traveling and found ourselves caught in the cold. My friend here," she indicated Kresh, "and myself couldn't take much more of it and we needed a warm place to stay. Since we're not skilled at setting up a camp we noticed the glow of your manor here and hoped that you would be willing to give poor travelers a warm place for the night."

"Awfully spry for a sick old dwarf," the lord says mockingly before turning to his guards. "Take them."

The guards, armed with spears move and attack before you can react. The ones attacking Rodok and Vaen fail to pierce their armor. Both of the ones attack Kresh stab him and sorely wound the dwarf. Schandra, though, jumps as the first spear scrapes her armor, and turns to give the second spearman an almost perfect shot at her neck. She is badly wounded and blood flows freely from the gash.

You guys are up, Kresh got hit for 17 points of piercing damage on 2 attacks.
Schandra got skewered with a crit for a whopping 23 damage.
The guards are in melee with you and Lord Arvina is about ten feet away. Any attempts to get to the lord will need an acrobatics check at a -5 penalty to get past the guards who have you encircled.

How do I determine the DC to cast defensively with spheres of power? I'm not sure what the effective spell level is of my abilities.
