Male Elder GM

Coxswain Halrex shouts out, "You need to subdue the beast before it kills more of us! You only have a few seconds until it breaks my spell!"
She then begins pounding out an inspiring martial rhythm on the great drum near the mast.

The girallon rolls at an opportune time, and the lightning bolt misses it.

31 damage total to the girallon (including a bonus 1 for the drumming that Slei missed)

The crew seem relieved that the heroes are dealing with the savage girallon.

Halrex continues with her inspirational drumming, and adds, "I can attempt to keep it down, and I have some minor healing if needed."

I was wondering how long it would take before the "damned dirty ape"

Normally an 18 would hit. REAL shame about that natural 1.

Male Half-orc Brawler 4 Init +1; Per +7; AC 18, T 12, F 16; HP 30/35; F +6, R +6, W +2

On his turn, Grodar will attack the girallon again.
Power Attack Flurry of Blows: 1d20 + 5 + 4 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 5 + 4 - 2 + 2 = 28 +2 flanking, +4 vs. prone

Zigil double moves to G14 to see if there's anything that she can do for Blobby the ex-rower. On the way, she glances at the floor where Giles' errant blow hit, to see if the bull strength made a difference in the size of the dent he made.

Sovereign Court

I forgot the Bulls Strength! Oh... nvmd.

Male Elder GM

Eldan's missile strikes the ape, then Grodar unleashes a pair of powerful blows against the supine simian. It wheezes a bit as the half-orc hammers at its ribs, but resumes laughing afterwards.

65 damage, I believe.

Zigil can see that the crew member is well beyond saving.

Male Wolf Init:+3, HP: 25/25, AC:18/14/14, F:+6, R:+7, W:+2, Perception: +1, low-light vision, scent

Male Human Druid 4, Init: +4, HP: 35/35, AC:21/14/18, F:+6, R:+4, W:+8, Perception:+4

Mannfred moves to I17.
Agressive Thundercloud Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 3) = 13

Male Elder GM

Dog's fangs sink deep into the beast, and it stops moving. The thundercloud then blasts it for further damage.

Halrex calls out, "Try to save it! That's valuable cargo!"

Out of initiative, but still somewhat time-sensitive.

Androgynous Aasimar Cleric 4; Init +0; Darkvision 60; Per +10; AC 19 (flat 19/touch 10/shieldless 17); HP 36; F+6, R +1, W+8

"Dammit, Halrex, I'm a cleric, not a veterinarian!"

Zigil will try to move adjacent to the creature, and stabilize it.

If Zigil can touch the creature from H13, perhaps by standing on a rower's bench, then he moves there. Otherwise he takes the fastest way to a square adjacent to it. Might need Giles or Dog to move.

"After I stabilize this beast, we need to get it back into restraints and fix its cell. We don't want it breaking out again."

Male Elder GM

Stabilize is actually a close range spell.

Male Human Druid 4, Init: +4, HP: 35/35, AC:21/14/18, F:+6, R:+4, W:+8, Perception:+4

Mannfred moves the thundercloud away from the ape.
“Here dog! Good dog!”, Dog comes over for a head rub.
“Well now I know what Lucky was talking about. There was something else on board after all.”

So it is. Okay Zigil will stabilize the creature, and wait till its bound and reimprisoned. He can use a channel energy or two to revive it and bring the team back to full.

"Giles, why don't you use those big new muscles of yours to move the ape back into its cage?"

Male Elder GM

Does Zigil communicate their intent?

Male Human Ranger (trapper) 4. HP: 40/40 AC: 19/13/16 F:+6 R:+7 W:+4 Init:+3 Perc: +9

Giles will ask the men to help him get the creature back in its restraints. He will take 20 on Disable Device to improve the restraints (total 31).

“Seems to me this Captain has some explaining to do...”

Male Elder GM

Giles leads the effort to drag the girallon back through the doors to the hold astern of the rowing deck. The doors leading to the hold are made of iron. The hold is obviously used as an armoury, and contains some spears, battle-axes, and chain shirts, but also holds a large iron cage. The door to the cage is swinging open.

There are no restraints within the cage.

Giles:
As Giles seeks to improve the restraints, he can see signs that the lock on the cage was picked, and that the iron doors were unlocked.

Male Elder GM

Halrex speaks up.
"Probably best to leave it unconscious for now, at least until we can get the captain down here to lock the cage again."

Giles: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Zigil: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
Mannfred: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Eldan: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Grodar: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Slei: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

Giles,Zigil:
There is a square of discoloured floorboards near the forward wall of the armoury on the starboard side.

DM Rambler wrote:

Yes.

Zigil will point out the discoloured floorboards near the armoury to Halrex. "Was something taken from here, or does it look like someone has done something to the floorboards here?"

Male Human Ranger (trapper) 4. HP: 40/40 AC: 19/13/16 F:+6 R:+7 W:+4 Init:+3 Perc: +9

Giles will quietly inform the others that it was sabotage. Someone picked the lock.

Male Human Ranger (trapper) 4. HP: 40/40 AC: 19/13/16 F:+6 R:+7 W:+4 Init:+3 Perc: +9

By the others I only mean the party.

Male Human Ranger (trapper) 4. HP: 40/40 AC: 19/13/16 F:+6 R:+7 W:+4 Init:+3 Perc: +9

If there is time, Giles will take 20 on Perception to search for any clues.

Male Half-orc Brawler 4 Init +1; Per +7; AC 18, T 12, F 16; HP 30/35; F +6, R +6, W +2

Once the party has a chance to speak alone "Whoever picked the lock must’ve done it in the night. I think we can rule out the rowers, since that’s where it got out."

Male Elder GM

Halrex gives Zigil a dirty look.
"Best speak to the captain about that."

She then examines the girallon, giving the party a moment to confer quietly.

Shortly after, Captain Bloodtusk arrives. He and Halrex speak quietly for a moment, then he locks the cage with a key.

He approaches the party.
"Thanks for stopping the beast. A shame it was too late for poor Taug. The ape should've been unable to stand, let alone attack, with the drugs it was fed."

Male Elder GM

See Discussion thread for post re: Delaying.

Male Elf Wizard Lvl: 4 HP: 17 AC: 13/10/13 F: 1 R: 4 W: 7 Init: 4 Percep: 6

“Drugs? Someone was responsible for tending this beast?”

Male Human Druid 4, Init: +4, HP: 35/35, AC:21/14/18, F:+6, R:+4, W:+8, Perception:+4

Does a Girallon count as an animal for Charm Animal?

While the party is conferring, Mannfred says "Clearly one of the crew members is out to either sabotage or is trying to kill someone in particular. We should try to speak to the captain in private. But if it is the captain himself, that could be a problem. I will attempt to speak to Lucky and the Girallon when I get a chance. They may be able to describe the saboteur."

Mannfred is still memorizing Speak with Animals instead of endure elements. I just haven't updated the character sheet.

Male Elder GM
Mannfred wrote:

No, it is a magical beast.

Bloodtusk answers Eldan, "Of course, it was fed. And it should've just slept through our journey. But it's not like somebody was stationed to guard it, we don't have the manpower."

Sovereign Court

I see no reason not to talk to the Captain. It is possible but perhaps unlikely that he is behind it. Why would he risk his men and ship? I say we speak to him privately.
