Grilnik Urist |
I feel like we should interrogate it, but I think Grilnik has had enough to deal with today... and it's evil! xD
Heedless of the silver on the floor, Grilnik advances on the creature. "We will remove your evil from this plane more permanently!"
He swings in an arc up from the ground, hoping to crush it against the ceiling.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (6, 1) + 3 = 10
Bullseye Brynn |
Not having any idea what an 'accuser devil' is, and seeing that this thing is disgusting, Brynn follows suit. She draws a vial of holy water and tosses it at the devil.
Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Holy Water Damage: 2d4 + 1 ⇒ (1, 1) + 1 = 3
Her throw is way off, but thankfully it still splashes the demon a bit.
DM Nex |
Going to skip init and go with how we are going now
Weapons swing wildly at the flying creature, missing every time. The holy water splashes on the ground next to the creature, some of it splashing onto it, burning it, but the rest washing out part of the circle's ring of silver dust. Breaking the circle it flashes briefly. The creature now being free.
With Bethany right in front of it, it reaches out and bites.
Bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 Hit
Damage: 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + (6) = 11 5 Blud/Pierce 6 acid damage
The bite landing, sickly green acid oozes out of its mouth onto Bethany, burning her.
Fort Save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16 Succeed
Round 2
Everyone <- go for it
Accuser Devil (27/30 HP, AC 17, T 15, FF 13)
Bethany Carpenter |
"You made me bleed. Nasty little devil."
Again her hamemr swings this time in an upper cut hoping to smash the thing into the ceiling.
Big Brother: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Damage: 2d6 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (2, 6) + 5 + (3) = 16
Vors Orcblood |
Vors continues to use the pointy end of his rapier against the monster.
Rapier: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Grilnik Urist |
I guess she made the save anyway (and was already raging for 17 AC), but don't forget that it hasn't been 3 hours, so she still has +1 resistance bonus to all saves, +1 to AC, and I take half her HP damage (so that attack only took her 6 temp hp and I get -5, right?) :D
Grilnik recovers from smacking the ceiling and then tries swinging right to left.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 5) + 3 = 13
DM Nex |
That makes a good point. I am not sure I know when Bethany is Raging. Do you flag it somewhere. I see both of your stats, but I really am never sure what to look at to see if you are, in fact, raging
If I could suggest something. Can you put a [s poiler=Current Effects] tag in your Race thing. Put in if you are raging. What spells are in effect, etc. Would make my life easier
Also yes, there is split damage
Bethany Carpenter |
Sure I will change how I track it. First time barbarian so figuring it out.
Bullseye Brynn |
Seeing that her holy water erased some of the circle, Brynn quickly draws another and tosses it at the devil baby, hoping to cause it more harm this time around...
Ranged Touch Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Holy Water Damage: 2d4 + 1 ⇒ (3, 2) + 1 = 6
Oi vey. I swear I have horribly missed everything, in all campaigns for at least two days. So bad. At least I get the one splash damage!
DM Nex |
With Bethany's hammer glowing with blessings of the drunk god, it crashes into the creature injuring it quite badly.
Grilink's hammer seems to be resisted slightly, but even with that, the swing is too great and it crushes the creature like a fly against the ground. Its bottom half oozing strange liquid onto the floor.
With the death of this creature, the group is able to look around the room. The only thing of real interest is the book on the table.
A quick glance into it shows it as a journal. Though it would take a bit of time to go through it all. About half an hour of reading.
Bullseye Brynn |
Brynn warily approaches the journal. "This might have important information about that other monster in the pit... I should probably read it before we move on."
Brynn reads the journal.
Bethany Carpenter |
Taking a shuddering breath Bethany leans on Big Brother.
"I wanted to smash it to the ceiling but I guess this works."
She is quiet for a moment while her exaustion leaves her body.
DM Nex |
The journal seems to be an extensive catalog on appearances and behavior of outsiders conjured in this room. Along with the services Hunclay secured from them.
Most of them where conjured purely for questioning. But there are notes of 2 more permininate summons. One described as being in the pit and another described as being behind the light wall.
The one in the pit is a schir. It was summoned to be Hunclay's bodyguard on a visit to meet someone named Barlau.
The one behind the light wall is described as as Shae. The journal describes how Hunclay believed, erroneously, that she might know about the Dark Tapestry. Something he was studying.
Other creatures sommoned in this room run the gamut from devil to demon, azata to archon. The topics of Hunclay's research varied from the creation of constructs and homunculi, investigations into Belhaim's history, and discussions of various magical items and spells, but by far and away the most common tpoic was the Dark Tapestry. Time and time again, the notes mention a failed conjuration of a "representative of the Dominion of the Black". Hunclay conjured it only to have to kill it when it attacked him. The notes show that this took place in "my safe cave". Mentioning this is about a mile north of Belhaim.
You can tell this book would be worth quite a bit of money. Because of the names and offering preferences of a good three dozen such creatures are recorded within.
Grilnik Urist |
As Brynn reads, Grilnik takes the opportunity to sit down and rebraid his beard. He mutters to himself for almost the entire ten minutes, and after finishing with his beard, Grilnik splits his attention between the way the came in and poking his nose over Brynn's shoulder past Brynn's elbow to peek at the writing.
Vors Orcblood |
Vors takes a cue from Grilnik and slumps down on the floor to rest while Brynn reads.
"So..continue on or come back tomorrow?" the roguish cleric poses.
Bullseye Brynn |
Brynn shares the contents of the book with the others. Particularly reading aloud the information about the demon in the pit (do we learn anything useful about the Schir?), the history of town (does this information help us accomplish our history of town quest?), the 'safe cave' (is this the cave we found the treasure chest in?), and of course, how valuable the book is.
"Well, at least it was worth the read." Brynn remarks. She puts the book away and writes it in the inventory with high value.
Then she rises and stretches. "Might as well finish up here."
DM Nex |
Schir's weak to silver and good. Immune to electricy and resists nearly all energy types. Likes to charge at people.
The history he was looking into was related to its founding, and the story of its founder. Along with the local area. Or how it was in the past. More info, but not quite enough for quest. Bread crumbs though
Yes that fits the description of the cave you found earlier. As well as the beast you fought. LIkely summoned. Though this was undead when you fought it, so that makes sense since the journal said he killed it.
The journal is worth a good thousand to certain people.
The hall continued on. Continue? Or backtrack? Or rest?
Grilnik Urist |
"I don't recall any walls of light, perhaps we should find it and then recuperate before we face those last two creatures? Hopefully that Shae thing won't be as evil and creepy as the Schir or this creature." Grilnik punctuates the sentence by kicking the dead devil's corpse before starting down the way down to the far end of the hallway.
Bullseye Brynn |
Brynn draws her bow and follows Grilnik further down the hall.
DM Nex |
As you round the corner and through the next set of doors. The walls of this room are covered in arcane symbols. In the northern chamber, a wooden table sits against the eastern wall, with several items laid atop it. A bright light shines forth from an opening in the south wall.
Yellow square in area that is very bright
Grilnik Urist |
Grilnik walks into the room and starts inspecting the table after squinting at bright light.
That took less time to find than I thought.
"Everybeard ready to head back to The Wise Piper?"
Bullseye Brynn |
Brynn examines the area with detect magic.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Bethany Carpenter |
Bethany hangs back and lets the others do their work. These new powers, she wants to keep using them. Best to hold back.
DM Nex |
This looks like Wall of Light. A spell.
https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/w/wall-of-light/
Not going to type it out haha
It looks like it was made permanent.
If you look through the light, you can see an area at the end not bathed in light, Though it is hard to make out beyond that, it looks like a window of some kind, with a very faint shadow of something inside.
On Grilnik talking, "What's this now? I recognize your voice not, mortal. Are you minions of the petty human? If not, I plead with you to release me from this unjust and outrageous imprisonment. Do so and you shall be rewarded"
Bullseye Brynn |
"Don't approach the wall," Brynn tells her companions. "It will blind you if you get too close."
Diverting her eyes from the wall, Brynn calls out, "We are no minions of his. Tell us who you are."
I know it's name is Shae and it's probably a shadow creature since Hunclay chose to stick it behind a wall of light spell, but Brynn has no idea what/who 'shae' is. She's warily testing it's honesty.
After it answers she asks, "Why were you imprisoned?"
Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 19
Grilnik Urist |
Grinik turns and takes a couple of steps as he hears the voice, but Brynn's warning stops him in his tracks.
OF COURSE there's another trap...
He listens intently to the creature's response.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
After hearing its response, Grilnik thinks out loud: "Well, it hates Hunclay. I like this shadow-plane person already."
More quietly he asks the others "People from the shadow plane aren't evil, are they?"
Knowledge (Planes) - but only if the DC is 10 or less: 1d20 ⇒ 11
Bullseye Brynn |
Brynn shrugs, having genuinely no idea.
Vors Orcblood |
Squinting into the wall of light, Vors asks, "If we let you out, do you have the means to return to the Shadow Plane or are you still stuck here?"
Bethany Carpenter |
"Ask it if it will keep its word. Don't devils have to do that? Or is that fey?"
Grilnik Urist |
"Well, I don't know much about the Plane of Shadow, but not liking Hunclay is definitely a point in your favor."
"Anyone have any ideas on how to get through the light wall?" Grilnik adds before inspecting the desk some more.
Bullseye Brynn |
Brynn purses her lips. "You should be able to pass right through," Brynn calls out. "It will weaken you and blind you, but both can be magically overcome in time. We'll help you out of here once you're through."
They'll take negative levels and be blinded, but they should just be able to walk out, shouldn't they?
Bullseye Brynn |
Brynn raises an eyebrow. She silently shakes her head at the others. Clearly she has no intention of going blind in an attempt to free some shadow creature.
Brynn's nowhere near nice enough to even try getting close to that lock. lol.
Grilnik Urist |
Poor thing...
"Did the wizard ever cause the light to dim?"
Grilnik uses the hilt of his longhammer to poke at different places in the light wall, hoping that the lock will be large and obvious from far away.
But it isn't as obvious as a padlock is it? xD
Vors Orcblood |
"Say, who has Hunclay's ring of key? Perhaps the key might be literal", Vors posed.
Grilnik Urist |
"I gave them to you a while back to help with one of the locks, are they still with your tools? I can give it a shot if I can find the lock..."
Grilnik continues to poke the Wall of Light.
Vors Orcblood |
"Oh yeah! Boy that sonic scream must have done a job on my noogin." Vors hands the key chain to the dwarf.
DM Nex |
"The... wizard.. he put me here behind the light and left me. He has not visited me in some time.
Yes it seems like a normal lock on a cell door
Ok full disclosure. Verik was given an item that might help with this.. I had to go digging in old posts, but he was handed powder of darkness.. He left, so it kinda threw this all up in the air.. I normally would let you figure it out, but since none of you actually have it. How do you want to handle that? Is it gone? Or did you take all of Verik's stuff
Grilnik Urist |
Actually, I took the dust of darkness and the Any-Tool. I think we left the rest of it alone without worrying about it too much.
I like the dust of darkness idea, though it only duplicates a second level spell for one target...
"Thanks Vors." Grilnik says as he accepts the key ring.
He frowns at the shae's response.
"Well, if there isn't anything in here that can help, maybe the dust from that cavern will do something."
Grilnik finds one of the four pouches of Dust of Darkness in his belt pouch, jingling a few coins as he carefully pulls it out.
"Here goes one bag of dust." Grilnik tosses the contents of the small pouch onto the Wall of Light.
If the dust miraculously shuts down the wall or a portion thereof, Grilnik will just let the Shae out with Hunclay's key or encourage Vors to pick the lock xD
I suppose Grilnik has a +8 Fort vs spells, he might be able to just will his eyes open long enough to open the door xD
DM Nex |
Yeah its not listed in the spell, but the dust works. Spoilers I guess.
As Grilnik throws some of the dust at the light wall, it seems to darkness it enough to stand through. It does not remove the effect, but it does dimish it so it seems just like a lit hall.
As Grilnik appraches the door, you can see a shadowy figure. At first glance you can see it is a female of whatever race she is (you know it as a Shae).
She turns to you, "Well, well. Looks like you are resourceful. Thank you kind one.
As Grilnik pulls the key ring out and unlocks the door, somewhat worrying, he opens it. The creature steps forward. "I wish to get out of here as soon as possible, I do not want to get hit with that light again"
She walks past everyone without much care. There is an intese grace behind her steps. She walks into the next room, where the table with impliments sits. She takes a look at the items on the table. "Good. The human didn't hide my gear too far away."
She grabs the gear and starts to done it. There is a lack of modesty, but the creature itself does not seem to care. Her shadowy form naked until she dons her armor that looks exotic and almost like a full plate of some sort. she also grabs 2 weapons. A very decorated Scimitar and a short sword. Both glow a dark energy the second she picks them up.
"Thank you. My name is Maffei. I am in your debt. I can help you fulfill your task. After which I am to leave. What is your quest? Also I am still drained of energy. I will need some magic to fix this. Till then I may not be as much help as you wish of me. Do you have a method of removing the damage done by that light?"
Bullseye Brynn |
Well, this is disconcerting.
"I do not," Brynn replies with a kind smile. "Apologies." She gives Maffei a graceful curtsy. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Maffei. I am Brynn."
So... What she would say our quest is? We have to defeat that demon in order to make this place safe. Should we try to do it with her help, and then bid her farewell?
Grilnik Urist |
Grilnik will definitely want to keep their newly liberated prisoner from harm. If no one else wants to explain, Grilnik will insist her safety is part of their quest to make the mansion safe xD
Also, it's funny she turned out to be a girl. I kept reading her speech with a feminine voice in my head, followed by (re)checking (yet again) for any mention of her gender xD
"Hi Maffei. I'm Grilnik."
"Healing the damage the light caused? Hmmm"
Grilnik carefully retrieves another small bag filled with some Dust of Darkness. "Tomorrow at dawn I could pray to Kurgess for some magic that might help, or" Grilnik holds up the pouch "we could try this stuff again. Mind if I throw some dust on you?"
DM Nex |
"Greetings Dwarf Grilnik. Yes I am drained a bit from the light. Though I am still capable. It sapped my life energies a bit. I am not injured, just drained."
Arcana: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
Looking at the pouch, "I am not sure what that is. If you think it will help. As far as I know that light wall was designed to trap creatures like myself. Your diety's power might be able to bring me back. I know not your capabilities. I just know that if I had stepped foot in that light again, I would have died."
"I will bond to my word. What is your mission?"
Bethany Carpenter |
Bethany takes about five seconds to be completly comfortable with this turn of events.
"Maffei, I'm Bethany. Are names rhyme so there is that." she looks at Grilnik briefly "He fell in a pit earlier. It was funny but hurt, I think. My guess is your will feel better in the morning I do when I am drained."
I won't mention my diety powers, all they do is help break things anyway.
Grilnik Urist |
"...fall in one pit..." Grilnik mutters to himself.
Grilnik starts digging his hand into the pouch in an exaggerated way.
"Close your eyes a moment, Maffei."
Grilnik tosses the Dust of Darkness onto Maffei. Here goes another pouch of questionable use.
"Our mission is to clear out this manor and make it safe. Being that you were Hunclay's prisoner, I believe that part of that mission is to escort you out safely, too."
Grilnik waits a moment hoping for some obvious sign that the dust did something positive.
"...feel any better?"
Bullseye Brynn |
Brynn backs up, wanting to stay out of the magical darkness. "Your recovery will have to wait until tomorrow, then. Come along. We have a demon to defeat before we can leave this place."
"Have you ever battled a schir?" she asks the shae conversationally.
