Hangman's Noose - Pathfinder 1e - Play By Post

Recruitment

A leaning monument to the district's pain, this four-story courthouse is a crumbling marvel of cracked plaster and chipped marble. Once a testament to justice wrought in shining white stone, the courthouse is now a crushed dream, its wretched exterior corrupted by a bloated evil festering within.

Rainwater from a recent downpour mixed with mulch oozes from ruptures in the rock like pus bubbling from a wound. The structure of the eastern wing of the upper floor buckled long ago, and now the bell tower tilts perilously, appearing as though it might careen to the ground below at any moment.

Two massive pillars frame the heavy oak doors of the court. The pillars' surfaces run with cracks and fissures like so many burst veins. The doors sag in their archway like the drooping eyes of a madman. The surrounding structures long ago fell in upon themselves in supplication to the creaking courthouse.

A salt wind blows up the precipice and rakes across the tangled weeds of Beldrin's Bluff. The whole building groans as the wind blows, its tortured lamentation fading to a rasping hiss as the wind ebbs. This croaking murmur never completely fades away. The sun sets in the west, the last slivers of twilight painting the courthouse blood red as darkness creeps closer.

Hello!

I am thinning out my collection and I figured I would give this a go. I am wanting to run some of my old modules before they move on to a friend. I have been playing and running games in person for over 20 years, but that group has played all of these modules and I want one last taste. I have many Pathfinder modules that I would like to string together loosely in a Scooby Doo / Movie of the Week way. You will be a party that is traveling across Golarion and come across towns that are in need. This first module takes place in Beldrin's Bluff in Absalom. The theme of this is a 80s horror slasher theme.

- Hangman's Noose U2 is a first level module for 4 players. The premade characters are a Fighter, Sorcerer, Cleric, and Rogue but I will allow any official Paizo classes. Unchained Classes where it applies.
- The stats used for the premade characters are the Heroic NPC stats. I will allow you to use those (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) or 15 point buy.
- Keeping things a little simple I will only allow core races. Feel free to use the racial variants that are official Paizo variants.
- Max Gold and Hit Points to start. Class average HP following level 1.
- You can pick between the Favorite Class Hit Point, Skill, or class feature.
- Background Skills.
- 2 Traits, no drawbacks.
- Any alignment, but remember the four of you know each other and are traveling companions.
- Maps will be done on Google Slides.
- Have you played this before?
- How many active play by post games are you playing?
- What time zone are you in?

I am going to see how much interest there is in this flavor of the week kind of game and go from there. I would like to kick things off next Friday, January 3rd.

Let's split up and look for clues!

Never played it. EST. 2 normal speed and 2 slow pbp.

Maybe an investigator

Seems interesting. Perhaps I'll roll a Fighter or Brawler.

Questions:
- Have you played this before?
Nope.

- How many active play by post games are you playing?
One rather slow one.

- What time zone are you in?
EST

I have run this before but never managed to finish it.

I've got 3 games I'm in (2 fighters and a cleric, so I won't be applying with those. Maybe a halfing thief or sorcerer.)

I am in the eastern time zone

I'd be interested in this! I own it but have never got a chance to play it. I live in AEST (Australian Eastern Standard Time), but for play-by-post that's never been an issue. I'm a PBP regular, currently running two and playing in two.

Hiya.

Might you be willing to run this for 5 adventuring heroes rather than 4?

Never played or read the adventure. But c'mon...who doesn't love Scooby?

Not currently in any games on this site. In one game with my tabletop buddies through Discord.

I'm in EST.

And I'd be willing to play any class/role that needs filling.

Sounds interesting! I certainly like anything horror-themed! :) Dotting.

- Have you played this before?

No.

- How many active play by post games are you playing?

3!

- What time zone are you in?

CET

Oh, this is exciting. A group interested in this concept.

-Phillip has the right idea. Split up and cover more ground!
-Trawets71 & Jhaeman: If chosen I would hope you will keep player & character knowledge close to the vest.
-Coffee Dragon… I think I’ve just met my favorite kind of dragon. I might be willing to run it for five. This first adventure says that it I for four characters, but I have been doing some looking on the boards and there are suggestions for tables that have larger/small party numbers. I’m not against it.
-Supreveio & Ythiel, welcome! Glad to have your interest!

Going back to Coffee Dragon’s ask of more numbers I might entertain taking all six of you and ending the recruitment phase. It would give you all an opportunity to come up with a balanced party along with ways to tie yourselves together as “those meddling kids.”

I think I will hit freeze after Ythiel. Go ahead and start talking concepts and backgrounds. In depth backgrounds are not required but are always fun to read. If possible, everyone be from Absalom, or at least have lived here for the past 10 years.

Awesome!

Perhaps we could all be former apprentices or commoners from the local area? Even if it's not from the same town, could be from maybe the same duchy or something?

Ok, how about this? If no one has a specific character in mind, we each list two or three things we'd like to play. That way we can start the process of assembling a party of sorts?

Me:
Human Wizard, recently removed from apprentice status, trying to prove himself. Sarcastic.

Dwarf Cleric of Torag, out seeing the world and spreading the truth of The Hammer and Ale. Considering buying a tavern someday.

Half-elf Barbarian, left his tribe with a broken heart when his beloved spurned him for another warrior. Speaks rough common, and sounds less intelligent than he actually is, as it's his second language.

Yay! Thanks GM!

Mmm. I guess Spellcaster/DPS would be taken by either Coffee Dragon or Trawest.

I don't really have a concept right now, but I'm already the Party Healer in two games, and I'd rather go with something a bit different :')

Let's see if I can get some concepts down there (may need to be rebuilt/re-thought):

Old Characters that could be re-worked to fit the module:

Vuldrani Heartsong, Gnome Bard. Classy and sarcastic. Desperately trying to seek out new sensations to ward off a particularly early Bleaching. Mostly a spellcaster. Definitely a Daphne.

Zinli Steelworker, Gnome Gunslinger. Boisterous and fun-loving. Needs to raise money to open her own firearms-focused weapon shop. Much like Fred, she fears nothing and faces problems head-on.

Other Ideas:
Human Shifter, because we need a Scooby. Kinda feral. The epitome of 'we found it in a barrel, and the barbarian kept it, and now it has a name and somehow we discovered it's not even a real rat but it's actually a person?!'

Half-orc Huntmaster, here to prove his mettle in a big town as a mercenary! (because no self-respecting city guard wanted him - not even in a small village)
Will travel with either a goose from his aunt's herd or his grandma's (rip) Brussels Griffon. look, the training leaflet said 'please apply with a dog (any) or a 'large bird of prey' and these qualify, right?... Okay, if you think a goose isn't mean, then you've never met a goose. Definitely isn't above chewing his pet's treats - you can hardly tell the difference between those and the trail rations...

Thanks for having us. Just a note for all, this is a mystery and the NPCs might not be helpful even if you think they should be. My PBP game fell apart because the PCs couldn't handle unhelpful NPCs. That is all I will say about this adventure. I will keep any knowledge I have to myself. That may mean at times I fade into the back for others to handle things. Of course with my CRSS Can't Remember Sh** Syndrome there are things I don't remember.

My halfling sorcerer's magic isn't magic. He's a jeweler with tools that do magical things. Of course a hobbit halfing thief that is a classic. With Ythiel going down the gnome road possible, I could pull out my fire based gnome sorcerer. I will have to update any to the current build rules.

I think I'll take the cleric/healer spot, though I may change him from dwarf to an elf or human. Not sure yet.

And like the others said, Thanks for having us for your game, Carto. :)

Yep, you don't have to worry about me metagaming--I think I read the module maybe five years ago, and my memory is terrible (as my wife will readily testify). I honestly don't remember anything spoilerly about it :)

As for PCs, I'll give to give it a think, but I'm also happy to take on a concept someone else generates or that we need for the party and make them come alive.

I won't give too many tips or hints, but I would suggest that if you get scribe scroll at first level that you take some of you starting gold and use that feat. Being in the theme of 80s horror/slasher movie, there isn't much sleeping when Freddy is around...

One, two, Freddy's coming for you
Three, four, better lock your door
Five, six, grab your crucifix
Seven, eight, gonna stay up late
Nine, ten, never sleep again

I like some of the concepts you guys are putting out there. Keep it up! I really like the two/three options each that Coffee Dragon put forward

Also, while I'm leaning towards the cleric role, if someone else REALLY has an idea that covers that spot, I'm willing to play something else. Not locked on anything yet.

Wouldn't be unhappy to play a wizard either. ;)

Freddy got Fingered after Five Nights at Freddy's.

My character concept: Carolynn "Carrie" Croyle, human brawler. Easily-bored and excitable. Became an adventurer because she was bored with her commoner life. Loves martial arts, but was too impatient and impulsive to become a monk. Puts on a brave facade to mask her insecurities.

Since we're making Scooby Doo comparisons, I imagine her as being like a mix of Scrappy Doo and Shaggy. Eager to rush in fists flying, but doesn't deal with scary situations too well. Hopefully less annoying than Scrappy, as well.

What's the tone of the game we're going with? Is it horror-horror and very serious, or kind of goofy?

It would help me choose a concept :) I suppose The Goose wouldn't mesh well with a very serious tone!

Untitled Goose Game?

When I said scooby doo I was thinking more of an episodic kind of gameplay between modules. I would say it is set up more serious, not like the goblin games. But when you guys jump in the game plays out however your role play it.

Is there a gap in terms of class roles (martial, arcane, divine, rogue-ish, etc.) I should try to fill?

Jhaeman, I believe that with 6 players that we will need a less focus on filling all the roles and everyone playing what they’d like.

Supreveio has a human brawler
Coffee Dragon is cleric or Wizard if someone wants to play a cleric
Trawets71 is leaning Halfling or gnome sorcerer
Phillip maybe an investigator.

There is a lot of room in there

Philip here. Trevor is all ready to start sniffing out clues.

Oh one more thing. Feel free to have a craft or profession. I will be using downtime between modules for you to either make items or make extra money.

I've got Tobold all ready.

Hi. Coffee Dragon here.
Ghrael will be my Dwarf Cleric of Torag...currently under construction.

I have opened up the discussion thread. Let's go ahead and move over there so that this recruitment can fall towards the bottom since we are now past recruitment.
