Builds inspired by art

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I often just scroll art and find character art that inspires a build, and recently came across this: Image

I was thinking about making an Android necromancer/eldritch knight, but am curious what this might inspire in others. Post your builds or ideas!

Cheers

The only image that inspired me to create a character that I can clearly recall goes all the way back to 1985 when I based my Anti-Paladin on Blackie Lawless on the cover of W.A.S.P.'s "Last Command" album, but I do have a very large collection of fantasy-oriented images in a folder on my computer to use as inspiration. They cover everything from people, creatures, and locations. I have used the locations folder more often, but I've built many NPCs based on some of the artwork featuring human/humanoid subjects.

And by a totally weird coincidence my son just now sent me a link announcing W.A.S.P.'s first US Tour in over a decade and two stops aren't out of my "zone of rock" as far as traveling goes.

I've been inspired by song lyrics, random movie quotes, the plethora of characters from other games, plays, and film, and various board games, but I don't know that I've ever taken inspiration directly from a piece of art.

I'll have to ponder on this, but if nothing else, this might be a fun way for me to create my next character. Cheers for the idea!

My first D&D character’s name was Aragorn. So I probably use books I’ve read over the years as inspiration.

That particular picture is relatively close to how I imagine my Android Lich God... a Constructed Pugilist-Living Weapon Brawler gestalt with Crossblooded Sorcerer [using the Impossible and Nanite Bloodlines].

The capstone for the Impossible Bloodline turns you into a body of "clockwork gears, miniature galaxies, or something equally uncanny"... which is just awesome as an Android... Lich.

I haven't quite given him a good name, yet... he resides in my notes as T-616A "Omega", in my 51th Alien Robots folder. I chose T-616A, because T-####'s reminds me of Terminator. 616 is the same as 666, they both are a Hebrew gematric cypher for 'Nero Caesar'. Omega was the first model in the series, thus the A in his name... but he is also the last, thus why he goes by "Omega". And I chose 51th, because it looks like Sith [from Star Wars].

I also have an Android Constructed Pugilist Braswler gestalt with Golemfist Magus. And an Android Gunchemist Alchemist gestalt with Elritch Archer Magus, named Kellogg [from Fallout 4]. And an Android Living Weapon Brawler gestalt with Mindblade Magus, named Maul [also from Star Wars].

My Android Lich God, Omega, became a Lich and inserted his own phylactery into his own body... into the abyss of infinite impossibilities. He has since then convinced/forced other Liches to place their phylacteries into his body, which he uses as the eternal vault of Lich souls... both willing and not. With the addition of each new phylactery into himself, his power grows.

I haven't figured out how to represent that increase in power, yet. Maybe I should actually look at adding Mythic ranks, or whatever they are called. I know nothing about that system...

There's this song called Stormbringer, by Pagan Fury, that I really like and want to base a build around... I just haven't been able to piece a build together that I like as much as the song.

I also have several [half a dozen, or so] pictures saved that I am really lazily planning on attaching builds to. Mostly just Necromancers... I am always looking for new and interesting ways to build me a Necromancer. Although, I also really like helmets without eyeholes... so I have some Faceless Enforcer type builds I need to dive into to match the pictures I have saved.

That album cover is FANTASTIC!!

I was also thinking of an android lich build. I’d love to see what you did with that character. I was looking at an impossible blooded sorcerer just for that capstone too! Love the idea of combing phylacteries into the impossible depths of its body. The breakdown of that name is amazing too, love the thought you put into it all.

My files are bursting with images I’ve saved for inspiration, I’d say it’s my largest source of character builds, followed by media characters; such as marvel, dc, tv, video games, etc.

Silver Crusade

I almost always draw portraits of my characters, but rarely use existing art as my starting point. There is at least one notable exception: I own a t-shirt with a portrait of Joan of Arc drawn as a crow, which was part of a series of corvid versions of historical figures by the same artist (the guy who ran Ebon Aves). That art inspired a tengu cleric that I played in one game, and later my tengu cavalier in PFS. The latter would have been a paladin if I hadn't already had one in PFS.
