DemonSorrow Blade - dimensional anchor 60' rad (no save)

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Why is the 'no save' added to weapon description when the dimensional anchor spell itself has NO save already? Is it because it's an 'area' effect rather than a 'ray'?

Does the exclusion of any SR mention mean anything?

If demon SR is NOT overcome are they able to gate in reinforcements or does the SR roll take place for every attempt?

The no save is probably added just to be helpful, as a reminder that it has no save.

I didn't see it mention anywhere that it ignores spell resistance, so it doesn't. If a creature in the 60ft area has spell resistance the sword would have to make a caster level check (caster level unclear but it's usually the minimum caster level of the highest spell or requirement to make the item). This means it might fail against demons if they have SR.

The spell resistance roll is usually once per creature. But keep in mind it's the creature casting the spell. Though typically I think demons can only do one summon of a friend at a time, and not if they've been summoned themselves.

Thanks...wanted to make sure I was not missing something. Appreciate your post.

No problem, glad to help.

Just thought about something, I think it would be once per spell cast attempt and not per creature for rolling against SR as I previously said.

Primarily because you could cast several different spell against a creature in succession, and each would try to overcome SR independent of what happened previously.

However, the whole nature of turning a non-area spell into an area of effect is what's throwing me off here.

Effectively, the sword cast one continuous spell effect. The first time a creature comes into contact with it (I would go with per day but technically it would be the first time ever since the effect appears to be continuous unlimited duration) the sword would roll against the creatures spell resistance and that would determine if they are affected by the Dimensional Anchor effect.

It might be best to imagine it as the sword shooting out the Dimensional Anchor spell individually at any demon that comes within 60ft as a reaction/immediate action (that doesn't actually use reactions or immediate actions).

Check spell resistance only once for any particular casting of a spell or use of a spell-like ability. If spell resistance fails the first time, it fails each time the creature encounters that same casting of the spell. Likewise, if the spell resistance succeeds the first time, it always succeeds. If the creature has voluntarily lowered its spell resistance and is then subjected to a spell, the creature still has a single chance to resist that spell later, when its spell resistance is back up.

From what I see, the Dimensional Anchor effect of the sword is always active (barring things like someone casting Dispel Magic on the weapon to suppress its power temporarily). So, considering the above text, every demon checks his SR once in a lifetime and it is necessary to keep a list of the affected demons. It is a very fringe case, so I had to check the text of the ability.

That opens some interesting scenarios, like someone planting the sword in the ground in a location to keep a specific demon from fleeing a prison.
With the PCs taking away the sword and freeing him. ;-)
