What does a Psychic do outside of combat?

Psychic Class

I'm really, really struggling to see what this class contributes the rest of the time in play.

More seriously, the same question for the other casters?

* Using wands and scrolls to cast lower level utility spells when needed
* If emotional, you might take the lead in social encounters with diplomacy, deception and intimidation
* If logical, you might investigate and know stuff with Recall Knowledge and a lot of skills.

This is likely the most direct answer with skill feats mingled in. Much akin to any class, their out of combat potential lies along their attribute focus and skill feats

Casters have expanded possibilities outside combat. Scouting with Prying Eyes, casting utility spells like Water Breathing or Spider Climb and so on.

Due to their limited spell slots, Psychic have less out of combat utility. But they are still more useful than many martials who just have their skills (and often a very limited bunch of them) to contribute outside combat.

Yeah, many classes don't really have that many exploration mode class features, so I'm not too worried on that front.

Your class should be defining what you do in combat anyway.

Out of combat, skills and skill feats should be defining what you do. So its more a question of what do you want to do? You can practically specialise in any skill set except strength without hampering your combat abilities (although strength can also be done if you AT champion for heavy.)

I wonder if a middle ground suggesting to the point on spell slots is to give them an extra spell that has to be the one based on their conscious mind . Like old domain spells. Less flexibility ?

Perhaps not quote the place to put this but spell slots were mentioned above re: out of combat

Incidentally I have rarely seen spell slots used for out of combat stuff. They are usually held back for combat unless you really know you are going to need and prepare something. So the water breathing example is a good one here

But even then my group tried to find scrolls first. I guess it depends on magic item shop access as well

They are not wave casters, and they do get 2 slots of lower level spells. The infinite eye psychic ends up a pretty stellar divine with minimal item investment (hello staff of divination and scrolls).

The problem with making amps good out of combat is the psychic can use them over and over again with their supercharged refocus abilities. If the had amps like non-combat focus spells, they would dominate exploration mode

Given the level 1 feat that gives you a bonus to charisma checks when under the effects of a mental spell or after having cast one that round, you can get a pretty good bonus to social skills depending on your subconscious mind.

Outside of that, they don't have great out of combat utility. Would it be a problem to suggest that one of the cantrips given by each conscious mind have an out of combat usability? Yes, take care that it's not a problem if it's spammed, with the realization that if you trigger combat there's a chance that one can walk into combat with less than full focus points. I feel few other classes would be willing to wait for regular focus point refilling without combat, making the chances to spam out of combat amps and still having in combat amps available without Unleashing less likely.
