A list of Metamagic Spell combinations

Advice

1 person marked this as a favorite.

As I am researching building a decent Battlefield control wizard I have noticed something.

Often spells are suggested, and then metamagic feats are suggested

But what spells to use metamagic with is severly lacking.

I thought it would be good if we started a list of combinations that we like or we think are good. This sort of means Quicken Spell won't be on this list but it should be noted that it is really good

My list

  • Ball Lightning + Dazing Spell
  • Persistant Spell + Forbid Action, Greater

Persistent glitterdust
Persistent grease
Persistent hold person
Apocalyptic fireball
Apocalyptic color spray
Lingering color spray
Lingering burst of radiance
Fleeting create pit (etc.)
Fleeting entangle
Fleeting wall of whatever
Dazing acid arrow
Dazing burning gaze (best if shared with a familiar)
Dazing silent image (disbelieve me I dare you)
Dazing whip of spiders
Dazing {any damage over time, or repeated attack spell}
- note that dazing spell is notoriously overpowered, especially when the spell level increase is reduced or avoided
Rime frost fall
Rime ice slick
Rime frostbite
Rime frigid touch (load into spell storing armor)
Rime elemental touch
Trick daze
Trick aphasia
Authoritative deja vu
Authoritative dispel magic
Empowered mirror image
Empowered ray of enfeeblement
Empowered touch of gracelessness
Empowered touch of idiocy

Just as an aside, quickened true strike, quickened sure casting, quickened obscuring mist and quickened vanish are some striking uses of quickened spell. I'm not sure why you wouldn't mention them.

Lingering + Rime + Cold Ice Strike... the fact it's a swift action to cast is awesome... making it Lingering makes that swift action stick around for a whole round... and it has the cold descriptor, so we might as well Entangle everyone for 6rnds while we are at it.

The whole mess can be cheated down to its original level with those stupid traits, too.

The Exchange

Persistent + anything with negative conditions
Dazing + anything
Persistent + Dazing + anything

Extend any buff with a long-duration.
Apocalyptic Spell with anything that entangles.
Brisk Spell, no down side aside from the cost of the feat.
Conditional Spell has SO MANY role playing possibilities.
Seeking Spell could be great for a spell-sniper build.
Solid Shadows is a must for any of the 'Shadow' spells.
We could go on?

Quickened Toppling Magic Missile
Toppling Dazing Battering Blast
Persistant Extended Command Undead (w/ Undead Master Feat) = Save Twice and 3 days/level
Quickened True Strike + Empowered or Maximized Enervation
Quickened True Strike + Persistent Disintegration
Quickened True Strike + Reach Touch of Idiocy (400ft +40ft/lvl Ranged Touch Attack at 5th lvl slot)
Persistent Heightened Beguiling Gift w/ Cursed Items: Necklace of Strangulation, Dust of Choking and Sneezing, or Scarab of Death
Fleeting Reverse Gravity
Empowered Spell Turning

(ꙨပꙨ) if I had a nickle for every metamagic wish...

most of them are fairly obvious. It also depends on what kind of caster you have (school, etc), character build, and how many feats they can dedicate to metamagics. Given that, there are a plethora of fair to poor choices and you have to work within the character build to find synergy.
Reach, Persistent, Dazing, Quickened, Intensified, Bouncing are all good options.

The challenge my players always seem to run into is weighing the level increase against the potential outcome. If you're going to level increase a spell by 2 levels, would it be better casting something with a lower save but a cool special effect tacked on or a single spell effect with a higher save?

For NPCs I like the Tenebrous Spell metamagic. 2 of my 3 games are in dungeons and for some reason my PCs never cast Dancing Lights or long distance Light descriptor spells, so take a spell a villain can cast at Medium range, like Doom or something, have them hide and cast said spell and add +1 to the DC and the CL for a +1 level adjustment.

from my Witch

Quickened Ill Omen with a Persistent Feeble Mind can take out a spellcaster before they get a go.
Persistent suffocation is always funny
Persistent Midfog, with any thing that stops movement
Reach Heal, Breath of Life, Cures etc
Reach Teleport. Get the party out of trouble when all at short/med range
Persistent, Reach flesh Worm Infestation
Quickened Barrow haze. Blocks all vision except yours before any get a chance to splat you
Reach Bestow curse
Quickened Mirror Image
Reach Touch of Idiocy
Intensified Snowball
