New AP: Quest for the Frozen Flame

Pathfinder Adventure Path General Discussion

12 days ago starfinder develop Jason Tondro revealed (likely be accident) that the next AP is titled "Quest for the Frozen Flame" on this interview. He claims it has a product page on this website (which it does not), and says that Patrick Reney is the AP's developer. Besides that and the fact that Tondro is writing one of the volumes we know nothing.

Credit to u/DragonCalypso on the r/pathfinder2e discord for the catch, its not something I would ever have watched so nice catch to him.

What it could be about I have no idea. Best guess is something in the Saga Lands, like the realm of the mammoth lords, land of the linnorm kings, or more excitingly something in the crown of the world. Hopefully its not another Irrisen AP.

Honestly I'm kind of disappointed, I was really hoping for that Alkenstar/Geb/Nex AP that people here have been talking about forever, but hopefully this will be interesting too. we'll see.

I was really hoping that Alkenstar writeup was a sign we were getting an Impossible Lands AP. Mammoth Lords would be kind of a weird pull, given that all the LOWG really had to say about it was “giants,” so I wouldn’t imagine it’s that.

Does it specifically get called out as Pathfinder and not Starfinder?

A Frozen Flame doesn't strictly imply a cold locale. A Frozen Flame could seem quite magical if the setting is still Nex!

Starfinder?

Its true now that you mention it that its never specifically cited as a pathfinder AP. As mentioned above it was found by a member of the pathfinder2e subreddit and posted there, so I assumed there was some evidence that it was for pathfinder, but on a second watch I don't see anything. Regardless the name has a much more pathfinder feeling than a starfinder one, but I suppose it could be either. I guess we'll wait and see, it will probably be announced at Paizocon.

Probably Starfinder then, as Tondro is a Starfinder guy, no?

If that's Starfinder AP, move this thread to be better. Waiting staff's answer.

lol, this seems like a sneaky way to find out which it is. I love it.

He is but that doesn't necessarily rule in either direction, starfinder people have written pathfinder APs and vice-versa previously. More I think it about it probably is starfinder though, just because of how much the alkenstar AP has been hinted at.

No comment, other than:

I will point out that we often make big announcements for upcoming Adventure Paths at Paizocon, which is only a month away!

They write for each other, since writing is a freelance gig and outside the scope of their normal duties, but wouldn't make sense to be a developer on a different line.

Everflame / Frozen Flame

Could be the same thing. A frozen flame is burning for ever. They could finally get that published without "conflicting" the previous streams.

If it's PF I bet on that.

But I watched the stream now and it was a SF stream.

EDIT: So my logic is this. 1) they had everflame stream. 2) covid made them stop. 3) they want to finish it but restarting now would be weird. 4) they make something else to stream their new stuff soon. 5) they rename everflame as frozen flame, finish it, and get it into an AP.

A call back to Crypt of the Everflame would def tick some boxes regarding sequels, building on existing content, a call back to the heritage of PF1 (Everflame was the the very first published PF1E module).

It would also fill the requests for a Razmir AP. Everflame was Nirmathas + Razmir, so presumably we would start by building on the outcomes of Ironfang Invasion and then migrate over to "do" Razmir.

Interesting hypothesis, even if completely wrong! :-)

Looks like this turned out to be true, and its set in the Realm of the Mammoth Lords. Its only 3 volumes, from January to March, ostensibly 1st-10th like AbV.

Tenner bets the next AP is a three part high level Geb focused campaign. We have SoM for Nex, G&G for Alkenstar and Book of the Dead for Geb by then. And the impossible kingdoms are a high level kind of region.

I kind of doubt they would put out 3 tied-in hard-covers just to have it be a 3-part AP. I think it must be the late-2022 6-part AP.

Finally my Kellid peeps getting some love!

I'm hoping this will have a trial balloon for community-building rules to eventually end up in an Ultimate Campaign-like hardback.

I feel like a Geb AP would feel weird if it wasn’t the “Geb and Nex go to war” one, and that plot feels long enough in the foreshadowing that I would expect a full 6 volume one.

I think this is more likely.

Schedules can always slip. Agents of Edgewatch launched Aug 2020 (and is now complete), but the Absalom book won't be arriving till late 2021.

Waiting a bit until the Geb/Nex/Alkenstar AP ensures that all of the hardcovers are out and in peoples hands before the AP drops. There is enough hype around it, that a 6-parter would seem more likely IMO.

One of my favorite side-effects of doing 3-part Adventure Paths is that it gives us the flexibility and chance to do an Adventure Path that DOESN'T tie to other products. Adventure Paths are already one of the hardest things we do, and it's almost like a vacation when we get to one that doesn't require coordination between multiple other projects.

Super excited for this ap, has it been stated anywhere what the lvl range is for it? Personally hoping for 1-10 again.

It's a 1st to 10th or so. Not sure where the end level is aimed at, but thereabouts, yup!

This sounds fairly exploration/survival-y, in a region I’m already not all that fond of, so I don’t think it’s for me. I hope other folks enjoy it!

I like it!!

Coolness. Up to 10th feels like it could reasonably have megafauna in, which is one of the primary appeals to me of that part of Golarion.

I actually do like the sound of it. I'm running Agents of Edgewatch now, but in a year or so, I'll need a new AP, and having been inside a city for so long, it will be good to have a pure wilderness adventure on offer. Stretch our legs so to speak.

Plus I like the idea of a 3 volume AP. But I want plot rather than a big dungeon crawl, and I prefer 1-10 rather than 11-20, so Vaults and Ruby Phoenix don't do it for me. Frozen Flame gives me a nice way to try the 3 volume approach.

I think the level 10 cap will work well for a survival/exploration focused game. Much higher than 7th or 8th, and the ability for the environment to threaten without being something overwhelming to the NPCs you’re supposedly leading gets strained.

Granted, if there’s any terrestrial environments that can be a credible challenge to heroes of that level, it’s the Realm of the Mammoth lords.

During Gen Con, Paizo premiered this image from this AP:

Unfortunately, I can't find it in anything higher than this tiny 260x194 resolution. Any chance someone at Paizo can give us a little higher resolution? I need it because I run 4 groups on a videogame-style overworld, and I put the APs there for the groups to choose from. I know release is months away, but my players are excited to see new APs pop up on the overworld, and so am I...

The same image was shown at PaizoCon as well - maybe look there? I remember they said this character was an axe-wielding Magus.

I am also pretty sure they said she is a major villain if not the BBEG

these short APs for Pathfinder are great. We did Against the Aeon Throne for Starfinder [only went to level 6], and it was fantastic. We wrapped it in a few months, it had a tight, focused plot, and let players try out character concepts knowing that they wouldn't be bound to that PC for years... plus the DM got to put down the pencil after just a few months and someone else picked it up.

Big fan of these shorter APs.
