I'll throw on Inquisitor. They have a lot of skills, they have divine spell casting with a lot of utility and healing/remove spells, and class features that make them formidable in martial pursuits.
They've also got that summoning archetype that's pretty good. And with 5 Inquisitors with teamwork feats there's bound to be some wild shenanigans they can pull off.
A ton of Inquisitors have pretty much every skill or ability you need to steamroller the Kingmaker PC game, at the early levels. (I made ranged characters with bows, and used the Archetype that came with an animal companion, so the critters kind of waltzed in and we healed, shot arrows and threw alchemicals from behind).

I would go for clerics.
At low-level they can hold their own in melee and healing and status effects won’t be a challenge.
Someone would have to take the right build for traps but it can be done.
An animal domain herald caller with boon companion could provide for mid-level melee front line needs.
Have one with solid int and breadth of experience for all of your knowledge needs.

I definitely stand by the general assessment of Inquisitors.
That said, I think many 6th level spell progression classes can fit the bill of the original question of "what class make a great 5 man party?"
6th level spell progression classes tend to have skill points, utility spells, and martial capabilities all in one package. You start packing in some archetypes and you've probably got a lot of options available to dominate the enemy.

how can everyone not have mentioned Alchemist?
I have played in a group of 4 Bards (very different Archetypes and actually very balanced with diverse abilities).
but I have also played in a group of all Alchemist - two friends and I run a team of 3 ... each a different element race (Ifrit, Oread, Sylph) we were "Earth, Wind and Fire"...
Our Tank is Earth (Beastmorph w/Feral Mutigen, and boosted strength)
Our Rogue & Healing skills is Wind (Crypt Breaker/Chirurgeon alchemist)
and I'm the Face (Grenadier with lots of social skills).
We all can do healing (wands mostly) and we all have bombs for ranged energy damage, and Extracts for spells... and lots of skill points (being Int based PCs...).
(We used to have an Undine to join us, but he doesn't play anymore... he's "all wet")
We've played this group in PFS up thru 10th level (so the Chirurgeon got Breath of Life), and they seem to work pretty well at all the levels up to there. Each very much unique and very much part of the team...

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
I think my caravan of little gypsies could do it... all Bards VMC'ed with something else... take your pick, however many you want your party to be...
Arcane Healer-Geisha Bard VMC Monk has pretty much infinite Bardic Performance/Channel/Ki/spell slots with the Tea of Transference and Ki Channel... which is used to scribe lots of scrolls. She is a Resourceful Halfling, uses Shikigami Style, and sports the entire Monks Robe/Wraps/Necklace Irori set.
You won't find the Halfling without her loving partner in crime, the Fortune Teller Bard VMC Sorcerer (Harrow Bloodline). A Charming Diviner Gnome, that spends levels 11-20 in the Harrower PrC. She draws from a Silent Aviary deck for fun and profit. Whatever she may see coming through her divinations, the group can plan for with a tea party to pregame.
Flame Dancer-Flamesinger Bard VMC Sorcerer (Groveborn/Verdant Bloodline). An emo Treeborn Gathlain pyromaniac focused on summoning and Eversmoking Bottle shenanigans.
Sandman Bard VMC Rogue... a Grippli that can steal others' spells with his tongue, like a frog snatching flies from the air.
Archeologist Bard VMC Cavalier (Order of the Whip). A Lashvine Leshy with the Prehensile Whip trait... he wears a fedora and hates snakes.
Arcane Duelist VMC Fighter. Another Treeborn Gathlain, older male sibling and bodyguard to the emo pyromaniac... he uses a Longspear with the Banner of Ancient Kings hanging from it.
Chronicler of Worlds-Studious Librarian VMC Alchemist... of course it's a Goblin, what other Bard would use Bombs? Makes a killer red Tea with a hint of wine flavor, a favorite of the Geisha's.
There's more... like a metamagic/Sacred Geometry specialist Magician VMC Sorcerer (Arcane Bloodline)... all small races, too...

To expand on this a little bit... they are all pretty much designed to be Cohorts... without designing some murderhobo partner, or someone to help crafting break the game... a plethora of valuable abilities/features/skills already built... pick your flavor from the Cohort Caravan...
The Halfling Arcane Healer-Geisha VMC Monk has an older brother, Halfling Dervish of Dawn-Songhealer VMC Paladin of Sarenrae... he is literally always there to protect his sister and her partner [the Fortune Teller]. Whatever she cannot heal, he can... she just has to keep him alive... yet, he is her protector... gypsies are wierd like that...
The point is, Bards don't get a lot of extra feats, so VMC hurts... being Small doesn't make it any easier... but I am relatively confident that a party picked entirely from my Caravan of Compact Cohorts could make it through most AP's...

all this is nice if you can take one class and each party member pick a different archtype. but i got a pick for a case where everyone has to also take the same archtype.
Calamity caller warpriest (as it's elf only class, you'd need to be elf,half-elf or something like human with racial heritage(elf). )
by itself it already give all armors, most shields, simple and martial weapons. good buffs\debuffs, healing and the archtype's blasting ability.
with the right traits and feats some can be the party's face while others deal with the knowledge checks. for trapper you can pick the Monitor Obedience of the Psychopomp Usher Imot, (thx Theaitetos)
this way the entire party is a bunch of doom prophets yelling " the end is Nee!"
