Skillful Lessons and Archetype "Skill Feats"

Background

Investigators have the Skillful Lessons feature.

APG, 59 wrote:
At 3rd level and every odd-numbered level thereafter, you gain a skill feat. This feat must be for an Intelligence-, Wisdom-, or Charisma-based skill, or for the skill you gained from your methodology.

The CRB and APG both have tables showing the skill feats that use each skill so it's easy to figure out which ones you can take with Skillful Lessons.

But...

Archetypes can have feats that are selected in place of skill feats rather than in place of class feats.

CRB, p. 219 wrote:
Occasionally, an archetype feat works like a skill feat instead of a class feat. These archetype feats have the skill trait, and you select them in place of a skill feat, otherwise following the same rules above.

There is no chart listing which skill is associated with each of these feats.

Question

I'm wondering whether Skillful Lessons can be used to select archetype feats with the Skill Trait, and I can see three possibilities.

1.) Skillful Lessons works with ALL of these feats.
The archetype "skill feats" aren't really skill feats and aren't associated with any particular skills. So the usual restrictions on Skillful Lessons don't apply, and you can use those skill feat slots to select any of the archetype "skill feats."

2.) Skillful Lessons works with NONE of these feats.
The archetype "skill feats" aren't really skill feats and aren't associated with any particular skills. So the requirements of Skillful Lessons can't be satisfied, and you can't use those skill feat slots to select any of the archetype "skill feats."

3.) Skillful Lessons works with SOME of these feats.
The archetype "skill feats" act just like all other skill feats, and you can only select the ones that meet the requirements from Skillful Lessons.

That last one could be difficult to implement without clarification. Sometimes the archetype feats give you a clue as to what the associated skill might be. For example, the Steel Skin feat from the Sentinel Archetype has "trained in Survival" as a prerequisite. While not definitive, that suggests that this is a Wis-based "skill feat." But the same archetype also has the Armor Specialist feat which doesn't mention any skills at all.

I'm hoping that I've missed a rule somewhere, but it's possible that this interaction never occurred to the developers. Any clarifications or analysis from the community would be appreciated.

Is it ALL, NONE, or SOME?

Some.

The text of Skillful Lessons is very clear that it can only be used on Skill Feats associated with certain Abilities. Skill Feats not associated with such an Ability cannot be selected.

That said, some Archetype Skill Feats are associated with specific Skills (such as Holistic Care, under Medic, which is a Diplomacy Feat).

And this is not hard to implement at all. You just look at the Skill Feat in question. If it says it requires an Int, Wis, or Cha based Skill then it's a Feat for said Skill, and if not it isn't. Simple.

Agree with DMW. Looking at a skill, seeing what kinds of skills it requires and/or effects and go from there.

That sounds good to me. Using that standard, I've gone through the APG archetypes, and come up with the following breakdown.

Acrobat
Graceful Leaper - Acrobatics (Dex)

Archaeologist
Settlement Scholastics - Lore (Int)
Scholastic Dedication - Society (Int)

Cavalier
Quick Mount - Nature (Wis)

Dandy
Distracting Flattery - Deception (Cha)
Fabricated Connections - Deception (Cha)
Party Crasher - Society (Int)

Gladiator
Fancy Moves - Performance (Cha)

Herbalist
Fresh Ingredients - Nature (Wis)

Horizonwalker
Sure Foot - Acrobatics (Dex) and Athletics (Str)

Linguist
Multilingual Cipher - Society (Int)
Phonetic Training - Society (Int)
Analyze Idiolect - Deception (Cha) and Society (Int)
Read Shibboleths - Society (Int)

Loremaster
Orthographic Mastery - Lore (Int)

Medic
Treat Condition - Medicine (Wis)
Holistic Care - Diplomacy (Cha)

Pirate
Rope Runner - Acrobatics (Dex) and Athletics (Str)

Ritualist
Resourceful Ritualist - Arcana (Int), Nature (Wis), Occultism (Int), or Religion (Wis)

Scrounger
Reverse Engineering - Crafting (Int)
Expert Disassembly - Crafting (Int)

Sentinel
Steel Skin - Survival (Wis)
Armor Specialist - None

Vigilante
Hidden Magic - Arcana (Int), Nature (Wis), Occultism (Int), or Religion (Wis)
Subjective Truth - Deception (Cha)

It appears that only three don't use any mental stats, and it turns out that only one has no mention of skills at all. (That was the one that started me down this road. I wonder if Armor Specialist having the Skill Trait is a typo.)

Other people have speculated that Armor Specialist having the Skill trait is an error before, basically because it doesn't act much like a Skill Feat. That seems very possible, honestly.

I've made an errata note for armor specialist. Thanks all.

Thanks, Mark! That clears a lot up. And thanks to Schreckstoff for the list of archetypes with skill feats. I've expanded the list of archetypes and made a few corrections.

As Blave suggested, why not add an Atletics requirement

I kind of agree: it's hard to say what looks like a skill feat. Hefty Hauler is a skill feat for athletics after all and it has absolutely nothing to do with a skill or doing anything skillfully. "You can carry more than your frame implies" doesn't imply any more skill than Armor Specialist's "You have trained hard to optimize your armor's protective qualities". IMO, at least Armor Specialist is training where Hefty Hauler just... is.
