Being a Horizon Walker because you want to be a Planeswalker

Advice

I just wanted to ask around if anyone has used the Horizon Walker Prestige Class recently, but NOT for a dip to help with the Dimensional Agility feat chain, and instead because of the possibilities/advantages it offers when plane hopping/travelling - was it worth it?

Did it make for a decent Planar Survivalist/Guide Character, or would there be other, better options?

Haven't used it that way but planar travellers want more magic than a horizon walker can easily supply. There's a lot of environmental conditions that you want spells for.

Besides the obvious full spellcasters, hunters can get life bubble and similar at levels low enough to be useful. If you're operating out of Sigil a portal guide investigator would be handy to have.

The funnest "Plane Hopper/Survivalist" character I played was a Nomad Psion(3rd party/Dreamscarred Press). He was a Fetchling with the Umbral Escort racial so he could take people with him on a shadowwalk.

Horizon Walker always felt to me being too locked into a few planes to warrant the title.

Thanks for the feedback guys - it is a shame though. I realize the Horizon Walker is a bit of an outdated PrC, but it does lend itself to planewalking/hopping in concept:

How cool is that? Sad that it does not translate into the classes' actual capabilities.

Portal Seeker Investigator is a nice idea for The City of Doors, but then once you cross into the other plane, the Investigator (one of my favorite classes mind you) seems to offer nothing 'extra'

I haven't played a character with Psionic abilities since the Dark Sun boxed set came out, but the shadowwalk is a cool idea. But I am more looking for versatility, knowledge and capability to navigate extreme environments, stuff like that.

I wonder if there is a Druid archetype that would make sense...

Well in my part if I want to create a planeswalker I will get the prestige class from the manual of planes d&d 3 edition. Divine agent, gatecrasher, planar champion and planeshifter do a great with this kind of game

Have you looked at the Aethernaut class from City of 7 Seraphs? I'm making a npc to get my team to the Ether plane. It's pretty cool with lots of lore.

Wow doc Chaos, thank you for sharing that. What an amazingly interesting and diverse class.

Even if I might get lost among so many moving parts, I really like the concept and mechanics.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Flagged the obvious spam post, it must have caught onto the word Walker.

Since the thread is alive [again], I might as well throw the Chronicler of Worlds Bard into the mix for planes-walkers...

They get Planar Lore and Quintessence Infusion, the last of which is a Performance designed specifically to help a party adapt to changing planes.
