Awarding hero points for out of game apparel.

Pathfinder Society

Saw a Facebook post where a GM was talking about leeway to hand out Hero Points and that if he saw anyone where a particular item he would award them a point. Just wondering if this is something actually allowed to happen or should there be more going on with a hero point award.

Probably a misconception due to the fact that in 1st edition you gained a reroll for apparel.

However, in pfs2e, apparel is considered a promotional boon, takes a boon slot, and gives just a +1 bonus to you when you spend a hero point to reroll.

I like that, but yeah this was clearly person sits at my table wearing X I'm giving them a hero point because GMs have that discretion.

You give out Hero Points at an average rate of 1 per hour. There doesn't have to be much reason as long as it's fair. It could be random. Picking your first player to award in the first hour based on wearing purple could be totally fair. Giving them all to the person wearing purple is not fair. A six-player table means 2 players won't get a hero point. Certain achievements allow players to give out hero points to other players at the start of a session; there's no guidance on how they pick.

Hero points can be a bit tricky, while I think that giving a free one just based on apparel is not something that is reasonable - as Tommi mentioned we have the boon for that - the scenarios these days often have reminders on for GMs to actually give them out, but that's about it.

I can see GMs finding reasons to give out more based on the actions of the PCs at the table, but that is not something a player should be able to affect based on their apparel.

In this edition of the game, GMs have a bit more power when it comes to things like this, and I can certainly see good arguments that every player at the table should have the chance to get a hero point, but diverting too much from that "1 hero point per player per game" assumption can cause problems.

That said, I had plenty of tables where most players started with 2-3 hero points since we had a lot of GMs, campaign coin holders, and some with a certain advanced boon - and the max number of hero points you can have is 3 unless I am mistaken.

I replied to that post. It was a comment about the Paizo Pride Pin.

My comment was that for 2e the pin would qualify for the Promotional Accessory, which lessens the severity of frightened or stupefied. for one 1e it would give a re-roll like a t-shirt.

I think the Facebook poster liked the pin. IF they wanted to give a hero point during the adventure because of it they can. They just could give it at the beginning of the adventure.

Yes, max is 3 hero points and you can't get a hero point from the same source more once. Like GM gylph or from a heroic action during play.

Handing out Hero Points for apparel is really unfair to those of us who play naked.

You can make up for it by having a collage of Paizo promotional items tattooed on your back
