Ghibrani are legal with a capstone boon.
I thought the legacy races were update to all being legal with the new season guide. At least that's what I have been telling people.
They are.
Can't remember where, but there was also a Blog post about it, if memory serves.
Also, can't seem to be able to open it up with Open Office, any suggestions on what method to use to open it?

Should have explained better I guess. Yes, the legacy races are all legal, but if you DO have a boon, you get a stat boost, which is what the "plus boon" meant. I'll change it to "Boon Bonus"
I've got all the columns set up with filters, which might be why Open Office regects it. I could post a version without the filters I suppose.

For what it's worth, I am aware of Chronicles allowing you to play:
- Anassanoi
- Kish
- Stellifera
- Osharu
And there's other boons allowing you to play:
- aasimar
- tiefling
- barathu (this one was time locked and isn't possible anymore though I think)
- osharu (you can get this one via boon or chronicle)
- pahtra
- bantrid (I think anyways; don't have one personally)
- ghoran

*shrug* Just like living in large community, playing in large community comes with its drawbacks. Some people can handle forsaking options for the sake of playing and some cannot. It is not for everyone and there's nothing wrong with that.
AND
Scenarios can be played without playing in society. The whole thing could be played campaign style.
Fun Fact!

You don't actually need a spreadsheet for this.
Some people WANT a spreadsheet to know what races are available.
You could, you know, just play the game and find out what races you can play as you go.
Like, the current "base" options are... well after Character Operations Manual and the Izalguun blog, they're enormous. You can play one of the core book races with a huge variety of alternate traits. You don't even really need to play a weird boon race.
The weird boon races aren't even significantly more powerful than the core book stuff... some I'd say are way LESS powerful, even.
"But Drac," you say, "You have twelve SFS characters and only three core book race characters, you have no leg to stand on here!" Well, that is true, I like the weird stuff... but I never needed to go looking for weird stuff to play, because SFS is incredibly generous with race boons, both for GMing and as a result of normal play.
If your friends got into SFS they would find themselves able to play new kinds of aliens sooner or later.

When I started the spreadsheet, tracking boons wasn't a part of it. The most important was the descriptor column. Then there was another column (and on my own copy, still is) on if I could (Easily / Difficultly / Not At All) make such a race using my 3d modeling art program. That helped for picking races for my Wayfinder art submissions.
Soon after, I was making my vanguard and my biohacker. I knew I wanted a dex-based acrobat, and was envisioning a gnome vanguard, but had no idea what I wanted for the biohacker. So I added the attribute columns. I set a filter for Artable, then +dex or +con for the vanguard and investigated the races left. For the biohacker I filtered for Artable and +int, then added +dex and evaluated. At this point for both I realized I needed the boons column and added it in. The vanguard did indeed turn out to be a driftborn gnome, while the biohacker became a Kiirinta.

Obviously the limits BNW. At least be a little more subtle about trolling.

Playing the odds and assuming the problem is getting the race people want...
SFS is a lot more open in terms of getting access to the cantina than Pathfinder was (especially early on pathfinder). Races can fairly commonly be open by a scenario or a boon.
Its also a lot easier to trade for a raceboon than PFS was: the race boons are more common and the player boons seem a bit better, so player for race is a hard but doable trade.
And "hey i really want to be an X...." is also a lot easier to hand to a new player.
Online conventions also make it a lot easier to dm . its pretty easy to use a ready made table to run a game. With the current situation, meatspace conventions have gone online and sometimes need another dm or two.

My counter: Might you feel awesome when you get a race boon because other people don't have access to that race?
Er, no. What kind of monster do you think I am?
I feel awesome because the new race opens up new, weird, fringe playstyles I might not have considered before.
It feels even more awesome when I help someone else get a race boon, like when I run a scenario that provides one, or give away my GM boon to a player who has been wanting a particular race.
Scarcity makes certain game options feel more valuable, even if they, largely, are not technically much better than other options.

My 'counter' to Dr. Cupi's counter:
I actually feel a bit dirty when I'm playing a Boon character and someone says/asks "Hey, that's pretty neato, how do *I* get to play one?"
...and it took some GM work and negotiation via the forums to trade for the character I was playing.
Trying to explain that to a new player is... problematic.

I admit I would love to play a barathu sometime just because the floating amuses me, but I don't think I have anything good to trade for one right now.

"I feel awesome because the new race opens up new, weird, fringe playstyles I might not have considered before."
New races opening up could just come with the advent of a new published source material. Just the same as the additional resources. This 'awesomeness' is not dependent on races being limited.
"It feels even more awesome when I help someone else get a race boon, like when I run a scenario that provides one, or give away my GM boon to a player who has been wanting a particular race."
So...because of good feelings is why the playable races should be limited?
"Scarcity makes certain game options feel more valuable..."
'Scarcity' = "other people don't have"
So...Might it feel awesome when one gets a race boon because other people don't have access to that race?
Er, no. What kind of monster do you think I am?
There's nothing wrong with enjoying a unique option which other people do not have access because other people do not have access. I am merely arguing the point
Why do races have to be locked behind boons? Why can't they just become playable with the rest of the book with additional resources?

Okay, I'll level with you.
I'm no Paizo representative, but if I were, I would consider the cantina feel to be one of the key draws to my game and that capturing and maintaining interest in the game might be assisted by getting people to work toward exploiting the fun new races.
It's not exactly microtransactions, but every interactive experience benefits from a draw, or a prize that people find worthwhile. Your own argument here is that people really like the races; that makes them a worthwhile prize/draw.
It's not even that exclusionary. There are twice as many freely available races out there than there were at the start, and GMs are often eager to run the scenarios that provide the race boons. Frequent GMs often get so many race boons from running at conventions that they don't think anything of trading them away for a pittance (or nothing).
So I'm not sure what you want, here. The system works, but you want it to be even more permissive, potentially to the detriment of the business model. I for one am not going to gainsay Paizo having an effective long-term draw to their game.
"Dr." Cupi |
That is what I wanted, a reasonable reason for the question of why. I already suspected as much but decided to dig until this answer came out. I did this because this should be the answer from the get go. It is what I tell people when they ask me. I would encourage everyone else to start with this too. I do not think there is any shame in this. Paizo is a business. Anyone who would shame Paizo for it is in some way delusional.
Start with this simple fact and then build on it with everything else that was presented. There are a myriad of ways to get access to different races. The most common one is to just play. The scenario structure of SFS is such that you will need to build multiple characters. So playing a base race as your first character will very likely get you access to a different one before you build your second.

Damai as well. I have 2 Race Boons for it, plus there's now a Scenario boon for them.
And GMs can distribute them too. No reason to sit on them like a dragon on a hoard.

You can dislike how something is handled and not shame.
I considered not responding, but saw an opportunity to fix an understanding.
They are not mutually exclusive. This means that it is possible to have one without the other. Before making statements in the future I encourage all to consider whether you may be falsely conflating things.

...you were trolling... for educational purposes?
Would have just been faster and more honest to state what you know right away.
Regardless of your intentions, being disingenuous on the internet makes it objectively a worse place. This isn't a living room with friends where context and subtle intonation or nonverbal cues can tell us that you're just playing devil's advocate.
So, how about them spreadsheets?

It's uncanny that, last October, there was a thread trying to compile the list of available species boons, which inspired me to also make a thread proposing we change how species boons are handled to open them up more.
I'm sure my little entry is this cycle was far from the first, and there's someone who could post the same story a few months prior to mine, and so on, and so on.
Just a bit of history repeating. Can't wait to see this thread again in a few months, lol :D (no snark meant - the fact that this keeps coming up, over and over, and across systems, is proof that this continues to be a barrier that people run up against, over and over. The more it comes up, the more it is likely to effect change.)

That wasn't what I meant.
Paper boons are handed out at in-person Conventions.
If you can't attend one, then protesting AcP is going to give you *less* boon options.
