Pathfinder 2e Videogame


Video Games


So I have been playing pathfinder kingmaker and it is a gloriously mess it faithfully adapts the over the top mechanics of the pathfinder to a ice wind Dale style setup.

But what it did do is make me think about how a pathfinder 2e game would play out.

My gut reaction is that pathfinder 2e is utterly unsuited to becoming a crpg that the choices to simplify things from 1e would make it a bit lackluster for the more tactical and victory focused minds of Videogamers what do you think?

I think 2e combat speaks more to the tactical mind since you have more options IN play.

Since many things is more structured (class structure, elements of feats/items/creatures..) it might be more suited as CRPG presentation.

But I think it will take some years for a 2e CRPG to appear. Owlcat games have just gotten all the PF1 stuff together, they probably want to use that for a while. :)

gimme a x-com combat grid and pf2 rules on top of it anyday

but yeah, its still very early for a pc game, even though it would be awesome


The thing that brought me to playing Kingmaker was the ability to build a ton of characters and finish Kingmaker after I unfortunately had to drop the table campaign years ago.
The thing that keeps making me log off is that I saved right before a late game levelup. I'm quite likely to start yet another new game (plenty of new concepts I want to try), but I tend to drop them eventually.

Pathfinder 2 on a videogame, with turn-based mechanics and a good grid? Yes please.

Yeah pf2 would have to be a turn based game. Which is fine as I find all the realtime conversions of turn based games to be janky at best.

I'm reminded of the gold box D&D series for the C64 back in the 80s. Azure Bonds and the Champions of Krynn series.

And Pool of Radiance. With the 4+ hour-long slog thru Zhentil Keep that wouldn't let you save at any point...

Seriously, in PF2 you're agonizing over how to use that 3rd action constantly: for a 3rd attack, to trip your opponent? Do you Feint before you make your 1st attack? PF2 was designed to optimize turn-based play to the fullest. Realtime With Pause would completely take the soul out of PF2.


I think it would make a great Final Fantasy Tactics clone.

I spent hours playing Curse of the Azure Bonds back in the day.


I think that the rule structure of the game would translate very well to a CRPG, because there is an underlying engine that is used across many different rules. Some examples:

1. Degrees of success is used across almost everything, and the math is based on +/- 10.

2. Level factors in to everything, so again supplying the math to different aspects of the game can be done across attacks, difficulty classes (including AC, since it's a DC), and skill checks.

3. Because opposed rolls are reduced to basically rolling initiative, you can totally redesign how two entities interact with each other. Instead of rolling off, choosing the applicable modifiers for each entity, and comparing them, you now have a unified "DC" to beat when interacting, which is always 10 + their accompanying modifier.

4. The structure of feats (class, general, skill) means that you have a clear coded 'class' for each thing that can be expanded on. People are free to create their own feats, free to change the availability of the feats in the game, and since feats unlock more options and don't just statically increase numbers in 2e (aside from a few examples where proficiency is increased or something similar), access to feats won't risk breaking the balance of the game in terms of difficulty (since level helps balance the difficulty progression inherently).

Anyways, sorry for a level 5 Wall of Text, but those are just some of my thoughts on why it's positioned to work very well in a computer environment.

Just. Give me X-Com 2, reskinned as a Pathfinder game. And I will be forever happy. :D

Especially if it maintains the level of challenge that X-Com does... Maybe a game where you are in charge of a Pathfinder Lodge? So instead of a fixed group of characters, you have a pool of Pathfinders + permadeath.

That would be absolutely a dream game. :D

Owlcat really did knock it out of the park with Kingmaker and after their next project is done in the next few years I'd very much like to see them take a shot at a PF2 game.

The only hangup here is that Paizo is going to probably want some really strong and/or well received Adventure Path with a bit of user and critical acclaim before they're really able to market the video game itself this is probably going to take a while to establish.

Once PF2 has more books out, I don't see why they can't redesign monsters and PCs from a PF1 adventure path into 2e. They have been practically rebuilding every area, encounter, and statblock already with Pathfinder Kingmaker anyway.

I listened to their interview with Know Direction and I see them very much transitioning to PF2 eventually. They have 6 campaigns of Wrath of the Righteous going on in their studio to support the development of the CRPG. They had been 3.x/PF fans for years before going into CRPGs. They probably stuck with 2st Edition so as not to have to redo all the work they put into the PF:K engine. It's only a matter of time before they play with the new edition after more options come out. And apparently they already plan to incorporate 2e-style backgrounds into WotR. They probably will transition once the number of options in PF2 protects any 2nd Edition CRPG from the accusation that "people have lost their options."


PF2e reads exactly as a turn based tactics game. Exploration mode reads like if someone applied a turn based system to the overworld/time between fights with all the pros and cons. Downtime being the difficult part, probably best as a "until you finish the activity" thing.

I would love this, and I'm a huge fan of X-Com 2 style grid + action + turn based idea.

Those pathfinder games are huge easily having hundreds of hours of gameplay. Thanks to the large amount of story and customizeability. The graphics, sounds and effects are also very good. In other words, yeah they arent easy to make.

I predit that there will be a beta by end of the year. Final release depends on how much they have to fix and deadlines.

I loved Kingmaker when I ran it several years back. It'd be cool to play it. Especially if it's as good as people say.

As for the OP. If they can make a turn-based game out of a convoluted system like AD&D 1st edition, PF2 seems like it'd be a breeze to make a game out of.
I play PF2 using Fantasy Grounds. So much of it is automated (if you want it to be). Wouldn't be a stretch at all to make a video game out of it.

I believe the Kickstarter page lists "July 2021" as a projected date.


A large problem turning it into a video game would be reactions, they seem to make up a large and important part of the system. Just having the first one that applies apply losses a lot, and asking the player in every instance might be tedious and disruptive.

Otherwise the combat part would translate easily.

I'm thinking of other semi-automated combat like FF12 and FF13, I wonder if first applies could be a default, but you could also create a priority list that favours ignoring some reactions, etc.
