The title is intriguing, but I don't know quite what to make of it.
Supposedly this is the end of the Skywalker family storyline.
I wonder if Kylo Ren will return to the light side and take up the name Skywalker?

The replacement for the Jedi Order that Rey starts up?

If he's an inspiration rather than an actual relative, I could see it working.
Or maybe they're resurrecting Luke to save the day, I don't know. :)

Because we really want to retcon Episode 8?
That said, there are so many ways to interpret that title. XD

Be curious to see what Abrams acknowledges and what he jettisons from the last flick.
Looks like Kylo's mask gets fixed (pity- his smashing it was part of about the only thing in TLJ that I unreservedly loved).

The super obvious, and therefore one I immediately discard, is that Kylo kills the Emperor.
Remember in Force Awakens, Kylo is asking Vader to show him the power of the Dark side and says, "Show me grandfather... and I will finish what you started."
The obvious callback that is possible is that Anakin's spirit has been suppressed by the Emperor, and so Kylo gets to say something like this again to the real spirit of his grandfather, and goes on to kill the Emperor. It also echoes Anakin's own redemption.
It feels a bit to pat, and easy though. Abrams will want something that isn't so easily predictable.

One fairly simple theory is that "jedi" gets discarded as a term, and new lightside force users take on the title "skywalker".

If we follow the former naming conventions of the final films in the Original and Prequel Trilogies, Return of the Jedi, and Revenge of the Sith, does The Rise of Skywalker herald a new type of warrior monks?
... and what would you call Rey’s actions at the start of the trailer if not Skywalking?
Will Rey inherit the mantle by deed if not by bloodline?
Master Yoda, who saw glimpses of the future, did say there was another. What if he was not referring to Leia as we had surmised?
Balance to The Force. Again.

Of course, "a role" could mean a lot of things. Maybe he just appears in flashbacks. Maybe he's an evil force ghost running everything about the First Order and Snoke was just a lackey to throw off suspicion. Maybe they used the clones from the expanded universe and that was set to activate once the one he saw as the biggest threat was gone. XD

Its funny. People are saying the Emperor is back.
I watched the trailer and the implication I got was that its Supreme Leader Snoke laughing.
Also, at the Celebration panel, after the trailer rolled, when the laughing ended, Ian Mcdiarmid was on stage, and in Palpatine voice, told them to roll it again.

Well, since we also see the Death Star wreckage, that is either Yavin or Endor (or one of their moons). Theoretically it could be either, but I think Endor is more likely. If we're delving into the secrets of the Force, then the one which Palpatine was directly on seems a little more likely. In addition, the desire to have echoes within the series would suggest Endor as more likely.
Palpatine force ghost is easily within the realm of possibility for the series. Flashbacks have been used, but pretty sparingly and only with new characters.

Or the entire, pretty solid film.
He won't be able to 100% please either camp.
I just hope for God's sake he doesn't rehash the beats of Return of the Jedi, like he did with TFA.

The color of the tile is also red+blue=purple. But I have to say, this is only interesting for me in the way of how more of a trainwreck Can this trilogy become. JJ admitted they had some ideas for the whole trilogy which were then unceremoniously dumped upon by Rian Johnson. Now the great Champion of writing good endings, Mr. Lost himself, is supposed to bring this back on track.
Oh, and they thought their new funny sidekick BB-8 needs his own sidekick ...

Werthead |

Hopeully they won't be jerking around CGI Leia and let her rest. A scene where they show she passed away and they attend her funeral would be fine.
Apparently Leia had an entire storyline cut from TFA where she's on a Resistance starship, so they've mined that and some cut footage from TLJ to create a new story for her.
Now the great Champion of writing good endings, Mr. Lost himself, is supposed to bring this back on track.
To be fair to Abrams, the problem isn't that he doesn't write or direct good endings, but that he never sticks around to the ending and lets other people end them for him, years after he's gone off to do other stuff. ALIAS kind of petered out without him, LOST's ending was handled by Carlton Cuse & Damon Lindelof and FRINGE's ending was JH Wyman's (and by far the best of the three).

Just remembered.
In Last Jedi, Yoda's Force Ghost was able to affect the physical world.
If Palpatine has returned as a Force Ghost I could see a Force Ghost Luke fighting him to keep his evil from the galaxy.

I really hope not. I don't want Luke playing an active role. Maybe a mentor style Force Ghost appearance, but he's supposed to be done. We're supposed to have moved on to the new kids now.
I'm not actually excited by the Emperor coming back, but they might be able to make that work. Luke saving the day defeats the whole point.

I think Yoda was the one thing I unambiguously loved about TLJ. XD That was great.
See, I hated that bit with the passion of a thousand suns... ah well.
Suppose we'll see, although ol' Palpy would be the first dark side force ghost we've gotten in the films to date if that's how he turns up.... I mean, there were plenty in the various tie-ins, but in the movies until now it's been a "good guy" thing.

Dark Empire and Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Force came out at the same time in 1991.
They were the first new Star Wars book since 1983 and first comic since 1986.
Dark Empire was the first time the Emperor had clones.

Episode 7 made almost everything from the original trilogy meaningless. The bad guys were more numerous, more powerful, and with a bigger super-weapon than ever before, while the good guys were fewer, weaker, and more out-gunned than ever before.
...but at least they got rid of Palpatine, right?
Episode 9: Hold my blue milk...
