Breaking down magic items to be parts for new magic items

Is there a feat or spell that lets you take one magic item (worth X gp), reduce it to its components (X/2 gp) and use those to build a new magic item?

Pathfinder 1.0 only. No third party materials, please, or D&D 3.0/3.5 or homebrew stuff.

EDIT: Or "ask your GM." That isn't helpful, since the GM would prefer I find the solution within the rules rather than make him spend GM prep time going to the messageboards and asking this question himself and tracking the answers.


I'm not sure if there is a need for such a feat since mechanically its the same as selling the item and then using the gold you got from selling it to build the new item.

The rules semi-support that you can do this via the upgrading rules.

I would ask the DM if you could be allowed to do this without any additional feats. They may require that the deconstructed magic item be similar to the one you want to build but as I said, mechanically this is the same as just selling the old item and using the money from selling it to build the new one.

Ultimate Wilderness has rules for salvaging magic items--no feat required other than the appropriate item creation feat.

Pro: Can drastically reduce the time required to craft an expensive item since salvaged "parts" don't count against the standard one-day-per-1,000-gp time requirement.

Pro: You can bypass some construction requirements if you include enough materials from a salvaged item with those same requirements.

Con: You only get 2/3 of the item's cost back, whereas you could theoretically sell the old item for full cost (i.e., half price).

Selling, in this case, isn't an option. Gotta scavenge what we have.
