Eddie exits the mess hall and moves to the front office. The pyre is throwing flames high into the air. The barracks is producing smoke and flames.


Boss exits the office and moves west. He stares in that direction.

Seeing Teedum standing by himself, he calls out. "Mr. Teedum, this camp is clear, though the job isn't done yet. You said before that you knew something about what lies to the west.

"West....that's Cold Marrow. Accursed place it is. Nothing lives there. Not even a field mouse. Some old, old civilization is supposed to have thrived there once. Don't recall who or what. Nobody goes there now. Ain't no reason to. Surely they ain't goin there. My guess is they got a trail back to Doskar's Crucible where they came from in the first place. I reckon theys gonna turn back to the south and head there."

As Ranok and Khonsu move west, they pass close enough to the large round mass of disturbed earth in the ruins of the stable to alert its inhabitant of their presence. A giant beetle the size of a small house that looks capable of biting a full grown horse in half suddenly bursts from the earth. As mud, dirt, and rocks cascade off its back, the thing’s carapace shimmers with purple and white lights that trap the eye and dull the mind.

Ranok responds to Bill by turning his head to face him and spraying him with spittle as he responds with an articulate "AAargh! Kill the bug! Kill the bug!" after swinging wildly and missing the broad side of the giant dung beetle.


Hypnotic Carapace (Su)
Once the glimmering jeweled carapace of an Azlanti Chariot Beetle rained arcane fire down on foes and turned aside enemy magic as easily as a tower shield does a sling stone. Now, though, these weakly shimmering magical lights only daze those within 30 feet who look upon them (DC 15 Will save negates). The save is Charisma based and includes a +2 racial bonus.

If you are within 30 feet of the beetle, please roll your save prior to any actions.

Do we have to save every round?


The way I read it, yes. "Those within 30 feet.." and no mention of one save. Do you have any older rules that would fill in the blanks?

I'd say that it could use the ability every round as well, and we'd have to save every round. Otherwise it would have stated how many uses of it it has, or once a character saves, they are immune. With that said, it is a standard action to use a (su).

It sounds like an aura effect to me, so save every round makes sense. I simply wanted to be sure.

I started to post this last round, but my SOP with slumber is to have the rogue do the coup-de Grace on a sleeping foe so the sneak attack damage goes into the death save. Someone with a x3 weapon could also take advantage of the auto crit. Everyone else should have a readied attack in case it wakes up


Thanks for the heads up on SU being a standard action. The beetle used his standard action to bite Ranok. SU is not active this round.

Bill takes advantage of the sleeping monster and moves into flanking position with Ranok. With both blades at the ready he says "Yep, right here with you, Ranok."

In case the coup de grace is not fatal. Ziera's glaive crits at 3x.

Even if it does not wake from Ziera's brutal strike, Ranok will continue the attack. The rage will drop off of Khonsu this round. He will attack if it is discovered that the beetle lives.
