No game this weekend for me. GF is coming down. Between now and next weekend I'll try to decide whether or not to keep my primary campaign going. Right now "No" is the strong contender.

My new campaigns party is set!

Zari, Gnome Paladin
Nysallae, Elf Witch
Vanko, Human Vigilante [Warlock]
Greece, Human Kinetecist

A well-rounded if nonstandard group of classes.

If anything this weekend, it'll be Aiymi's Runelords campaign. I have a flight to the DC area on Sunday late-morning.

I'd happily play in this group...lol

I would love to hear more about this!

We might give 2nd edition a try.

Overall, I really like it but it's definitely different.

Does it play as much like 5th edition D&D as it looks like 5e?

I have never, nor will I ever, play 5th edition.

I looked through the books once, but barely, and only once.

I guess we're playing Starfinder instead.

No complaints from me, I love Starfinder.

4th edition forgotten realms was the last straw.

A solemn vow was vowed to never, ever give my money to WotC.

I could have eventually gotten behind the 4th ed engine for Forgotten Realms, but how they literally destroyed the best parts of Faerun just because they were whinging about there was too much established lore and they wanted to majorly reshape the setting to fit their own radically different "vision" -- that was disrespectful, lazy horsesh!t.

5e didn't look bad when it debuted, but then there was the whole Zak Smith harassment sh!tshow and Mike Mearls' quiet endorsement & actual assistance with it. Nah, f!ck 'em.

Taking away the backstory and recent...umm...ugliness...

My experience with 4th Ed was...well...meh. I didn't hate it, didn't love it, didn't like it, didn't dislike it. Had it's moments. Felt like playing an MMO to me though.

I've played 5th...once. When I have to go to the Cincinnati office I have a standing invitation to a group there ran by one of my techs. It was easy to just step in and play with little/no knowledge of the system. That's a big selling point for new players, but I didn't see a lot of option for customizing and complexity of a character, which is more of what I look for. Sure, it'll get better for that over time, but I already have it with PF1.

And I don't want to spend money on this stuff forever.

We had the Ruins of Azlant group available, but the timing was just bad, and we ended up playing Raiders of the North Sea instead.

Yeah, that's what Scint has told me. Her FLGS has a bi-weekly 5e night that she regularly plays at and has recently started DMing for, and she's told me that it's a pretty easy pick-up-and-play system but that it'll never replace PF1 for sheer level of customization and volume of options. That said she's also planned to start using 5e instead of PF for future Babynerds games for that very reason.

When I eventually end up moving out that way I'll no doubt likely join her as a player for the 5e nights as it's basically the only kind of social outing I'd be likely to really enjoy, but we'll definitely be sticking to PF1 for our own games. Maybe after getting to know some of the other gamers a bit more, recruiting them into a local PF1 group.

I've seen PF2 and it looks a lot like 5e in the statblocks and layout so I was curious if it plays similarly too.

Finally got to play Savage Tide again! For a bit at least!

Spoiler:
We just reached the temple in Fogmire in Here There Be Monsters last time we were able to play, so today was the entrance area and first and second major traps, the deadfall at the left entrance and the bizarre teleporter one with the weird candles-bloody thrones-haunted mirrors setup.

The invoker|oracle went left when the rest of the party went right and tripped the deadfall trap, which resulted in the rest of the group having to dig her and her will-o-wisp (courtesy Leadership) out of the rubble. (And funny on that - the halfling magus|swashbuckler and the oracle|harbinger together could move exactly the same amount of stone per round as the lone fourth character, the slayer|investigator.)

Then they got to the mirror room and, after fiddling and getting blown up and making a huge mess figuring out how the trap worked, the invoker ended up getting herself dominated and the party went all Yakkety Sax for a round until the magus could dispel her.

We left it off just as they jumped through the portal, and the three bar-lgura mates are waiting for them just on the other side, alerted by the massive amount of noise the deadfall trap made.

There seems to be quite a bit of customization in 2nd edition.

The action system alone is almost worth the cost of the book.

Just as important, there seems to be a lot more room for expansion.

I haven't looked at PF2 since the initial beta release.

They've changed it enough to my liking.

All of that is good feedback for 5E. I have a friend who might be starting up a game, and I don't hang out with that friend very often, so I'll play 5E to hang out with him.

I never knew that they changed up Forgotten Realms so much. I've always preferred homebrew settings to published settings. And since that's because of the mountain of lore to deal with, I understand why they would want to make it more accessible. It sounds like they did it in a way that long time fans weren't happy with, though.

Regarding the Zak S terribleness, I thought Mike Mearls spoke out against it? Didn't they also remove Zak S from the consulting credits for future prints of the books?

As for PF2E: I'm never ever ever in beta testing for any sort of game. I have rules from too many game systems rattling around in my head, and I'm getting them confused all the time. Beta testing just adds another rule set (that becomes defunct) to take up space. What I've read of PF2E's official release looks promising, though.

Fly home from the Virginia office tonight. Collapse...hopefully in bed...sleep until midday Monday.

Good luck!

Running the secondary campaign this weekend. I'm probably going to announce the 6-month hiatus of the primary campaign. I am so disillusioned with it and disappointed in my ability to GM it worth a damn that I just don't want to even play it. My players say they're enjoying it and I do believe them, but I'm not. It's fallen off the rails and my enthusiasm for it is completely gone. I'll probably make someone angry with the announcement because some of the players have really invested a lot of time in the development of their characters. But it's probably necessary if I'm to be able to save it.

Grand Lodge

This weekend should be interesting, between Rise of the Runelords tomorrow followed by drunk movie night, then Skull and Shackles Sunday. All before running away to GenCon Tuesday.

I got to go to GenCon once. I always wanted to go back. Then I got a post about NasCrag yesterday. Now I really wish I could go at least once more. That was the best part of a really fun trip.

Second-to-last NWN session of Race for the Runecarved Key tonight. The Harpers are infiltrating the wererats' lair.

Savage Tide tomorrow, continuing into the second half of the Fogmire temple.

Next part of In Wrath's Shadow in NWN on Sunday. Specifically, running King of the Storval Stairs. Giants for everyone!

I'm still figuring out the character creation process for 2nd edition but we're most likely playing Starfinder.

A couple of friends of my son want me to run them on some PF games. I told them I would. I have the time, but I wonder if I have the wherewithal to do it. We'll see if this actually comes to pass.

The Atwood street festival is this weekend, so we'll probably go to that on Saturday.

Paizo did a blog post about the process, if that helps any.

Mostly it's due to time and after work exhaustion from working outside in 85+ temperatures for an average of 10 hours a day.

I can relate.

Savage Tide didnt happen - half the players were absent - so ran first session of my own campaign's playtest for the other two instead. Went pretty well IMO.

The Atwood street festival was a lot of fun, even though it was mostly an excuse to sell hippie wares at an inflated price (Crookshanks however found the one hippie dress on sale) the music was typical of any Midwest music festival, a crappy rockabilly band on one stage and a forgettable hard rock band on the other.

So who's doing what this weekend? It's my group's weekend off but I have no other plans. We're probably not going to reconvene until the 24th, at least that's how things look now. People are traveling and doing vacation things. One of my guys has two concerts he's seeing this month (I'm going along on one of those. Gonna see Iron Maiden AGAIN!!). I hope we can get together on the 17th, but that's unlikely as he's seeing Queen on the 15th with his family and we're seeing Maiden on the 19th. He says he takes longer to "recharge" now.

So what about youse guys?

It's our anniversary Monday (which I JUST remembered yesterday) so something involving that.

PnP on Saturday - either Savage Tide or homebrew game, depending on who, shows - and NWN event on Sunday.

Also car shopping.

There are no plans for the weekend that I am currently aware of.

What are you looking at buying? Anything in particular? I love when OTHER people car shop. I'd rather take a beating.

Used small vehicle for one person and occasional possessions. Something like a Honda Accord or Toyota sedan. Preferably below 10k$ and with monthly payments that I can wedge into my limited income.

Carfax has been lovely for helping sort thru options rather than browsing the lots.

My current vehicle - a well-worn 2003 Ford Taurus - is essentially on its last legs.

Good luck. My vehicle died over a year ago and is sitting in my carport literally gathering dust and the footprints of stray cats. I have no illusions of ever owning another vehicle, given my income level.

Some good news today, though. I made the first premium payment on my new insurance plan and it was $34 less than they quoted me! Chinese food tonight!

Mine's in our driveway. Engine troubles, bad brakes, power steering failure, shorts in the lights wiring, and nonfunctional blinkers are the things I'm aware of, and I imagine a mechanic will find more detailed info when/if he gets to looking at it.

Also its tags expired at the beginning of the month, and it can't pass emissions testing in its current state (the check engine light won't go away, which is an auto-fail), so I can't even keep driving it in its current state if I wanted to. >_>

Dang. That's too bad. But I'd say it's time to let it go.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yeah. It's been a good car to me for the past 6 years or so but it's nearing 200,000 miles and has definitely had better days.

Mine has 235K miles on it. I've had it since 2005 and it was a really good vehicle until one day it just sort of died a sad, rattling death. It's a 2002 Honda CR-V, and arguably the best car I've ever owned.

Have you considered a 2007-2014 Mazda2 or a 2008-present Mazda3? They're supposed to be reliable, zippy little cars. The 2012 Mazda3 and later are available with SkyActiv engines for better fuel efficiency/economy. I'm partial to the hatchbacks, but the sedans are just as good.

Stay away from used late model Ford Focuses & Fiestas, and from (BMW-built) Minis. Many of them have known transmission issues.

I had not, mostly because family and SO all recommended Honda or Toyota. But I definitely will look into it now. Thanks!

Bought a new car a few months ago, actually. Honda and Toyota are both popular for their long term value and reliability, but I'm not convinced that Hyundai and Mazda aren't closing that gap. Their price often makes them competitive.

We ended up going with the Hyundai Elantra GT (GT = hatchback), and we're very happy with it. It barely beat out the Mazda 3 that we looked at.

*********

Weekends are always busy for us. If we don't have some sort of social event, there's always chores and home improvement things to work on. This week we're going to visit friends who moved to a smaller town south of Houston. It's about an hour away, but it will be nice to see them again.

I'm feeling left behind by all of the PF2 newness. I don't know when I'll have the opportunity to familiarize myself with those rules, but maybe I'll devote some time this weekend to reading some of that.

On a lark, I'm converting the Elder Scrolls pantheon to PF1 deities, but that's going slow. I also hope to work on that this weekend.

I like Hyundai (and Kia) too, but all the local dealers are weaselly "How much can you afford a month?"/push for 6 & 7(!!!) year car loan-types.

4 people marked this as a favorite.

New car acquired. Ended up with a 2016 Chevrolet Sonic (Gotta go fast), as it was after a thorough browse of the lot the best option as far as cost, current usage/mileage/wear and tear, function, and operation (because I don't know how to drive manual).

All in all I'm pretty happy with it thus far, and the expense looks like it'll be manageable. And having a vehicle that isn't feeling like it's about to fall apart at any second, much less having functional brakes, blinkers, cruise control, and defrost, is an immense step up.

That's great news! Now, the important part, what color is it?

White.
