What I most want to see with PF2.

Prerelease Discussion

Having had a couple weeks to think about the new edition, I've figured out what I most want to see...

A commitment to a FAQ system.

Seriously. We are about to lose a decade plus of institutional knowledge. PF1 could survive without frequent FAQ answers. Now we're about to launch into new territory.

Want to excel? Support the new game. For real. Commit to something, such as "every Friday we will answer X FAQs unless there aren't X outstanding questions." Then do it. Get a week ahead before you start, so when the inevitable "it's convention month" interference happens, you're covered.

Commit the manpower. Support the system. We're going to have questions.

Fun fact: WotC does this on a semi-monthly irregular basis.

They've actually not done one since Oct 2017.

5e is running circles around PF in sales despite me being pretty sure that somewhere out there somebody is fuming about how WotC should commit to weekly schedules and be held accountable for no new FAQ for the last 3 months.

This does not bode well for any commitments towards catering to highly invested fans who will savage Paizo apart if there's just a slightest slip in the schedule (cref: War of the Crown PG).

Yeaaaaaaah, my players who did think 2e was needed thought that good alternative would have been more FAQs/erratas. Main reason why they thought new edition was needed was that they didn't believe paizo would do more often FAQs/erratas

What I would love to see from the development of PF2:

  • No power creep. If a class is objectively better than any the Core Twelve, there must be a hefty game-mechanical price tag to go with it. Codes of Conduct and other schticks that are highly subjective when used in actual play Do Not Count. If some knuckleheads can play Lawyerball with minimal effort, get rid of it and come up with something else.
  • Immunization against Splatbookius Crankemouticus is Mandatory, Citizens. Release really good stuff infrequently instead of errata-riddled not-checked-for-WTF'ery in a constant deluge.
  • The Errata Count Shall Not Exceed The Page Count.
  • Become not that which you overthrew. A decade ago you were the scrappy underdog. The student that overthrew the master has since been dethroned by the aforementioned master. Objectively answering the reasons why has hopefully been undertaken prior to the announcement of PF2.
  • Robust conversion rules, since the indications are that this will not be done by the publisher for Reasons.
  • Thou Shalt Not Publish Solely Because of Ye Olde Schedule. To paraphrase: "Awesome stuff is never published late, nor is it released prematurely. It arrives precisely when it is ready."
