Papa-DRB, those fonts codes are not working. Some folks have a plug in which allows them to see it, but as it stands, the message boards still don't support those tags.

4) Thus far, this is my single greatest gripe: I no longer have a way to get a single-page focused view of the unified content/threads I follow here on the boards. As has been mentioned a few posts above -- not being able to track the activity on the Off-Topic Discussion threads and the Online Campaigns threads simultaneously has been a little off-putting.

It's pretty clear that's a bug, not a feature.

The whole Gamer Life subforum is broken at the moment.

The Online Campaigns subforum does show up on the main page for me - not sure if you're saying it doesn't.

I didn't mean to be unclear -- as you noted, thejeff, I can see everything *other* than the Off-Topic Discussions content I follow while on the main page. I'm sure it'll be resolved at best possible speed.

By the way: nice to read ya again, chief! Hope all is well with you!

Dang, you are correct. I thought that I had removed that add on, but I see now that I didn't and now the:

red

underline

doesn't work.

edit: but it works when I enable the add-on....

okay, this is REALLY hard to read and navigate. it might look nice on mobile devices, I guess, but on the desktop the new board is less user friendly than it was before.

the frontpage looks great though

I like a lot of this! The modern design will have some advantages when the last bits of table-based layout are finally ripped out and you can start doing some responsive stuff. Also, when the bugs are fixed, things like links and navigation are working, etc.

It does seem like this might have benefitted from some more testing though...

For me, it's not OK that links are the same color as plain text. I noticed the first page of this very discussion has people linking to examples of issues, but you'd never know any of that was clickable. That's not good.

Sovereign Court

My one gripe so far, is that I cannot find my subscriptions anymore.

Overall, I like the look, but is there a way to view all the forums in one place? I'm only seeing the divided-up links (Paizo, Pathfinder, Starfinder, etc.). If not....that would be awesome to have back. It makes it much harder to browse the boards on my lunch break if I have to check around for threads.

+1 on the font size, but I think they mentioned in the other thread that they're going to be fixing that.

EDIT: I think I found it? It's REALLY hard to navigate, though, mostly because it puts up aaaaaaaall the old playtest/RPG Superstar stuff before things like "Pathfinder RPG General Discussion" and "Advice," which I'd think would be nice to have near the top.

I think it's the same order it's always been in.

You can collapse/hide subfolders by clicking the little arrows next to the name.

It has the disadvantage that when I get up and do it in the morning and then refresh I get a whole new crop of now visible older ones.

It seems that locked threads can now no longer be viewed. I came upon one that was locked and it seemed to contain only Sara Maries post announcing the lock. Is that intentional?

For my taste, the font in the new board is too small, and the posts are too wide to be read comfortably. The font itself is also rather bland and does not really look anyway "modern", I think.

Also, still no https? Later this year, major browsers will start warning users visiting about sites without https as insecure, but I'm sure you know that.

Edit: Please don't think I'm only negative about the new design. Just pointing out some things that, in my view, could use some improvement. All in all, I like the new site.

Probably the thing I dislike most is the new Forum menus - as problematic as it may have been for some people, I liked having ALL the forums in one long scroll at the top level, so I could see the first ten threads in each to get a feel for what the forums were currently buzzing about. I visited quite a few of the existing forums this way.

Now, it's likely I'll just stick to the two or three which interest me, which means i miss out on a lot of cool chatter I otherwise wouldn't know about. :(

Ah, well, it'll probably save me time...

The forums as they once were are more or less intact here:

http://paizo.com/community/forums (that is a link as well)

It's missing off-topic, but that's a bug that they have identified and are working on.

May be a fluke. Occasionally all the posts are deleted along with the lock. At least some of the locked threads still have posts in them.

My initial complete dislike is starting to fade as things begin to finally take shape. I was really concerned about how things looked in the beginning.

So if the URL was secure.paizo.com/paizo/messageboards

and the new URL is http://paizo.com/community/forums

Does that mean this site is no longer secure?

The presence or absence of "secure" in the domain name doesn't actually tell you anything about security—what really matters is whether you're using the https (secure) or http (standard) protocol. (Some browsers show the protocol at the start of the URL; other browsers just show you a lock icon for https. But even that can be a bit misleading, as it's possible to mix secure and insecure content on a page.)

Rest assured that whenever sensitive data (your password, credit card number, etc.) is being transmitted, it's being done securely.

Sorry. I still can't find the fancy drop down menu you've made to get to message boards. Again I'm on phone, so =(

Good news is I've been parading in FAWTL like a living sign post, telling them to post all their gripes about the new boards here, so you guys can figure which parts are intended, which are not.

That's very nice. Doesn't hurt my eyes at all. It would take only a few minor alterations to modernize it, but that's still just a couple days of work at most.

Hey! What's wrong with hyperinvested nerds? We care about important things like who actually wrote Total Recall.

(And also why Lashunta live on Castrovel. <- my favorite Starfinder fact).

I hope Paizo will be switching to all HTTPS in the not too-distant future. Chrome is scheduled to start shouting scary warnings about security risks on any page that doesn't use SSL starting next July. It already does so if you start typing in a form field on an unsecured page.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Ah! Much better! Thank you so much!

I kind of feel bad for asking, but could we maybe get the bold a little... bolder? As it stands, it can be hard to tell when something is bold, but the bigger text is much nicer. Also, if we could maybe get people's names to be a bit bolder as well? The text overall is better, but it would be nice if, at a glance, I could tell whether text in my PBPs are spoken or simply descriptive.

Whoa. Suddenly the forums are better. Thanks!

By the way, "quoted" text is still in a small font. Could that be bumped a size or two, thanks,

That's actually the strongest argument for adding SSL.

Paizo's quite right that going HTTPS still generates a non-zero load upon whatever daemon is serving the page, and using it where it isn't required is technically inefficient. Mandatory encryption of public information while in transit is... kind of silly. Further, anything a man-in-the-middle attacker might pull off on the forums is... meaningless.

But still. As you say, browsers are moving towards secure-by-default, which is also understandable. It'll be best for Paizo to bow to that inevitable trend than disturb visitors.

Between this morning and now the text got a lot bigger. Is there a way to make it smaller again? Personal preference, but I consider smaller text more readable.

All this big text makes it feel like everybody is being really loud. Small font option please.

Like if I could read the boards in 10 point Times (not New Roman) that would be ideal.

Edit: Larger text is really irritating when scrolling through a list of topics on a board. At the very least it should be smaller there just for the sake of "less scrolling for the same information."

P.S. It would appear we've swung the opposite side with font size. I can certainly get used to this if I need to, but that's definitely larger than normal (for any forum I visit, anywhere). And no, I haven't zoomed anything.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I had no problem with the other text size but I do like the larger one.

I think the new site is growing on me. Started the day off with a bit of mild confusion thinking that somehow my bookmark for my campaigns tab had gotten switched to someplace else, but overall the site feels more responsive. The change to text size is a step in the right direction (if surprisingly large as some have mentioned, though I find it easier to adjust to bigger than smaller personally), and fixing profile/alias/link text colors has also made the site feel a little more like the version before.

The only other aspect from the old version of the site that I miss is the ability to see if I have any new PMs at the top of any given page, rather than having to remember to specifically check that. Is that something that can be added back in? Even just a tiny number over the corner of the "my account" button in the header would be helpful.

Re, fonts: This is about the size we're going to stick to for standard paragraphs. However, there are some issues that occurred when we restored colors that are have caused line-height problems. We're wading through ~2K lines of historical CSS against our new stylesheet. Very happily for us, we have a new frontend developer that just joined the team last week. Expect more improvements in terms of styling as time moves on.

Re, PMs: We have a plan to get folks more visual indicators of when a message is received (and how many). I can't speak to how soon you'll see it, as we have some number of regressions to look at, but we do hear you and want to fix this.

Glad to hear it, Chris. ^^ Thanks for all the hard work (to everyone on the tech team)!

What a responsive bunch of staff!

Thank you so, so much for making some of the most needed changes so quickly!

I love the new site, and most of the things I didn't like seem to either already be fixed or are high on the list.

Thanks for fixing the links! I can see blue now!

I can see cleeearly now the links are blue!

(doo doot, doo doot!)

I can see all outbound links in my posts!

(doo doot, doo doot, doo doot!)

Gone are the daaark links that had me blind ...

It's gonna be a bright (BRIGHT), bright (bright!) sun-shiny forum!

The text doesn't wrap when I resize windows, even when I toss my window to the side to fill half the screen using my Quicken Resize meta_mouse_user feat.

Let's see, after this update... The two things I'd like to see are:

1) Breadcrumb links back to the Forums from the Campaign pages. For example, from paizo.com/campaigns, I can only get back to the homepage through the breadcrumbs. There IS a double slash there, which makes me feel like the link is supposed to be there but currently isn't.

2) Easier access to the main forums page. I'd like it most if there was a button at the very top to go straight to the forums. Failing that, the Community page should have a link to all forums, not just to specific subforums. I often want to browse the entire forum for updates at once, and having to access a subforum and then the main forum is a very roundabout, ineffective way of navigating.

(It's possible both of these issues are already on the list of stuff to do, of course. XD I just wanted to note some of the user-friendliness issues I've observed.)

I am much happier with the text size, keep it please. But as mentioned in my previous post, things are still slower, less accessible and more difficult to browse.

I guess my request to know what features have been ADDED is just put on ignore (for now?)

For anyone who cares about obscure browsers, the new site is much easier to use in Silk on my Kindle Fire. :D

mardaddy wrote:

Sites don't often add entirely new stuff until they're sure all the old stuff has converted correctly.

Someone above (staff) said that changes will be rolling out step-by-step. So whatever new things they're adding will be sometime after they get the old things working smoothly again.

Anyone else having trouble making new threads? I was trying to make a comment on a product that didn't have a discussion yet, but each time I pressed submit it would act as though I had pressed the preview button instead.

The larger font now looks much better thanks!

It seems we now lost the display of forum tags next to the user name, and the user name itself could use some differentiation from the normal running text style.

Also the forum overview could benefit from a tiny bit of more spacing after the "Last Post" lines of the threads; it's looking very crowded there.
