Starships

I spent the weekend familiarizing myself with the Starship building rules. Thought I would share what I had made.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions, recommendations, errors?

I just did a pass (you may have seen me). I appreciate when someone goes over my stuff with the red pen, so I hope I didn't step on your toes too much. I like what I see so far content-wise. Will definitely be pulling some of those ships for my own game. I might even consider offering that shuttle to my PCs. I know my wife will appreciate the firefly reference.

I noticed you're typing those statblocks by hand (or maybe copy-pasting them from somewhere else), so I humbly suggest using the following to create them and copy-pasting the Statblock tab.

I did see you actually and I appreciate the effort. Yes I am typing them by hand.

While I tried to pull a reference for each ship, I was also trying to create SOMEWHAT generic ships, the 'inspiration' thing is mostly an example of what the ship COULD represent, all across the spectrum.

And have fun with the Firefly!

Nice work. One thing I don't like here is the use of well known ship-art for ships.
There are so many awesome concept ship art out there why not use them (and give the artists some spotlight).

I would keep the "inspired by" section, but check for not so well known artworks for the ships. I think if you ask the artists, none of them will have a problem when you use their artwork for a free fan-product (DON'T forget to mention them (and their website)^^).

I love these designs. As a long-time (30 years) Traveller player, each of these designs meet my personal design guidelines. Keep up the good work. However, and mind you that this is just a suggestion, maybe you can add a Grand Admiral to the crew stats.

I plan to eventually start stating out high level characters to be crew members. At the moment I was concentrating on just making ships.

The "inspired by" is based off what I know about what the ship actually DOES. The tie fighter is a very cheap agile ship, so I used the idea of a Tie fighter when making the ship, a X-wing is pretty much the opposite as a heavy fighter. The Enterprise is built for exploration and science but still has some very powerful weapons. The Pillar of Autumn's main weapon is a rail gun with missile turrets on the side.

An original picture, while cool, does not have established lore for me to draw inspiration from, it would just be a picture.

Hey, Cap'n, this site has many original ship artwork you might enjoy.

Art and its use can be a huge sticking point for many people. I do understand how important it is as visuals invoke emotions and provide lots of info. And I do know of quite a few artist that look for their art and send cease and desist letters to people who are using their art without their permission.
Back in the 90's when I was in the bay area I was sitting close to two guy's talking and one of the just got fired from ILM because he had a picture of one of the star ships from Star Wars (I do not remember which one it was now as it was so long ago). But the point was ILM was very very aggressive on protecting their property. I also knew another guy who was fired for not properly disposing of some material (ie burn not throw away).

I agree things today are in some ways much more liberal in how people use other peoples images but in general you should know that personal use and web use are vastly different.

I myself did enjoy what you did and noticed how difficult it is to create large ships such as a modern day USA aircraft carrier that carries 70+ aircraft.
But that also might be a good thing.

This site is awesome. Aaaaaand bookmarked. I'll be showing this to my players and perhaps making some tokens for our digital tabletop.

Also if I did not say it or I am happy to say it again. Thanks for your work.

Glad you like it. Downloaded many of those images to use as a slideshow screen saver for one of my laptops. The associated Concept Vehicles site also has many fine images to mine for ideas.

Thank you!

My end goal is to have at least 1 ship for every Tier. The IDEA is to make a resource that can be referenced when ever someone needs a ship of any Tier. So early game ships, late game, fighters, bombers, Pirates, military, carriers, destroyers, Flag Ships, scary as hell monstrosities that violate Peace Treaties!

Open to build suggestions

First of all, thank you for coming up with these! It's great to have some more ships to pull from.

Might I suggest a few more? Just suggestions mind you.

Mayflower One (passenger shuttle, Airplane the Sequel)
Daedalus-class ship (Stargare SG-1 et al.)
The Ebon Hawk (or any Star Wars-the old republic player ship, Star Wars)
Klingon Bird-of-prey (Either the smaller B'rell or the 30-man K'vort, Star Trek)
The Bebop (old converted fishing trolly converted into a carrier, Cowboy Bebop)
Generic 50s style flying saucer (Prince of Space, etc.)

You are welcome and thank you for the suggestions!

Made a 'Civilian Transport (Tier6) ship', an Advanced Carrier(Tier 12) (Daedalus). Good ideas!

I already had made a Smugglers Transport/Millennium Falcon which is not that different from The Ebon Hawk.

Unfortunately there is no ship stealth technology, so while I made an "Advanced Destroyer" I can not truly make a "Bird of Prey".

The Bebop appears to just be a small freighter or transport ship. I made the "Economy Freighter"(Now named the Bepop) and "Begginer's Transport"(Firefly) as cheap low level ships that can be customized just for this reason. Granted the Bebop has lots of personality from the show, but that is up to the party to add to their OWN special ship. Which is why there are two cheap low Tier ships just ripe for a party to "find" and modify as they see fit :D

A flying Saucer....will have to think about HOW I want to do this one :D

Like I have said though, while many of these ships have an "inspired by" blurb, that does not mean that is the ONLY thing that ships could represent, far from it. The 1/4 Tier Cheap Interceptor could be a LOT of things, such as a junk ship put together by goblins out of space garbage! Those are just supposed to be examples. My goal was not to make an actual copy of a tie fighter, but rather to make the cheapest interceptor that I could for us as an enemy ship at early levels.

I see this star ship data base in the same way that I see an NPC codex/book/list/etc. A large listings of stats with various specialties and powers that I can then add what ever flavor text onto depending on what the situation calls for.

Scarab Sages

Hey man, thanks. I really like the cool stuff you're doing. I may disagree with a few of your build choices, but it's really nice to have a set of ships to use in case you need starship combat at any tier.

Might I suggest the original ROMULAN bird of prey from the original star Trek (The episode "Balance of Terror.") I realize that you can't incorporate a cloaking device (not yet!) but otherwise . . .

I'd run it as a low CR cruiser, with only 2 weapons, a Nuclear Missile on a turret (they had a few nukes on board) and One forward facing capitol Antimatter Mega-Missle Launcher (if you haven't seen the episode, essentially the weapon was SUPER godawful powerful, but had a limited range and could be outrun.)

Otherwise, like, a low drift drive (I don't think it even had warp drive in the show), low sensors, low armor, low shields. The Ship was basically a weapon delivery system.

EDIT:
Damn! How could I have forgotten this one? The Red Dwarf, from Red Dwarf. A massive mining vessel. It's got hangers (for two different kinds of shuttles) A med lab, science lab, even a secret prison! It would have to be a dreadnaught frame, but like, have few weapons and most of it's expansion bays would be dedicated to cargo holds.

Also, like, I guess it's impossible to do (now) but somehow it can be operated by a single human, a hologram, an android, and a cat-person.

Don't forget that the Red Dwarf also has an AI that can take on the roles of several crew -- and that, as best as I can remember, the Red Dwarf never engaged in ship combat or for that matter did much of anything else with its limited and clearly inadequate crew.

Scarab Sages

Nevermind, I made the prototype Romulan bird-of-prey. I'm going to post it over in my Star Trek thread when I get home.

While much of what was portrayed in the show can not be done yet, such as the auto-pilot AI, the idea of a very big corporate mining vessel is a good one.

The "Corporate Mining Vessel" ended up being tier 16, simply because the cost of the dreadnought frame is so HUGE!

Scarab Sages

Man, these are great. Really appreciate it.

Damn. Wow, that is a really high AC for a giant slow-moving target. Must be really good armor, and a phenomenal pilot.

Both are true, and necessary when navigating hazardous space, such as asteroid fields.

When stating these I always assume the Pilot has ranks=Tier. Keeps things simpler that way.

Well, I made a science vessel/flying saucer, came out to tier 6.

Why did I call this a science vessel? Well why else do you think aliens would abduct you if NOT to conduct crazy scientific experiments on you?

Just as long as it's not Galaxy Truckers

Trader vessels, made a Tier 1/2(light freighter) and a Tier 5(heavy freighter).

Now all of those pirates have something carrying cargo to attack!

Made a Troop Transport(Tier 12), now there is a powerful ship to transport troops planet-side for all of those Galactic Empires.

Good to have some free custom starships (and the builder to make'em) stuff out there. ;)

You are welcome!

After seeing the lack of variety of ships in the core rule book I thought that having a larger variety to choose from would be something that any Game Master would need. Hopefully people get some use out of this.

I designed a tier 3 fighter for use by Grey aliens from Bestiary 5, whom I'm converting to Starfinder to use as the main villain for a one shot for my group. It's fast, tough, hard to hit, and powerful. It should be. Greys are an advanced civilization. I posted both the stat block and ship sheet. I've been hunting for inspirational artwork all day. Now I just have to design the PC ship.

Grand Lodge

I designed a Tier 10 destroyer to act as an escort ship to work as a screening vessel for the Atech Immortal. It's faster and more agile but more lightly armored and shielded, a classic destroyer to screen the bigger, more powerful cruisers.

Sabaton-class destroyer

(ok, that was a mistake - I pasted an edit link instead of a view link).

Atech Sabaton-class destroyer

Liberty's Edge

Here's a file with six of the ships that I've made so far. They are listed below.

Long Haul Cargo Vessel (Tier 6 Bulk Freighter)
Angel of Mercy Hospital Ship (Tier 11 Cruiser)
Dog Days (Tier 4 Explorer)
Magnum Starfighter (Tier 2 Fighter)
Cerberus Starfighter (Tier 3 Fighter)
Runt Starfighter (Tier 1/3 Interceptor)

Just because of the ships class name, you should nick-name it "The Space Tank" with Cpt. J. Broden. :D

Liberty's Edge

Added 2 new ships to this file.

They are:

Whipcrack (Tier 1/4 Racer)
Dragon's Claw (Tier 11 Transport)

NICE!

Liberty's Edge

Going for a single ship link this time. It was added to the above file as well.

Wildstorm Industries Avalon-class Dreadnought (Tier 20)

Nice! However, there's something else to consider that the CRB doesn't take into account. For large NPC commanded warships like this, there should be a crew slot for carried troops/Marines. If there's a Supplement in the works for advanced ship design, we should make this a request.

I like it, but my coffee had not kicked in yet so I misread gunners as gamer's and had to do a double take.

MDC

Liberty's Edge

Here's another low tier fighter for you all.

Tier 3 - Shivan (Tiny Fighter)

Liberty's Edge

Here is the aircraft carrier of the Wildstorm Industries' space fleets.

Wildstorm Industries Atlas-class Battle Carrier (Tier 15)

Again I like it.
If I had to add anything I generally like more info, so I would add a basic number of fighter's carried as well as shuttles or an option on carrying both, etc.
Why? well that way during the game or during prep I do not have to go back to the book to look stuff up.
MDC

Liberty's Edge

The Atlas-class can carry 16 tiny starships (8 per hangar bay). Though I imagine if you increase the size of the starship in the pay the number that can fit drops (16 tiny or 8 small).

Valkyn Highwind wrote:

Wildstorm Industries Avalon-class Dreadnought (Tier 20)

You have a "Drift 5" it should be "Drift 1."

Liberty's Edge

And that's what i get for copy/pasting a statblock to speed up layout. Thanks for catching that.

Edit: Fixed.

I have created a new Frame and need some feedback.

Vast Explorer
Size Huge Maneuverability average (+0 Piloting, turn 2)
HP 200 (increment 25); DT 5; CT 36
Mounts forward arc (1 capital), port arc (1 light), starboard arc (1 light), turret (1 heavy)
Expansion Bays 10 (must have at least 1 Shuttle bay)
Minimum Crew 6; Maximum Crew 25
Cost 100

Valkyn Highwind wrote:
Shivan (Tiny Fighter)

Does this have an option for a second crewman?

If not them the Trinode computer is overkill as you can only take one (role) action and Snapshot is the only minor action that requires a roll.

Rahod wrote:

This feels more like a Heavy Cruiser or Strike Transport than an explorer.

Based on the stats of Explorer vs Transport vs Lt Freighter I would change:
HP 140 (20) DT 5 CT 28
Mounts Forward (1 Hvy); Port (1 Hvy); Stbd (1 Hvy); Turret (2 Lt)
Cost 60

This places it between heavy and bulk freighters for HP and weapons mounts, retains the maneuverability and extra exp bays and the ability to mount capital weapons. If you were to reduce size to large I would lower cost to 50 to account for loss of capital weapons.

No, it does not. I'll fix/adjust this on the next round of updates to my materials file. Thanks for catching this.

Liberty's Edge

Dropped the Shivan's computer to a mononode, and used the 2 BP to give it FTL capability.
