Looking for advice making a crit fisherman.

Advice

As the title suggests, I'm looking to see how one would make a solid lv.8 crit fisher on a 20 point buy nowadays. I've read other threads on this, but couldn't find anothing relatively recent.

So, how would one fish for crits these days?

Keen rapier. And check out the Swashbuckler class -they absolutely feed off of crits.

Shadow Lodge

Samurai/barbarian[urban] I-TWF'ing Agile, Keen, Furious wakizashis. *Insane* DPR versus challenge-buddies.

(Critical Focus, of course, isn't available before BAB:9.)

Grand Lodge

I have a few crit fishing builds that can be adapted.

1) Swashbuckler, Unchained Barbarian, Investigator:

+1 Keen Furious Rapier, rage, study, gloves of marking, parry and repose, mutagen, accelerated drinker (reduce person), sickening strike, make this build.

How it works

You should be criting every round the first crit you forgo to debuff the enemy and buff your team, parry easily have amazing defenses etc. Not the most damaging build but one of the most accurate and hardest to hit. Almost any part of this build can be use on its own.

2) Eldritch Guardian, Mutation Warrior, Martial Master

Only the first archetype is need for this build to work.

Improved crit, outflank, menacing amulet of mighty fist, paired opportunist, and a fortuitous weapon are the components of this build.

How it works

Fighter takes it's turn with a keen fauchard. Crits. Familiar takes an AOO. The AOO causes the fighter to take an AOO. The fortuitous weapon provides a second AOO at -5. This AOO causes the familiar to take as attack of AOO.

The other archetypes help the flexibility of the class, letting them fly, deal with blindness, or swarms etc.

3) Slayer

Sword and board. Heavy shield and kukri. Improved Crit kukri, TWF, ITWF, shield master, improved shield bash, bashing finish, opportunist.

How it works

This works like the build above except with you crit with your kukri you get a free shield bash (bashing finish). TWF/ITWF, and opportunist, provide you extra opportunities for crits. Not only do you get your damage but you also get an extra attack with each crit.

That's 2 x 32,000gp in weapons, so at average WBL you won't be able to afford the full kit until 11th level. But you could pick up Improved Critical to the same effect and save 14,000gp for each wakizashi.

I like a Mutagen Fighter using a 18-20 critical weapon and Improved critical. Add in Potions of Bless weapon for Auto confirms.

That's not what those abilities say.The fortuitous weapon provides a second AoO for the fighter. It does not "cause the monster to provoke" a second time which is what is needed for Paired Opportunists to work. Fortuitous lets you hit an enemy twice with a single provocation--it does not cause the enemy to provoke twice.

Can you explain how you're benefiting both from Outflank and Paired Opportunists? I know they're both good, but they very rarely work together.

Grand Lodge

I will explain the process in more detail the abridged version is confusing I admit.

From outflank:

"In addition, whenever you score a critical hit against the flanked creature, it provokes an attack of opportunity from your ally"

From paired oppertuinist:

"Enemies that provoke attacks of opportunity from your ally also provoke attacks of opportunity from you so long as you threaten them (even if the situation or an ability would normally deny you the attack of opportunity)."

Here is the series of events.

Fighter Crits. This activates outflank.

Familair gets an aoo from outflank. This activates paired oppertunist.

The fighter take an aoo. In response to an aoo paired oppertunist (fortuitous aoo -5 is here as well)

The fighters aoo gives the familiar an aoo from the familiars paired oppertunist.

No event in this series cause more than 1 aoo.

The fight crit causes "familiar aoo 1"
The "familiar aoo 1" causes the "fighter aoo 1"
The "fighter aoo 1" causes "familiar aoo 2"

So no character is triggering most than one aoo from one event.

I made a dex based Eldritch Knight/Swashbuckler/Sorcerer

I was using the Verdant bloodline for RP reasons but I'm sure there are better choices.

Use Beast Shape to turn into a Coral Capuchin thats a +2 size bonus to AC, +8 Dex bonus, +3 natural armor and you can hold a rapier and cast still. Take slashing grace and arcane strike for damage. 15-20 crit range on your keen rapier but damage isn't really the value of the build.

The value is being a nearly un-touchable parrying flying magic monkey who casts on a crit and crits more full attacks that he doesn't. Prismatic spray, Sirroco and rift of ruin are some high level spells to throw around when you crit someone.

Also if there is an arcane in the party you can pose as a familiar. Which is cute.

its a very late game build though so .. yeah.

A lot of useful info. Thanks, everyone!
