Rovagug's Children?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Hey all. So was just doing some reading about Rovagug and saw that the Terrasque is one of his children among others.

And out of curiosity, have their been any adventures/adventure paths/modules/PFS modules that actually use them or have the pc's go up against them?

There's so many awesome gargantuan monsters in the bestiaries. I'd love to hear about any of them that you guys used and how the PC's handled them so share your stories. Cos I think I want to throw something massive and epic at my players. One of which is the Jabberwocky cos I love that monster.

Also as an aside I hope an Isonade in the Ruins of Azlant AP.

The only one I'm aware of:

Legacy of Fire:
The BBEG is awakening Xotani the Firebleeder, if you fail to stop you fight Xotani.

Liberty's Edge

Another similar one is in Paizo's 3.5 Module Clash of the Kingslayers.

Silver Crusade

I think children is a bit of a stretch. But they are called spawn.

Mummy's Mask can have a Spawn wake up during the After Campaign.

But no, the Spawn are generally too powerful to actually show up during the course of an AP. Most AP final bosses clock in at CR 20 or 21, and even a "weak" Spawn clocks in over that.

And due to their lack of intelligence, the Spawn make poor AP final boss candidates - they're natural disasters given flesh, not leaders & schemers.

I suppose kaiju and behemoths suffer the same issue.

Preventing some BBEG from releasing a Spawn/Kaiju/behemoth is much more likely as an AP finale (as apparently actually happens with Legacy of Fire, though I've never read it).

Any cool ideas on how to use the spawn? I think it would be cool to actually have a spawn awaken and just go across the country and cross the paths of the pcs and have the pc's deal with the saving of lives during and after.

I like the idea of having the PC's come across forces of nature like that.

Has anyone here used them in any of their games?

Well if your pcs are travelling overland instead of teleporting, that would make a good "random encounter".

One of our previous GMs had our party need to retrieve a mcguffin from the... mess... that was stuck to Big T from his current feeding session. That was the session we learned that Plant Growth is an amazingly effective way to slow down the big guy.

My current homebrew campaign has the premise that the PCs will be the heroes who fight the Tarrasque whenever (and wherever) it appears again during their generation. But they started at 1st level, and are currently 3rd, so that's a long way in the future, and I have decided to not smack them with the destiny hammer for now. However, several of my players decided to work it into their back stories on their own: one comes from the kingdom that was ravaged during its last appearance; one was raised in a half-orc tribe that worships the Tarrasque (a secret she has not shared yet); another is an inquisitor of an obscure cult opposed to the Tarrasque's (which has also not come out yet, because only one other PC has flat-out asked her--in private--where her divine magic comes from); and one PC has recurring and fragmented nightmares about being one of the beast's victims in the distant past.

Damn that sounds awesome! Great way to tie in the PC's together. Did you mention before hand that the Terrasque would feature priminently in the campaign?

Legacy of Fire is a good bet.

LoF:
You can take your players past the final module and go with an ultimate showdown with a spawn of Rovagug, Xotani. Within the AP, inf the players fail in their goals , they will fight Xotani but they stand no chance at levels 16-17 or so .

You can read some ideas from the Final Wish GM thread. You would definitely have to fill in the gaps with a lot of levels before any direct battle was feasible; it took an army of 1000 wizards to stop the creature the first time (though presumably not all high level ). I haven't really thought about how it would go with full mythic tiers on PCs and no enhancements to Xotani though.

Also something to keep in mind is that the lore seems to indicate that they cannot be truly killed. There is some condition that will restore them to their destructive life.

Additionally, the AP sidebars and articles have lot of additional information on Rovavgug , his spawn, heralds, etc. Iirc, there are something like 6 known spawn in legend, tarrasque and Xotani being two of them.

Seems like it might be fun post-Wrath of the Righteous. With the party being Level 20/Mythic 10, you might stand a chance, even.

Yes, I did, I even put it in the campaign's title: "Time of the Tarrasque." The Tarrasque has always been the central unifying element of that world since I first started tinkering with it way back in the early days of 3E. So some of the people I've been gaming with the longest have been interested in playing since before the idea had gotten much further than that basic premise.

If you want to hear more, I post summaries of each session to my blog. The most recent one is here, and has links to past installments. And the wiki where I've posted background and other info for my players is here.
