weapon hardness

Rules Questions

A sword with a hardness of 16 takes 7 points of acid damage. How do you reverse the damage or return the weapon back to prime condition?

Shadow Lodge

A 0-level spell called mending, or repairing with the Craft (weapons) skill. Hardness doesn't factor into it.

Thanks, I was not 100%sure about the mending spell, which I used already.

Sovereign Court

Question, has the sword has already taken damage and you are simply looking to repair it? Or are you doing the damage calculation now?
If the former, then mending will be sufficient, as long as it (is not magical and destroyed and) weighs less then 1 lb/caster level of the caster.

If the latter... The sword takes no damage. Acid does not bypass hardness (unlike DnD) and most objects take half damage from elemental damage types, which acid is. Regardless, the sword is made of steel, which is hardness 10, enough to reduce the damage to zero anyway.

Each +1 of enhancement bonus adds 2 to the hardness of armor, a weapon, or a shield, and +10 to the item's hit points.

A Steel Sword with a Hardness of 16 would be a +3 Sword (CL 9 minimum) and have over 40 Hit Points (30 from the +3).

Energy attacks deal half damage to most objects. Divide the damage by 2 before applying the object's hardness.

An attack of 7 Acid Damage would only do 4 points of damage, which does not overcome the weapons 16 Hardness. No damage to the Sword. (7 / 2 -16 = <0)

An attack of 46 Acid Damage would do 23 points of damage, dealing 7 points to the Sword. (46 / 2 -16 = 7).

Mending would have to be cast by at least a level 9 caster at least two times to repair the Sword.

3 points of damage, actually, because "unless otherwise noted, whenever you must round a number, always round down." Doesn't change your conclusion at all, just thought it best to point it out.

Since 7 acid damage (or any damage that doesn't ignore the weapon's hardness) wouldn't have got past the 16 hardness anyways, why not assume the 7 acid damage is AFTER the reduction from energy damage against objects and hardness reduction?
