Well. Barbarian, first of several children to artisan, noble parents? I mean, this kind of screams the dwarven equivalent of oppositional defiant disorder to me. Well, OK, maybe not that clinical, but at the very least, someone who just had a problem with always being told what to do and how to act, and felt her younger siblings had it easier than she did.

She loves her parents, but as she got older she just kept butting heads with them more and more. She found their rules to be too strict (they weren't) and they always seemed to treat her more harshly than her younger siblings (they didn't). Her problems controlling her temper just made things worse, but of course she was always being completely reasonable (she wasn't) so it was their fault (it wasn't) arguments sometimes got a little testy (she'd throw things and break stuff).

She ran away from home a couple of times, but she always came back and things would be fine for a couple of years...and then the cycle would start up again. One of those times, she met someone who didn't try to control her (ie, make her follow rules) and she learned to embrace her temper rather than fight it.

She may not have known they were a criminal/underworld type. Maybe her parents found out before she did? And that's when the real trouble began, and she left home for good.

She sounds like someone I'd not like to adventure with xD

I am sure she would seem to be unlikeable character in the party. believe it or not I had a group was in the same simpler. I don't think she a mean character just a character might be does not fit with others, but its her past.

Heh. :) Yeah, I would add that she's matured over the last couple of years. She's still quick to anger, but she recognizes that there are lines you can't cross without consequences. But if you push her, and keep pushing her...well...that might have consequences, too.

Yeah, I used as much of that as I could off the top of my head.

Ultimately the idea is to give you ideas. If anything about it works for you, then great! If not, maybe it will get you thinking about a different idea. Or maybe it's just not for you. That's fine, too. :)

I'm riffing in a different direction. There was a war & destruction in her past, leaving her family nobility but also artisans. (I'm wantonly dispensing with regent.) And she is heir to a legacy.

Hmmm, sounds like a bitter usurpation to me, whether national or local. In any case, her parents got dispossessed of their home & fortune, and forced to go to work as humble weaponsmiths. Since they are dwarves, of course, humble isn't exactly humble, and her parents designed a unique and powerful weapon, gifting their eldest daughter with a masterwork version as her only inheritance. (Until she can regain the noble status due her as her parents' eldest, that is.) She's motivated by genuine love for her family, even though she cannot be obedient, as they are, to the laws that the new but unjust ruler/noble is imposing. Her rebellion led to trouble for her family, so she has left home. She'll never forget that her parents trusted the person who dispossessed them! Evidently, this person is nasty and connected to the underworld in some way, and may have strings out even now to hunt her down. She has only two reasons to hope that she can find a way to right this terrible wrong -- her faith in Torag, and her new-found friends in the party.

While uncommon, it's not unthinkable for a ruling family to have their offspring learn a craft (the Habsburg monarchy would be an example), especially among dwarves.

I find the exceptional Intelligence more interesting. Why didn't she make more out of it? Did she lack the necessary discipline or were there other reasons? She seems to have an interest in uncommon languages (by the way, Elven is not a legal choice as a starting language for a dwarf).

If her significant relationship was with a con artist or marriage swindler, that could be the reason for her becoming disinherited and taking up an adventuring life.

Amanuensis, your point is well taken. But I at least would rather play someone with the background I outlined.

18 Int??? Are you multiclassing into magus??? I played a dwarf barbarian 1/magus 6 or 7, and he was really fun and versatile. Every fight was different because he could fight differently in each fight.

1. Rage and hack and slash
2. Spell buff for 1 round, then rage and hack and slash
3. Spell buff and use Spell Combat
4. Spell buff and use Spell Strike

I used a Dwarven War Axe so I could switch between two-handed Power Attacks of Rage in some fights, and swing it one-handed and use Spell Combat and/or Spell Strike.

I liked to use very short-ranged "blasts" like burning hands and color spray since I was in melee anyways.
