Can Shamans take the Split Hex feat?

Rules Questions

The feat, for reference.

I could've sworn I've read somewhere that most of the Hybrid classes counted as their parent classes for feat prerequisites and magic item interaction, but I couldn't find it anymore. I looked at the forums, and other people are wondering the same thing. I did find out that some classes specifically call out they're allowed to take Fighter feats (Brawler, Swashbuckler), so because the Shaman doesn't specify it, they shouldn't count. But I see no real reason why Shamans shouldn't be able to take this feat.

This is for PFS, by the way.

Nope. If that's the case, then Warpriests could take Fighter-Only feats whenever they wanted. Except, they can only take them with their Bonus Feats, and they use their Warpriest level as their Fighter level.

In this case, the requirement is levels in Witch. Shaman doesn't possess a clause similar to Warpriests, meaning they can't take that feat.

Scarab Sages

For PFS I would not count on it being allowed. I think by RAW i agree it is not allowed. For PFS if you get a different GM with a different interpretation you'll have to argue and probably lose and then I don't know what you do that session.

I'd probably allow it at my table, but that is a different matter.

Okay, fair enough. Seems weird that classes that share the exact same class feature can't take the same feats, but I'll live with it. Thanks!

Some hybrid classes have language about counting as one or both of their parent classes for feat prerequisites (for example, the Brawler and its Martial Training class feature).

The Shaman is not one of these classes.

At one point in development hybrids did count as their parents. But the final version dropped that, so that now there is virtually no difference between a hybrid and any other base class.

Perhaps. But considering the shaman is notorious for pilfering class features from pretty much every full caster in the game, it seems reasonable that at least some things are off limits.

Meh, Shamans get to Chant twice a round while Witches can't do the same with Cackle, so I think that's fair. Also, since Shaman has a greater selection of hexes, it's per definition not the "exact same class feature".

I would note that the Shaman has a different selection of Hexes rather than greater.

They have lots of Spirit Hexes which they can theorectically get access to, but they don't get the higher level Hexes that the Witches get.
